If you watch the entire video, JP is trying to communicate the importance of having some type of dependable social construct whether that be a spouse, partners, family, friends etc. He didn’t say everyone needs to be married to have a decent life.

Hey, we are never alone ❤ We have God. And we have Angels. I have just waken up and in my dreams I met Luna(my golden doodle) and we were at home and she was fluffy and laughing as always. This Dr is a nice guy. However what he says is not suitable to everyone. In my case it is much better to stay single without kids. Every single life is different and we live sometimes so many different lifes during our lifetime. I hope I find you well. I send you a big hug.

Peterson’s not wrong, but there has to be a society that isn’t brainwashed to undermine each other. Women have all been brainwashed to hate men, so relations in any capacity are out of the question until long after the brainwashing stops. Buckle up, it’s going to be brutal for the next 1,000 years…

I grew up in a broken family. My life used to be dysfunctional because I grew up in one. Never believed in marriage because I used to think, I’ll just end up getting separated, why bother? Until I met my husband. He gave me the stability that I didn’t have from my parents, siblings and friends. My husbands family mostly are fairly decent people. When I see them there are a lot of things I wished I have done differently. I wish I studied harder when I was younger, I could have been more. It hits differently when you’re surrounded by people who are goal oriented, it motivates you to be better. It is true you are the people you’re around with. I was surrounded with a lot a of mediocre people before my husband including myself 😅

Will never go back to the abusive family, will never get married due to high risk low reward and getting my life ruined, have some friends that are actually good friends. Havent been this 'happy'( = not severely fearful and depressed 24/7) since I was 4, am 28 now. Dont assume that other people will bring you happiness, especially family which you can't choose but are stuck with for years. Most try to abuse and extort as much as they can from you. @@janemathaba7706 Just from looking at studies which reveal certain character traits in individuals, I'd estimate that at least 30% of men and 30% of women are simply bad people who would make for horrible marriage partners: the kind of people who lie, cheat, and steal all the time without remorse, lacking a conscience, engaged in immoral activity all the time, taking advantage of others, using emotional manipulation, being selfish and greedy, etc. This means that when someone is looking for a marriage partner, they can cross off at least 30% of the population as individuals to stay away from. Because of this, many, many people will be forced to remain single because there are not enough decent people in the world who make for good marriage partners.

This was supposed to be about "why bother getting married", but it was really about relationships and responsibilities, and no one needs to "get married or the equivalent" to have those. I had a longtime companion for 12 years, it was okay, then he started turning into a "pack rat" so i asked him to leave, which he did, preserving my sanity. That was over 12 years ago. I've always had cats, who are excellent company, i'm not at all lonely, i live happily, mostly without human company, although I can have it if i choose it.

I understand the need for human interaction. My husband divorced me 23 years ago. I had 1 semiwonderful relationship until he told me I needed to leave because a more intelligent stimulating woman was moving in. This woman was 10-15 years his senior and was very ill. They lasted until he died. I believe he was looking for a woman who represented his mom. It sounds sick to me if this relationship was sexual; which it was part time. Plus he liked both men and women. This he told him after he broke up with me. :(

I think people need a companion to keep each other grounded, knock the edges off one another and perceive external perspectives. People who are single their whole lives don’t have anyone to keep them in check and rely on themselves to identify where social boundaries lie and that’s never a good idea. That’s why people who live alone for an extended period of time tend to get a bit odd/quirky/eccentric.

I'm in my sixties, never married. I watched all of my friends make bad decisions back in the day, and now they're all divorced. I'm happy,. I have limited contact with my family because they didn't treat me well as a child--and contrary to popular belief--these people don't change. I had a feeling that some of the narcissism I experienced was hereditary, so I opted out of parenthood. I've never regretted that decision. I have lots of friends and lots of time to myself, which I enjoy. My step-mother idolized her children and with one exception they all deserted her when she was dying of cancer. Getting married isn't a guarantee against loneliness, treating others well is.

I'm in love with loneliness. I have no family, and my adopting parents are going to die soon.. I have few to no friends. The most important project I ever began Is loving myself. I am nowhere close to who I want to be. And I may never get there. But I love my company. My job gives me the power to teach people basic life skills and work skills. And to people who really need it. I don't feel like I need anyone. I enjoy people's company and I do enjoy the idea of being married and having friends but like most my other ideas they get boring very fast. I would rather just adopt a couple kids once I hit my first million. Adopt people like me and do the best I can for them. I don't care for any other type of long term relationship. I disagree with jps outlook here because it's narrow to his own experience. You discredit people like me. People who suffer the most by trying to obtain what he's listed. Once I finally let go of the "normal life" I finally experienced some degree of happiness for the first time. JP is intelligent within the scope of his own life experience and such experience is the commonality to be sure. But great people rarely grow from within commonality. And for those who grow outside such, heeding his advice and outlook can potentially cripple your personal development.

I agree … there are many unmarried people who have done amazing things in this world. A great deal of un happiness can come from pursuing the status quo- many of us are married and many are not.. As a single, 59 yr old woman, I disagree with him in the area of needing to have a partner. My life is full, I’m not lonely, my life is not chaotic and I’m sane, or at least the voices in my head tell me I am! 😂

Because women need the respect that they are valued and cared for. Even though I was a Christian, I missed this twice. The second time, I married a Christian man. God has to be the center of your marriage. It is never perfect because we are human. But it is certain if God is in the center!!!❤

Many people are sane, happy, stable, successful and prosperous without marriage, numerous partners, self centeredness, hedonism, etc. Self sufficiency is not that hard, but does require a high degree of personal development, self reliance, disclipline, confidence, responsibility, and life skills, etc. It does not necessarily include loneliness, instability, short-term relationships, chaos, etc. It certainly requires being self-actualized enough to be capable, bright-spirited, and "content" with your own life and it's outcomes... along the roads less travelled.

I was raised in the 80s when being single & a man without kids was the norm. I'm 42 now & yes.... Quite insane. Everyday the "monster" he speaks about is inside me wanting to burn society down like the Joker but I control it 1 more day hopefully waiting for a better outcome I know will never come, because the 80s also taught us after TMNT, or He-Man & every other show that doing good gets you far. What a load of crap. Gen X was lied to the most. We helped build Millennials & Gen Z Zoomer humor while also realizing too late how stupid it was. We created a monster too. The last decent person was born sometime in the early 1900s on a farm somewhere.

Sometimes the network of people you belong to are very broken. To put your faith in humans for your happiness can be a big mistake, and you could find yourself very lonely. It's an advantage to break bad cycles in relationships, have a productive work day you are satisfied with, and I have a best friend who never lets me down. He wrote a book that answers a lot of questions and gives me peace. I would mention His name, but unfortunately He's not trending right now.

Dr Peterson, I love you to the moon and back, I just wonder sometimes if you live on the same earth as us, what you’re saying is what SUPPOSED to be but NOT what is. But alone at times than the damage that can be caused by your life long partner, I speak from experience.

I disagree with most of what he’s saying here. I maintain stability, my life isn’t chaotic , and although I am pretty close to family and a handful of friends… I do not feel any need for a romantic partner “to be happy”. Come on , JP, you’re better than this

I'm laughing really hard right now because family and relationships are the very thing I had to run away from so as to be SANE and have equilibrium themselves! And I'm happier than before that course of action. However I'm not saying not having a life partner, a spouse is better than being alone. There's always a path that's less painful than the other.
