In this video we analyse Debswana a partnership between the Government of the Republic of Botswana and De Beers Group, formed in 1969. The company’s structure is a 50/50 joint venture through long-term investment. It operates four diamond mines in Botswana - Jwaneng, Orapa, Damtshaa and Lephenye - making it the world’s leading diamond producer by value and volume. Debswana is the leading private employer in Botswana with approximately 5000 employees and 6000 contractors, directed from their corporate center in Gaborone.

You’re right and that’s why the government have heavenly invested the revenue generated from diamonds on education to generate a skilled workforce in the future , healthcare, and business friendly laws for ease of doing business in the country , and not to forget about infrastructure , they are also focusing on exporting renewable energy in the future because they just found ideal areas within country that can easily generate electricity via solar and wind 👍

The Botswana gov learned from the rest of Africa - they did not see themselves as the indistructable be all of wisdom + experience. They looked at their assets with a strategic mind, to gain from whats happening on the rest of the continent, in a disciplined, calm + collected way - without much ado. Well done to them.

I hope that our governments are securing some of these precious stones in storage for the land. Some things are worth coping from others. Failure to store some of these precious metal one day other lands will have more tons e.g in store than us. Building the country's land and people is equally important. Africa should be in full leadership in all forms of mining and supportive infrastructure after all these years. Wake up Africa. Agriculture is vital but the it cannot be totally depended on. Permanent long term measures must be taken in addition. It's even more important when agriculture lacks the full development of a viable commercial industry to promote or sustain any population.

thats not the whole story, theres taxes and Botswana owns 15 percent of Debeers. so the actual value after it all is bigger than the simple 25 percent, now going to 50 percent. and dont forget, governments arent good business people, its better for operations and business to be handled by corporations. and the other thing was that this was a totally poor country with no resources to even mine. it was a fair deal at the time, and the current is a fair deal too.

Correct. And additionally, taxes were paid too, so the entire govt share could be up to 85% of the revenues. De Beers sold a larger share of the mined diamonds, while the govt sold a smaller share. From the share sold by De Beers, Bost got 15% of the profits, plus its share in Debswana. Complicated shareholding structure.
