The Astute-class submarines are the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy, combining world-leading sensors, design and weaponry in a versatile vessel.
In the first part of 2012, they proved their ability to prepare and launch Tomahawk missiles, successfully firing 2 missiles from the Gulf of Mexico and accurately hitting the targets on the test range in Northern Florida.

This is one beautiful boat. I like how large it is which means fewer cramped spaces. Being on such an advanced submarine is probable the safest vessel on earth. Submariners are famous for saying, "There are two types of ships, Submarines and targets." US Navy 1983-90

Fewer cramped spaces is a fallacy, they are far more cramped then their predecessors due to the sheer amount of equipment that is installed in them combined with a totally new way of designing the interiors over the older boats.

This is actually one of my issue with the British and Australian sub programs, as well as many other nations that build them, is that they aren’t willing to build enough to need the full local manufacturing, but the still want to build them locally anyways. While this is fine, don’t blame the cost on the military of the defense department, but on those that decided to utilize that portion of the military budget as a jobs program. I mean does it really make sense for Australia to gear up for submarine production, to only build 6, or for Britain to do so completely separately for 8 boats?

@Sypha Flowen The UK would still need a navy to protect its shipping and interests. You do realise as part of NATO and the G7 (which china and Russia aren't) you need a military right? this is the reason why we just built a new aircraft carrier recently. The US can't protect the UK all the time so yes we need boats/ships. The best special forces and the best nuclear subs yes we are biting the ankles ha! This only strengthens the US and UK relationship you do understand global politics right? every country has to do their bit to help and the US will pressure big country's with economy's to keep their military advanced in case of war and for soft power in times of peace. keep hating you have no military experience, prat.

@@markcooke5270 Absolutely not, ambient noise, surface clutter, scattering effects and reflectivity is far too high. This 5000km nonsense is talking about the SOFAR channel and other bathythermographic phenomena which reduce attenuation and bottom bounce. The channels allow the sound waves to reflect between two layers in the water column allowing extreme horizontal projection, normally sound waves will bounce off the bottom, reflect to the surface and be lost to surface clutter. You can extend the passive detection range by some clever convergence zone trickery but its certainly nothing like 5000km.

I don't think it has been announced yet, but it makes sense to me that that Astute class boats will be built by Australia, as the US is flat out building Viginia class boats for itself and the UK will be nearing the end of its Astute class built in the next few years, so the UK would be able to provide the most support for the Australian boat build. Add to this that the Astute class boats are smaller, cheaper and require less crew than a Viginia class boat, and I think the UK boat is a better fit for Australia. Having said that, I could see Australia leasing a few US Low Angeles class boats for a decade until its new boats are built. I'd go for Astute class boats fitted with US weapons systems.

Britian has came a long way since Admiral Rickover gave Lord Mountbatten a working Nuclear Reactor for Submarines However, in 1956, Rickover visited Britain and saw first hand that the British nuclear submarine program would not bear fruit for many years. He withdrew his objections, saying "England has been a real friend and ally of America for generations. We should help them." When in light of this it appeared that the proud British might be reluctant to accept American reactor plants in their warships, Rickover insisted on a meeting alone with Mountbatten, in which he asked Mountbatten, "Do you want a working reactor plant now, or would you rather preserve British pride?" Mountbatten emerged from the meeting and told surprised British officials that they were excepting Rickover's offer of American help. Officially, the aid was provided in accordance with the 1958 US/ UK Mutual Defense Agreement.

Some commentators described Astute class as having a lamborghini engine attached to a morris minor gearbox. Happy to corrected but Ive read that a few times. Maybe its just bullshit designed to hide its real performance. (happy to be corrected.) Its probably a magnificent weapon of war whichever way.
