@@Richard-tq7xi First, I am totally against sending anything to Ukraine the clown regime. But, the US doesn't send it's best equipment anywhere unless under US command and control. Second, HIMARS is a very effective system but the Ukrainians can only be taught - too quickly -- on how to deploy and use them. Most likely different tactics and not as designed. That can be said for a lot of weapon systems except maybe the Javelins. They are like MANPADS and much more idiot proof. Though the US is conducting battlefield surveillance for Ukraine, that's mere advice and they don't always follow it.

Missing a lot of submarine operating nations, aren't we? You mentioned Venezuela, which has two submarines that may not have gone to sea for years now, and you mentioned North Korea, whose submarines can only very charitably be described as rusted hulks (for the most part). Why on Earth didn't you mention nations such as India, Norway, South Korea, Israel, Turkey, Netherlands, Sweden, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and others? Especially when these nations have larger and far more combat capable submarine fleets? Heck, India even has two SSBNs, for heaven's sake!

The weight of a submarine can be controlled by the amount of iron at the bottom of the hull. This has to counteract the massive buoyancy of the very large airspaces within.
@oldsilverdrew2471
@oldsilverdrew2471 5 ай бұрын
The buoyancy of a submarine is controlled by ballast tanks that are filled with water to submerge the boat or blown with compressed air to force the water out to make it more buoyant. The pressure hull is where the submariners and all the equipment are. The external hull is what you see when looking at a sub. Between the two hulls is where the ballast tanks are located.

The UK calls their submarine fleet the "SILENT SERVICE". I think that name can be used by both their submarine fleet as well as their surface fleet. In 1914 the Royal Navy was the uncontested naval superpower in the world. The could boast of having 82 battleships, 136 cruisers and 142 destroyers. Today the surface fleet is down to 21 ships. About the only thing positive going for the surface fleet is the commissioning of their two aircraft carriers (which I admit is a pretty damn big positive). ☹

To answer your last question, I suspect china, russian and north korean numbers to be inflated, especially regarding actual mission capable platforms versus to propaganda inflated numbers of total platforms that may be in operational state. Regarding the US numbers, due to the rather open information space within the US, I think it is unlikely that there is any divergence between the actual numbers and stated total numbers of platforms in service. However, what may NOT be known is the actual TOTAL capabilities of each platform types aside what has already been disclosed (which may or may not be current info). I suspect they are likely to have capabilities that are beyond what has been disclosed, but whether they are effective or not is for the "Silent Service" to know and for us to wonder.

Israel has at least 6 German built (based on Israeli design/specs) units, presumably some of those carry nuclear head missiles.

I recently heard the US was not replacing it's older sub and that the fleet size will decrease but only because of the technology that makes one sub as good as three to five of the older models.

Russian subs with titanium hulled are more advanced also many subs from. Soviet times are sitting in dry dock waiting for refurbishing

Refurbishment is unlikely for the excellent reason that they will have to be completely rebuilt which probably isn’t affordable from the high casualties in Ukraine,sanctions and other huge losses from this dreadful war.

The Royal Australian Navy (or RAN) names its Collins class submarines after famous past sailors. HMAS Collins was named after Admiral John Augustine Collins, HMAS Waller was named after Commander Hector Waller and so on. Not all honoured sailors named by boats were officers though. HMAS Sheean was named after Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean, VC. 💙

It really isn't about quantity but quality, the UK Astute class submarine with the American Virginia class subs are the best in the world in stealth and immence capabilities. Recently the British exposed Chinese subs that are former USSR subs and new ones built derived their tech from same subs. The subs were trying to shadow a Royal Navy carrier group and wss detected easily and could have been destroyed if there were hostilities. The Chinese just have numbers and lack any superior quality in land, sea and air military equipment simple fact. Most of the countries on this list are also in Nato and Australia is also an ally of US and UK so really we have most of the countries with subs on this list being allies which includes Japan.

Norway has at least 6 Ula-class submarines and Sweden has at least 3 Gotland-class submarines. The Gotlands are reportedly some of the stealthiest in the world managing a simulated torpedo strike on a US aircraft carrier in a NATO training exercise. India has a whole bunch of subs of different classes. There is a lot more, but these three would have made nice additions to the list. Also the description says "looking at the unique submarines of countries like Poland and Cuba". Must have missed those😉
