Let alone that a "British accent" doesn't exist for the same reason an American one doesn't. Many areas sound and speak differently. Just because not everyone is that bad, or you're not aware of your own degree of regional accent doesn't make the portrayal unrealistic or uncommon. The most unrealistic thing about True Detective (S1) was the standard American accent on the Billy Graham/Kenneth Copeland analog they had. Great actor, but all those big tent televangelists have a charicaturish regional accent.
