You could do a video about how to recognize the genre when listening to any given song...
@Jolgeable
@Jolgeable 7 жыл бұрын
One thing I know is that there's not a formula for recognize a genre for all kind of music. Here in Brazil some popular music critics do this mistake, they analyze samba using parameters usually used for some american music and it does'n fit well many times. X) (sorry for my bad english)
@Mad.E
@Mad.E 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, yeah I know exactly what you mean. What I was asking for would be an oversimplyfied 'formula'. Just something to help you talk about music, give you some vocabulary. So that you could say things like 'This song seems to have some country elements in it eventhough it's a typical soul song.' or that you could vaguely define your own taste in music.

I would say that another reason that this song makes us want to dance is the "call and return" interplay between the the vocal melody and the bass synth riff in the chorus. Something that blues and early rock were all about- vocal melody is played, then guitar or horns return with a slightly altered variation( a return). This makes the music feel more like a conversation, or a party. Its predictable, because you're waiting for the bass to have its 'say', but the melodies differ so it makes it fun, makes you want to jump in.

Some of the samples referenced and misgiven to Clyde Stubblefield (who is amazing), were actually from Gregory C. Coleman's drum work for the amen break. Just wanted to throw this out here to give credit where it's due.

@moselaw2
@moselaw2 7 жыл бұрын
Asummersdaydreamer14 He's just saying that the drum beat wasn't created by Clyde Stubblefield, it was created by Gregory Coleman, however that specific drum solo might be more popular for samples seeing as its higher quality than the actual Amen Break
@henryhill92
@henryhill92 7 жыл бұрын
Those sample examples were actually from the studio version of Funky Drummer (that most famously appears on the 'In The Jungle Groove' compilation), not the live performance in the video or the Amen break. Not sure where you guys and the Nerdwriter are getting these misconceptions from, its clearly audible and available on WhoSampled.com. The Powerpuff Girls theme is commonly wrongly attributed to Amen Brother, but its definitely Funk Drummer sped up.

I appreciate the type of pop music Bruno Mars is tryna bring back. Something funky that you can *actually* dance and groove to and not do a single stupid dance move like the recent one's from our generation like the "Whip" "Nae-Nae" or "Hit Dem Folks."
@davidb5205
@davidb5205 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, because older generations NEVER had stupid dances like "The Sprinkler", "The Twist", "The Chicken", "The Mashed Potato", "The YMCA", "The Robot", or "The Running Man"
@ProlificPops

David Boucard Which are all super popular dances moves still known till this day even by this generation. The Whip and Nae-Nae will never be as legendary as those moves. And some of those dances moves actually took rhythm and dance skills to pull off by the way. Literally anyone can pull off the Whip, Nae-Nae, and the Hit Dem Folks because of how dumbed down dancing has become.

wow you are a fucking idiot my dude - 24k (95%) of it was written by Philip Lawrence and Christopher "Brody" Brown. again HE as HIMSELF is not doing anything with music HE DOESN'T WRITE THE MUSIC so the correct statement here would be I AM HAPPY WHAT HIS PRODUCERS are doing with music and bringing the style back. He is just a likable image and a medium to bring the music out of the studio. Stop being a brain dead sheep and calling out people on lack of facts because of your own stupidity.

And "Calling All My Lovelies" is an extremely underrated song.

Small, nitpicky thing. NWA's Fuck Tha Police is NOT sampled from Cold Sweat, but from Funky Drummer and that Powerpuff Girls frantic drum and bass loop is from The Winstons - Amen Brother also known as the " Amen Break " Amen Break is definitely the top contender for most tracks sampled. Thousands upon Thousands of Drum and Bass tracks

Funnily I think where the "funky rhythm" has really evolved and is still evolving is neurofunk, which of course is somewhat bound to the Amen break with a lot of ties to Drum and Bass.

Amen and Funky Drummer beats might be duking it out as most sampled for the rest of eternity. Underground and pirate style recordings make actually counting these uses almost impossible. Also, these, and any other breaks, can be manipulated to the point where they are for the most part unrecognizable, but definitely still "sampled".

I enjoy it like music. But what I love the most about it is: once the video finish, take a look bellow of the tittle to see that there's at least 1 million of minds as nerds as mine. My friends and people around me doesn't understand how hard it is to be this way, being courios about topics that nobody cares, no one to really talk in months some times. 0.15% of the world's population seems pretty lonely, but at least not lonely at all. Thanks.

Roobster100 What did he specifically rip off??? I know he has a lot of influences from old funk and R&B, but that doesn't make his music bad, nor does it warrant the kind of hate that some of the people in this comment section are producing.

I grew up with all of this! And Bruno Mars pays tribute/acknowledges the inspiration behind his music. Mostly in interviews. He doesn't scream it from the rooftops but he never misses a beat to give credit when credit is due

A great insight of how history repeats itself. I love the idea that we are going to get more and more 90's inspired art to come soon after all this stuff that appears to be in part inspired by the 80s. Congrats on the golden play button Evan! Keep bringing us the 24k Gold!

No. Don't. It's saturated with enough "thinkers" and would get instantly blended into the mix of white noise. Here, it's expanding a medium in a good way. If anything, stay the course, and do an occasional video that your core audience wouldn't like as much, but the larger one would.

YangSunWoo lmao no matter what him or anyone is listening to it almost definitely has a influence that links back to people of African descent. Jazz, rock, EDM, really so many modern music come with roots tied to African Americans or people of African descent like Jamaicans it's actually pretty insane

That's my genre, besides neo soul and rnb, but I just think you did such a great job of doing your homework in making this video and educating others who maybe didn't know the history of what is now sampled heavily now a days. I grew up listening to all the artists you mentioned in this video so I love that you explained it perfectly.

WHich is from late '70s, early '80s funk, which had to share the same space as disco. P Funk, The Gap Band, Prince, all of their drumbeats are usually relatively simple but powerful and loud, while the instruments on top carry the syncopation.
