A great guy but this wasn't true about him and Clint. Clint was let go from Universal in the 1950's and never met Burt Reynolds until the late 1960's. When Clint was let go from Universal Burt was in College playing football in Florida and had never acted in anything.

I've seen interviews with him when the end was approaching. What I find heartbreaking is that the girl who Burt describes as the love of his life, Sally Field, left his side. You could tell that was one of Burt's big regrets in his life.

No offense to Burt but it's not true. Clint is older and he wasn't fired on the same day or even the same year. Universal terminated his contract on October 23, 1955. Burt Reynolds was still attending college in Florida. They never worked for Universal at the same time back in the 1950s. Clint was let go because they did this all the time. It wasn't because of his Adam's apple.

I had heard this story in the '80s or '90s also, but my dad told it to me and he's said a lot of unreliable things over the years, and the version he told me was that Burt was told he couldn't act, and Clint's Adam's Apple was too big. Surprising how much of that appeared in Burt's story here, aside from the main reason for Clint's dismissal being differently-stated. Maybe the Adam's Apple thing was just a Burt joke.

Both him and Clint had great charisma and, like John Wayne, always played a version of themselves. But with a good script a good director new just how to channel that and make it entertaining. Clint probably made more good films than Burt but Burt had his own kind of energy and humour. Its a shame they only ever made one (not very good) film together as I could imagine them both being in every which way but loose as the brothers or in Space Cowboys. Incidentally Burt was supposed to be in Once upon a time in Hollywood but died before his scenes could be shot so Bruce Dern had to fill in for him.
