Very often situations arise when one of the 2 strings of one piano key makes a buzzing noise. Why is this happening here? Is it possible to fix this?
Unfortunately, when a copper bass string winding is lost, there is no way to fix it there. We need to remove this string from the upright piano. Replacing it on the identical string there. If the cross-section of the copper wire (diameter) is larger than on the broken string one, or the number of the coils is different than on the broken one, then its sound may differ there.
OR Try it way fix:
Piano Techs Fix: Before replacement of the buzzing bass wire a repair can be attempted as follows: With a tuning hammer loosen the offending wires tuning pin until the coil around the pin expands slightly. (don't break the coil) This takes the pitch of the wire way down and loosens it down to the hitch pin. With needle nose pliers remove the wires looped end from the hitch pin down below, and in turn the bridge pins, touch only the loop with the pliers. Insert a small screwdriver blade or an awl through the loop. Twist the wire twice or three times around in the same direction as the coper winding is wrapped around the steel core. Grab the loop with the needle nosers, remove the screw driver while holding the loop tightly and slip the loop back on to the hitch pin. Work the wire back onto the bridge pins in the same original position. Bring the string back up to pitch with the tuning hammer and tune the unison. This method can eliminate the buzzing as it tightens the copper coil around the steel core of the wire. If it does not eliminate the buzz replace the wire with a new duplicate made by a wire company. (Mapes or Arledge).

Hi Max. My family has an old soviet (I think) upright piano, and I'm dying to know more details about it. It's name is РОСМОВ.ДОН (I can send you a photo of it if you like a more detailed look). I would really like to know as much information about this piano as possible, like it's quality at the time it was made, and it's quality today. Would you advise to have it tuned? And how much would you advise to pay for tuning/repairs? And how much would you value it today? You are my only hope for this information. Thank you in advance sir.

I, Homer J. S Thanks for your information. There is one letter with an error here, instead of ROS(M)OV.DON it should be (T), I think. This music factory instruments was founded after the Second World War in the city of Rostov-on-Don. All work on the manufacture of these upright piano was done by German prisoners here. The quality was not bad until the 70s, but it cannot be fully compared with European ones. If your piano is a family heirloom, etc., then it may make sense to restore it. I don't know your goals and where you live. I don't think this needs to be done if you want to use this as a professional piano there. In order not to be unfounded, and so that I can explain something more specifically yours upright piano about, then you shoot a small clip ( the review). It is advisable to press the keys and hear the sounds there too. When you maked the clip and send me the link regards, Max kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGeanI2JZ79_hLMsi=aX-I4UbT3ulsJL2B

@@TheMaximillyan Thank you so much for the quick reply. Concerning the name of the piano, it's written exactly like РОСМОВ.ДОН, I don't know if I'm reading it wrong (since I don't know Russian). You can see in the link below a short video showing the name, pedals, and sound quality of our piano. Sorry if it's a low quality video, my brother did his best to make a quick video of it since I'm not there. If you can take a look at it, it would be much appreciated. I don't want to sell it, I'm just interested in how you would rate it's quality. And also I would just like to practice on it occasionally. And one last question, isn't an accoustic piano (even as old as this one) be better than any new digital piano? (If the old one is tuned and maintained ofcourse). And again thank you so much brother. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnfTfYOsapZjiqssi=uJCB9Y-bQH0LfPz8

The Russian letter "t" is written italic like the English "m". Therefore, after all, “Rostov-Don”. The video is really very uninformative. I can only say that was made approximately the end of the 70s. Sometimes these were low-grade upright pianos with very mediocre sound and not very high quality workmanship. It's possible to set this up and have a little practice here. This piano cost just over 700 Soviet rubles (750) dollar. A digital piano is definitely a different instrument, so to speak. They use different principles the sound creating , etc. If the piano tuner undertakes to do an inspection it and guarantees that he can tune it, then why not try to do it? The main thing to ask the tuner is: is it necessary to replacing original PINS there? If you can save and tuning it without significant investments, paying for the tuning and minor repairs only, then you can and should do it. By the way, the action ( hammers, dampers and ect.) in these pianos were made at the Leningrad piano factory "Red October" - this is a big plus there. regards, Max

@@TheMaximillyan thank you so much for the information Max, and again sorry for the bad quality of the video haha. I'll try to make another more detailed and precise video when I go back home, maybe even show you the insides of it if I could. But again, I can't thank you enough for your time and patience, and the information you shared with me. Thanks brother.

Thank you, I am very pleased that my modest knowledge about the subject of the sovetic piano was useful to you. I hope that you will be able to shoot new video (preferably inside the piano) too. Perhaps yours upright piano is still possible to reanimation for future succsefully use. By the way, if possible, try to play something on your piano as well. regards, Max
