Let's be honest though, most coastal cities in California are still much more expensive than even the most expensive cities in Texas. Cost of living in cities like San Francisco is outrageous. Unless you're willing to live far away from the coast, it's not comparable price wise.

Good points. I live in Chicago and Austin over 10 years each. I have been wanting to move to CA, but never able to afford a brand new home around 2500-4000 Sqft. I just got back from 2 months trip in China. Met many friends who have purchased their retirement homes there. Transportation is so cheap, on time, and easy access to everywhere. My 2 months of actively travel to visit interesting places there cost me less than my air plane ticket. Texas property tax too high and CA cost of living is way out of easy retirement budget, but some place outside of the USA for my retirement might be a better idea.

This is going to be unpopular with Texans, but this is someone who's lived in CA an TX and travel through extensively in both. 1) Lack of dramatic scenery/vistas. In most of CA and the West, on a daily basis you'll have a spectacular views. TX best hope is a dramatic sunset or thunder storm. 2a) Horrible weather/Can't have your windows open year round. Almost everything new is 100% climate controlled. 2b) Humidity. Just..no! 3) It's flat and claustrophobic if not use to it. 3) There's no great weekend getaways in the mountains, at beach, in Tahoe/Las Vegas. Trips to the "Hill Country" is best bet (but not hills in a Western sense). 4) Far fewer "best and brightest". In SF, SJ, LA, you're going to meet people who are the world's best at something, doing amazing things. Austin is the best place in TX, but doesn't compare. 5) Toll roads. 6) Mosquitos.

@@thatwilliamzhang No, they are not. El Paso has mountains. Amarillo has a stunning canyon nearby. The Texas coast has beaches. East Texas has forests. People who live in those areas have these scenes. The complaints above apply to AUSTIN.

Life-long Texan here. Can’t stand the Cali attitude and way of life. That said, CA is one of the greatest places in the world scenery-wise and weather-wise. TX falls way short in that comparison, as do most other states. Having said that, yes, Texas sucks - please tell all your friends not to move here. Everyone will be happier.

I moved to Austin 4 years ago after living in nor cal for 7 years, Portland for 6 years and 20 years in socal. I really like California, but the main reason we moved to Austin was for cost alone. Me and my wife income is $175k with 3 children. We like new master planned homes in the 2500-3000sqft range with good schools. In California we could never live on the coast or near a large city. We had to live in east bay when living in nor cal and south riverside county when living in socal to get what we wanted. We lived 55 miles from San Diego, 35 miles from the beach, 45 miles from Orange County and 90 miles from la. The biggest advantage of moving to Austin was we could get our living life style about 30% cheaper and we are now only 16 miles from downtown Austin. We now have access to all the perks of living near a metro and it’s all within 20 mins. Yes, California is better. But for our lifestyle we are 100% better off in Austin. We don’t feel we are missing anything living in Austin. For the first couple years we kept comparing each state, but then we eventually decided Texas is our home.

Problem is those red state. They aren't into helping the poor. We can be wealthy but once health issue happens and need to get help like welfare. Welfare doesn't exist in Texas. For example I got injured. I have two disc pushing my spinal cord and pinching nerves causing permenent damage. I'm on state disability. Will run out of money by August. I am not allowed to work. So I need to get SSDI soon. I am right now getting assistance for food. Basically it's ebt. Medical health insurance. So forth. Texas wont be able to help me I wouldn't be able to live there. You can have family in Texas do good but if you have a new born with disability good luck. You have to put in so much money into ur child and probably end up debt if you have a low end job. What if it's a good job but you have to pay for a baby siter? I'm good in California. I'm in a fucked up big city called Fresno but hey I'm living my life paying my bills. What frustrate me is the damn fucking Fuel. I fuel up my tank every week $75 to fill up my tank.
