"You cant make up math and call it wellness". This is why Dave is awesome. Even if there are legitimate mental health issues, you cant use those as an excuse for everything that isnt "what I want". this whole call she is putting a mental health roadblock in front of everything that isnt "my preference". I think with the recent cultural shift in awareness for mental health, (which is a good thing), its given birth to a trend of use "wellness" as the excuse for doing whatever you want and avoiding unpleasant things.

It's troubling when people use mental health as an excuse, because it minimises those with serious problems. Furthermore, it encourages a state of learned helplessness over things that you can and should change. Wellness is not permanent, and some people have no choice but to get on with life, even when they are suffering. I can testify to that after a traumatic year. I have kept on writing, taken steps to get out of debt, and rebuilt my business, all while having serious bouts of depression. People getting realllll soft these days. One of the most notable things that you can do to improve your mental well-being is getting rid of stressors in your life that cause anxiety. I.E. paying off debt to get out of financial stressors - because money is the root of the majority of stress that people have in their lives. Additionally, this girl is either too scared or too arrogate to look at herself in the mirror and make adult decisions. Mascaraing your "wellness" and "mental health" as priority number one while you literally sit on the keys to your own decreased anxiety is the epitome of self-centered and irresponsible. I don't think she'd bother. She has more money in a brokerage account than she has in student loans, but she refuses to pay it off. She sounds like the Starbucks coffee, Apple products, and Nikes type. This is your typical student loan generation and the reason why I'm not for student loan debt cancellation. These kids need to learn how to prioritize.

I totally agree with the debt free part. Use the investments to clear up the debt and start fresh. Speaking from one that did use some investments to become debt free, other than the mortgage, it makes other expenses mush easier.

Agreed. I did something similar-not with investments, but I took a look at what assets I had that I could leverage, namely my intellectual properties, and I sold the audiobook rights to some novels I wrote to an audiobook publisher. They gave me a really nice advance, so I used to to pay down a ton of debt, and in the space of three months, I paid off almost all my debt, save for student loans, which I’m hammering down on now. It makes handling all my other bills SO much easier and less stressful just having this one debt left instead of all the other debts I had before.

Had a friend like this. Doesn't matter what the math says, they're living on their own no matter what. $80k a year is doable as a salary in Vancouver, BC. It's hard to save and invest off of $80k, though. High taxes, high CoL, etc. Saving $10k, or even like $6k, in rental costs, would probably go very far in "mental health" facilitation.
