thank you for this video. i was beating myself up because of the fact that my calorie count is different every day and that it's high some days (although not near as high as eating a high carb diet). i haven't lost any weight other than water weight and i was worried that it's never going to work because i can't seem to control my appetite. i'm going to relax and give it time. maybe my body just hasn't adjusted yet. i am cutting my carb intake also from 50g to 25g at the most to see how that works for me as well. this video makes alot of sense. i appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos to help others. you and dr eric berg have become my new doctors.

I get it. We don’t accurately know the calorie content of the foods we are eating and we don’t accurately know our bodies requirements. But, it’s an approximation and maybe that’s good enough. I know that if I eat too much I get fat and that it’s because I am eating more fuel than my body can use so it gets stored. I don’t spend a lot of time counting calories but I do use an app to track my macros and calories are part of the deal. It’s working for me. I don’t plan to stop counting calories and I don’t plan to stop watching your videos. Thumbs up - but I’m not on board with the message of this particular video.

The flaw that you don’t understand that even when counting calories you are off but a marginal amount it doesn’t completely make it useless. I use the estimated calories in my food and the estimated calories I burn to make an estimated guess on my needs. This is very effective, even if the numbers are marginally off. I always track my food because I help others do keto, I share my food, and macros every day, but I'm at the point in my keto, my calories can be listed as 3000 plus and I still lose weight, what seems to matter most is how many carbs and the ingredients. I'm only 5'1 and I am 40 yrs old, by standard calories in calories out, I should not be able to lose an ounce eating like that. In fact I should be gaining rapidly. (133 pounds lost!)

You should volunteer for a metabolic ward experiment where your calories are measured out for you by scientist. If you can truly eat well over the amount of calories you are burning and still lose weight, you would be the talk of the scientific community. You would be the first person in history who has been able to do so in a controlled scientific environment who didn't have some nutrient absorption issue.

I have to track my carbs to keep them below 30g net (right now my limit is 23g net). There are carbs in any plant-based foods, including seasonings and herbs, and those tiny bits add up at the end of the day. I'm not ready to try carnivore just yet. Anyway, remembering how many carbs are in each tiny thing is impossible for me. So I track. But my tracker app also tracks calories, fat and protein so I do see that, but I only observe the other macros just out of curiosity to see my trends. But as long as my carb count stays where it needs to be and the majority of my food is fresh and not processed, I'm good.

@@runekul123 I understand the formula with crystal clarity. It has never worked for me long term and looking at the 95% failure rates for diets, its not working for almost anyone long term. If an overweight person has an insatiable appetite, the question is not "how can they eat less" the correct question is "what is causing the imbalance in the body to have an excessive appetite?" And fix it from the source. Diets dont address the real issues- dieting is like taking tylenol for a headache- it helps, for a little while, but doesnt resolve the ACTUAL issue. And the next time you have a headache, you have to take another Tylenol. When you resolve the underlying weight issues, you never have to diet again. Question: If you are consuming 2000 calories on Keto and 2000 calories on carbs diet, why in the world you lose weight on one and no the other? For god's sake it is because the 2000 calories on keto is not all converted into energy you use to run around, while on the other hand carbs are not used to build things. Whatever carbs are not used they are turned into fat and stored. There is a lot going on obviously.

I've always loved the information you give but you said something that just rang true to me. You said, "The proper human diet is somewhere between a heavy vegetable ketogenic diet and the carnivore diet." My wife and I are eating the ketogenic diet but we do it in VERY different ways. I eat much more animal fats, protein and red meat than she does and she eats many more vegetables, light meats and oils than I do. We have found different foods effect us differently to the point of raising and lowering our ketone levels and our blood sugar levels. I am fascinated by the fact that we both crave very different things. I'm sure it is ancestral as my ancestors came from a very different location than hers.

How interesting! Its a very unpopular opinion , but I have noticed gender has a huge affect how people lose weight and of course genetics.

Not to mention the stress relief that comes from simply eating foods you know are good fuel and forget about tracking! I used to stress so much about making sure my macros were correct, once i stopped obsessing, i started to lose weight. Not where I need to be and struggle sometimes with eating the right stuff all the time, but generally OMAD carnivore and feeling better every day.

Another GREAT VIDEO Dr. Berry. Love my carnivore-leaning Keto OMAD protocol. I am NEVER hungry, burning body fat 24/7, full of energy, super cognitively focused and NEVER EVER count gawd damn calories. I EAT as *I* desire - ONE MEAL A DAY but often have to force myself to eat even that. When I do it's copious quantities of hormone/antibiotic-free 100% grass fed meats (ribeye, NY Strip, Mavrick ground beef), wild salmon, pastured chicken eggs, sardines and use grass raised dairy butter/ghee etc. to cook in if it's not fatty enough naturally. I have migrated from heavy veggie/fiber based keto to about 85% carnivore (lots of onion, garlic, homemade chimichurri sauce [parsley,lemon, olive oil, red wine vinegar, garlic etc]). I am now in the best shape of my life with "hormones of a teen" (per Doc as a senior citizen - testos over the top at 1,320 ng/dl, ripped at 10% Body Fat and highly vascular bulging muscles (still packing more on monthly). Never been this strong in my life - BP down to 106/68, resting heart rate cool as a cucumber at 44-48 BPM, flinging myself over the gym bars like a gymnast and leg pressing 1100 lbs EASILY on a light skeletal 5'10" frame. WISH I knew what I know now 40 years ago. We humans are made to have BEAUTIFUL bodies and to appreciate the sacrifice the animals give us to give us life . True keto ancestral eating should awaken a spiritual insight and reverence for life and a thankful spirit to The Creator. It is GRAVELY WRONG to let one's gift of life be squandered by sloth and gluttony and wrong-eating into decrepit states of health. Give glory to The Creator by eating only to satiety and by being healthy in mind, heart and body and give thanks for the sacred life given to you and His creatures. NO ONE should ever overeat to self abuse once one understands the sacrifice and preciousness of ALL LIFE (Big and small - plant AND ANIMAL). Carnivore style of nutrition refortifies this respect for life.

It amazes me how many women start keto but absolutely insist on sticking to "calories in/calories out" way of dieting even when presented with information that debunks the "science" of calories.
@IQTech614 жыл бұрын
@Ethan James, THIS woman lost a lot of water weight AND bodyweight without counting calories. I just took a flight on an airplane for the first time in three years. I have gone from needing a lap belt extender that barely fit to not needing the extender and having a good fifteen inches of belt left over when it was properly cinched. More importantly, even Weight Watchers, the Queen of Calorie Deprivation diets told us we would see a lot of weight loss the first week or so because we would lose a lot of water weight. What they didn't tell us was that we would also lose muscle mass and probably have mental health issues because in the 90s, Weight Watchers was fatphobic and even discouraged healthy fat like avocadoes and olives.

Thank you so much Dr Berry. I have to say that in my own personal journey that after a couple of weeks of "keto" eating in the beginning, I found that my blood level ketone measurements were below what would be considered a state of ketosis. I was simply eating too many carbs still, not much, but still too many. There was no weight loss, and the big tell... I was still hungry A LOT and was continually "tempted" to eat between meals. It wasn't until I measured my blood levels that I came to understand that I needed a baseline for eating and that is when I adopted the calorie approach for each meal: Out of the total calories- each meal should contain 70% calories from fat - 25% calories from protein-5% calories from Carbs. This paradigm took work to educate myself on caloric counts for the foods I was eating and I made sure to stick to it. After several months of educating myself, I can look at a meal and know what I need to do to make it "keto compliant". Most of the time that just means adding some good fat....a salad with good oil... or maybe a fat bomb. It became easy over time....but it is still counting calories....not in the traditional sense. Since I've adopted this approach, I've lost the traditional hunger pangs (constant hunger is a sure sign of non-keto-compliance) and have dropped an additional 20 pounds. Just a note to anyone else out there on this journey: If you find yourself looking for "keto friendly" food and you know you are carb addicted, stop it. "KETO FRIENDLY" sweetened or "bread substitute" etc should be viewed with a cautionary eye. Removing ourselves from the destructive carb paradigm means making sure when we eat, it is keto compliant....keto "friendly" will not be your friend if it triggers old habits. Just a heads up. Thanks again for all you do Dr Berry!

@skinnyketo28605 жыл бұрын
Not counting works to some extend... depending you your goals.... Many people can lose weight without tracking but once they reach a certain BF% and want to lose more, it pretty much comes down to tracking calories. If they are able to really eat when hungry, don't overeat and all that jazz, it is quite possible to lose a substantial amount of weight. There are several things that come up though... - how much fat and how much lean muscle did they lose without tracking protein intake? If that is important to you (and it should) you need to track. Best example are super high-fat low protein keto followers. Skinny fat comes to mind there. If that's what you are going for... you're all good then. - what is your goal? Do you want to get lean, +/-25 BF, then in my experience you need to look at calories (and fat macros) to get there. Losing 100lb when you start at 300, is different from losing 50 when you are 170 SW. - Many individuals don't have the "feeling full" feeling - ever. Eating to satiety is pretty much out of the question there... many need tracking, especially after the first initial weight loss happened. They might be less hungry on keto but not enough to be in a deficit. The consequence is a weight loss stall. Not tracking correct weight loss macros is the #1 reason for a weight loss stall. So if you are happy with your results, go on and don't track. I would ALWAYS track just to make sure I get the protein I need and I get my minerals and vitamins in as well (which you can track on your app). Also, if you track your macros in grams you are automatically tracking your calories... so no biggie. All in all you are ONLY doing yourself a favor if you track. It ONLY has advantages in my books. Sub-optimal weight loss and health is just that, mediocre.

Yea this guy is right. We’re clearly not capable of accounting for our calories counted for the day being off 5-10%. That’s too much math, so we better stop counting and just pick the fork up and eat all the bacon and steak we want. I’m sure we’ll be good if we eyeball it. 😂

I disagree, to some extent at least. Yes, you cannot precisely calculate the number of calories eaten and then burnt, but the 4-4-9 kcal estimation works. At least it worked for me. I did calories counting very precisely and I lost weight by the book. But it was a terrible experience and I think it is the reason to never do it. KETO is much easier and fun. 😃

I just now started inputting my cals in Myfitness pal after many years hiatus. Only because I had people accuse me of "starving" since starting keto and I wanted to show that I was ingesting quite a lot. Per your video, numbers probably are not very accurate as food varies with things like size, where it was grown, when picked ( or in my case of eating mostly carnivore- perhaps when slaughtered or if my meat was grass fed, etc ) but I have an approximation and at least can show, cals REALLY don't count when it comes to weight loss. Last time I did Myfitness pal was back in 2017 when I was calorie restricted and was 137lbs, and was shocked to see how much damn weight I had put on after being put on a med and how much I struggled to lose even though I was keeping cals and my fat low, lol! 137 lbs does not sound like alot. But a month prior I was 122lbs!!!! After being put on zyprexa my weight skyrocketed. On 5/21/17 I saw a snapshot of my typical food diary. Calories-1047,carbs 117, fat 44 and protein 52. And it went up to the 150's (although I stopped weighing myself and probably got to the 160's) A few days ago on keto- 8/7/19 - cals 2,034, Carbs 21, fat- 156, protein 132. Weight 111!!! Before anyone tells me I was starving on cal restriction in 2017 and that's why I was gaining weight, I found another entry way back in 2012 with my typical cals being closer to what I eat now except being carb heavy. In oct 2012 I ingested around 1,856/carbs 220/fats 63/protein 101. My weight was the high 120's. I thought this was excellent. But never knew I could eat more like I do now.. feel satiated and weigh EVEN LESS. Back in 2012 I was always hungry and interspersed amongst those "normal healthy days" were entries of my binging due to carb addiction. ANyways, sorry for the long response. but am a believer in the fact that calories JUST don't count. If that were the case, I'd have been superskinny with cals at 1047 in 2017 or as lean as I am now with cals being 1856 in 2012. I wasn't. Now I am lean and athletic in 2018 and 2019 while in my 40's. Maintaining. No binges. And only "count" once in a great while to prove to detractors that I love to eat my protein and fat!

Being off by 5% doesn't mean anything. Your daily activity and calories burned daily changes by more than 5% too. And omg, my 45lb weight plates actually weigh between 44-46lbs. Better stop lifting too? You don't have to be 100% accurate for tracking to work. Come on dude. 🤣 There's literal, actual proof you're wrong in the people who lose fat tracking calories. You literally lied when you said it never works. And guess what, keto can work too! And guess what, you can track calories (but omg might only be 95% accurate) WHILE being keto. And there's people who have gained weight on keto. If it works for you, do it. But hating on something that works and makes someone healthier because they didn't do it your way is silly. And saying it doesn't work when there's evidence it does is just incorrect at best and lying at worst. Good luck in your health everyone.
@pikminzeldamarioguy4 жыл бұрын
While the individual points may seem like nitpicks, add all three together and you could easily be off by 50% or more in a day's estimate. Thats the point hes making. that if you estimate that you ate 4k calories on a fat-heavy day, it could actually count for as little as 2k, since protein calories and animal fat calories are so far off in their estimates. generally when you eat low carb you naturally regulate your hunger to match your needs
