Noryangjin-dong is the neighborhood with Korea's largest fish market and a famous tourist spot, but there's more to Noryangjin than just the market. Beyond the raw fishies and live octopus is a world of academies, goshiwons, and cup rice. In Noryangjin, many Koreans aspire to become civil servants, police officers, or a firefighter. The entire commercial district has adapted to these people's needs. That's how, for example, the cup rice alley came to life. But things aren't always as they seem. There's a darker side to the goshiwons in particular. I'll take a deep dive into the fish market and goshiwon culture. Enjoy neighborhood number 41!
노량진동은 관광지로 유명한 우리나라 최대 어시장이 있는 동네이지만, 시장 외에도 또 다른 세계가 있습니다. 생선회와 산낙지 너머에는 학원, 고시원, 컵밥 등이 줄 지어 있죠. 노량진에는 공무원, 경찰관, 또는 소방관이 되기를 열망하는 학생들이 몰려들고 이에 맞춰 상업지구도 함께 형성되었습니다. 컵밥 거리처럼요! 하지만 보이는 것이 다는 아닙니다. 특히 고시원에는 어두운 면이 있죠. 저는 수산시장과 고시원 문화를 깊이 파고들어 보려 합니다. 41번째 동에 오신 것을 환영합니다!

보통 주중 이른시간에 돌아다니며 영어 잘하시고 이런분들 보면 근처 건물 몇채 주인이거나 그런 경우가 많더라고요

고시원은 몸 뿐만 아니라 생각마저 좁은 공간에 갇히는 무서운 곳이었던 것 같네요 하지만 언젠가는 나갈 수 있다는 희망만 있다면 암울해보일지모르는 현재는 부끄러운게 아닙니다 저도 1년정도 있었던 곳이지만 다들 힘냈으면 좋겠네요

노량진의 무서운 점은 학원가가 발달한 만큼 놀거리도 발달했다는게 아닐까 싶습니다. 물가도 저렴하고 사람과 놀거리도 많으니 오락의 유혹에 빠져버리기 너무나 쉬운 환경인거죠...

예전에 심각한 갈등을 겪던 노량진시장 이전문제를 다룬 다큐?를 본 기억이 나는데 구시장이 결국 완전히 사라지고 축구장이 생겼군요

고시원이라는게 1980년초에 서울대생들이 행정고시나 외무고시 사법고시등을 준비하면서 조용하고 집중할수 있는 자기만을 위한 공간이 생겨난것 부터가 시초라고 보면 이해하기가 쉽지 않을까 싶구요.. 그리고 1980년 이후에는 서울지역에 주택 재개발 열풍과 동시에 빈민가가 아파트로 바뀌면서 도심에 살던 빈민들이 살수있는 저가 주택이 사라져서 고시원이라는 원래의 취지가 변질되어서 돈없는 빈민들의 주거목적으로 되었다는 겁니다.. 1990년대부터 본격적으로 대학가에 고시텔이라는 원룸형태의 주거가 생기면서 전국적으로 퍼지면서 이런것을 사업적으로 활용하고 직장인이나 지방에서 올라오는 학생들이나 일용직 노동자들이 사는 형태로 되어 버렸다는거죠... 추가로 옥탑방 반지하 고시원 쪽방촌은 진짜로 없애야 하는 주거문화이고 최악이라는것을 우선적으로 알려드리는바입니다......//

Thank you for your such special videos. I love watching your arts. I like them because it is very interesting how foreigners view dongs in Seoul. Noryangjin is also famous for urbam redevelopment areas. There are 8 areas and a lot of old buildings will be destroyed and new apartments will be rebuilt. I think you might not like this news because you like old places.

Noryangjin fish market is definitely a good place to visit. One of the coolest things is that it also has restaurants where you can eat the fish you bought in one of the stalls.

여기는 지날떄 많이 지났는데 컵밥이 이런것인 줄은 몰랐네요. 여튼 가성비좋고 맛도 좋고.... 노량진과 더불어 신림동도 고시촌의 메카로 유명했지요. 그리고 노량진 시장은 노라조의 고등어 라이브를 거기서 했지요 ㅋㅋㅋ

I used to live in Korea (my family still lives there, except myself, my brother and my mom; we now live in America). It's too bad there's a bad opinion of goshiwon; it seems very practical. When I went to university, I lived in a building that used to be dorms until the 1980s when they were renovated into tiny apartments. They were half the price of a 1 bedroom apartment. It was convenient for me because between semesters and during holidays like spring break, they kick everyone out of school housing. That left me nowhere to go, because I didn't have family in America I could stay with, and flying all the way to Korea was too expensive. So I had to find off campus housing I could afford. It was bigger than a goshiwon, at around 13 sqm. But unlike a goshiwon, I had to do everything in that space: sleep, shower, cook, eat, study, laundry, etc. But I didn't mind because I had it to myself.

여기도 개발때문에 익숙한 풍경들이 조금씩 없어지고 있죠. 오래 살던곳 근처라 풍경이 바뀔때마다 오래전 기억들이 없어지는거 같아서 아쉽습니다.

전에 저희 아버지한테 원래 중림동에 있던 수산시장이 노량진으로 이사했다고 들은 적이 있습니다. 초등학생 때 이후로 안 가봤는데 원래 시장이 철거하고 옆으로 이사한건 몰랐네요.

Noryangjin is very...kinda place that two-sided feelings come for outsiders. Two streets separated by a major road and connected by an overpass are divided by people with completely different needs. One side, theres so many academies and students who give up all their needs for future, and the other side, there's so many people, mixed with outsiders, get there to buy sashimi for special night. Of course in the academic street also have some drink bar or PC Bang though...but most of there are very cheap and so...how can I say, feels like people in that place wanna forget everything. In some times, entire alleys are so faded and blurred mood. For my experience from few years ago, most of those kind of drink bars are selling drinks so cheap, and don't go over 100,000 won for 4~6 people. It's usually for bragging from seniors who get passed from public exam. Because of they're not paid well and also they just started their career, they only able to afford there. If someone get to Noryangjin for the meeting, they usually never go to the academy places. And also the students never cross the overpass either. That streets are just like the spawing pool of Korean public service, but seems really lone and depressed.

노점 운영 하시는 분들이 저렇게 이기적이고 공공의식이 없습니다. 영업 하기 유리한 맥도날드 앞에 있다가 쫒겨왔다는 식으로 얘기를 하네요. 공공질서나 보행권 같은 공익 의식은 전무합니다. 동작구청에서 현재의 자리로 부스까지 만들어 그들의 영업권 까지 보장하고 거리 질서도 확보하면서 win-win한 겁니다. 우리 사회의 가장 어려운 계층인 척 하며 공중 질서를 팔아 알토란 같은 고소득을 취하는 그들을 사회의 암적 존재로 생각합니다.

대부분 고시원을 다닐때 부모가 비용을 지원해주는데 여러해 합격을 못하면 그만큼 계속 도움을 받아야하기 때문에 부끄러워 하는게 아닐까요 ?ㅎㅎ

마지막 말씀대로 요즘 물가는 올라가는데 공무원월급은 그대로 박봉이니 인기가 떨어지면서 노량진도 상권이 많이 죽었지.....

요즘 뉴스보면 그런거 같습니다. 군대도 사병월급200 어쩌고 나오는데 정작 군간부들은 월급이 공무원들과 다르지 않을 정도로 박봉에 동결에 그래서 군 간부들이 많이 떠나는 중이죠. 뭐 이건 이근이나 김상호와 같은 군인출신들이 자주 언급되지요.

I'm surprised officers don't earn a lot of money. Here in Canada police officers are paid very well and get paid even more when they work extra events or overtime. I wonder if the lack of pay has to do with low crime rates in Korea.
