Keeping the width at 27mm and major dimension at 20cm x 22cm without the battery.
@nanaki-seto6 жыл бұрын
it could be done i suspect. Your biggest problem would be the case for it. There's little reason why some itx boards could not be used for a custom laptop. There are plenty of super thing and small led lcd and oled panels out there. Cabled would not be to huge a problem. You would need to find a flat dport display cable (should be a ebay search away) a pcie extension cable to let you mount your vid card etc flat inside. You should be able to keep it around a inch and half thick yeh quite thick for a laptop today. But that thickness would give you allot of options for the aesthetics. Thicker towards the back set your board in so that the cpu etc sits along the back of the machine for cooling. Vid card something in a half height and half length card along one side or the other ports along the other side. Bu a thin high quality keyboard and decase it and mount in to your custom 3d printed laptop case. Yes doable no not easy nore fast.

The main problem with modifying laptops is that most of the components are hard-wired to the board, requiring soldering knowledge and experience to add the functionality you want. However, I have custom-build laptops before, my best example being taking a Windows laptop board and a Mac laptop board and placing them on top of each other inside an old Dell 2005 laptop. I changed the screen for a thin monitor that I mounted inside the original screen area of the laptop, then added a splitter to the two boards with a switch in between. It allowed the user to turn on both boards at the same time (via an external power supply unit that plugged into a single port that connected to both laptop boards) and switch between which computer was displaying on-screen, or even splitting the screen to show both at the same time. I also hacked one of the usb ports on each of the computers, and using an old keyboard rigged it on the same switch to integrate into both boards as well, followed by the trackpad, too. I loved that thing. It was a small, easy way to have compatibility between both operating systems.

You can mod laptops to an extent. Sometiems. Optical drive bays can be swapped out for HDD or SSD storage, or secondary batteries in some older models. Keyboards are swappable within given models for regioning purposes. And the physical case can be painted; etched or (within limits) have new surface features or textures applied. It's also not strictly required that the laptop remain a laptop during a modding procedure. If you want you could use a laptop for a base/donar system for a strange looking desktop.
@vacefron78355 жыл бұрын
Well you can in Europe. You can buy a laptop without a cpu (full desktop cpu's that is even the 9900k) so-dimm ram ,disk's and wifi bluetooth dongle and they just provide the motherboard and screen you have to install the rest + screen is 2560x1440 144hz g sync and they sell rtx 2080 max q cards that are dedicated so they can be upgraded or purchased separetly.

you can build your own laptop but you'll either need a bare bones unit or a single board computer (e.g. raspberry pi) or you'll need an ATX motherboard, custom case, Lots of 18650 lithium ion cells, custom designed power supply and a lunchbox style case so that all the components will fit

That Baston To clarify, since tablets are even worse about everything being soldered on than regular laptops, my idea was more of how to build a proof of concept for the customizable laptop. Essentially, the idea being that if you can build everything you need to expand & customize the functionality of a tablet in space the size of a gaming laptop(or smaller) that can also fit the tablet, this concept is a lot more viable than Linus wants to think.

Reza Alteria They’re nice, but Clevo sadly skimp out on other features of their machines, like decent keyboards and speakers. I’m also kind of fed-up with MXM cards, because you cannot realistically replace them. Sure, you can on paper, but the cards cost literally twice as much as the desktop versions. $1000 for a 1080 is ridiculous. And you can’t even sell the old MXM card because such a small number of people want it, no one would buy it. Instead of paying so much for just one part, I’d rather just sell the entire laptop and buy a new one for a little more cash.

@Techquickie ASUS made a custom build series about a decade ago. It was meant for smaller shops to compose their own model for sale but ended up with smaller shops letting customers make the compositions. It was great, cheap and the machines were strong (with the right components of course). CPU, GPU, RAM and disk was all customizable. The barebone system was only chassis, monitor, motherboard and mousepad.

Way back in the late 80’s our computer store built custom Lunchbox type PCs. Smaller than a portable, but bigger than a laptop. Came with orange monochrome vga screens. I think the fastest we built were 486. Most were 386 based. Remember when The Brick 🧱 PC cases were all the rage? Along with small keyboards and 9-12” monitors.

Buddy of mine built his own laptop from parts he found on the electronics scrapyard. You'd be surprised how often people throw entire electronics out when just one component fails. His was bulky as can be, probably wouldn't fit in your average laptop bag and most probably not on par with factory laptops of the time (2010), but it did work. Ran Windows XP very smoothly. We had plans to build a top of the line microATX or Mini ITX in one of the 1987 Philips NMS8250 cases I still have, but sadly we moved to different cities and contact has faded.

Ever heard of Clevo? It's a company that makes highly customizable laptops, with socketed CPUs and almost every other component also swappable. The only minus is that they only sell their laptops to "resellers" that add the components for you, but once you have it you can still add your own components. I bought one and it even ended up costing less!

"Some company upgrading their hardware literally tossed laptops and other equipment and dumped it off at the shop." Wish this would happen less often. : / Or at least for good reasons. What can't people do at work with core2duo machines ? Except for graphists and developpers, these CPUs are still perfectly fine for browsing and office suites. Just last week, I've set up a simple Dell D410 (Core Duo "classic") for my father who needs to browse and type some documents either with Aboword or LibreOffice (I thought of a Xubuntu but, I let him stick to Win XP sp3). Great job and kudos to your guy for not giving on these. He works at a recycling shop but I so wish more people would learn more skills about assembling computers and a few but important things on how to deal with it. Thanks to TechQuickie for getting their sleeves up on this. : )
@JohnSmith-xq1pz6 жыл бұрын
@@Nalojuntu Tell me about it. I've seen it happen too. Yeah vintage or newer stuff he's saved anything worthwhile. His shop doesn't just do recycling, anything worth fixing and reselling gets fixed up and sold in the shop. Kinda the same setup as the shop Linus and crew toured in that one video. Edit True of a friend of mine. He can't understand why I held onto my Pentium D until the motherboard died. Or why I still have my Dell inspiron 1300,or two inspirons 6400s. He thinks there old useless etc
@johnfrancisdoe15636 жыл бұрын
Commentaires It's usually because they want all the machines in the company to be the same so they can swap parts and even entire machines and get on with the job. Companies like that literally makes multi year plans as to when they buy the next heap of identical computers, set them up and toss the old ones. Between the upgrade years, they refuse almost all upgrades because that would ruin the swapability and would need to be tossed when the machines are tossed before the parts are paid back.

Same principle applies to big 20 to 150 gal aquarium which is much easier to customize and accommodate the amount decorations, a CO2 systerm, and a filtration system; than to a 10 gal or smaller nano-tank which can also be detrimental to the fish or livestock housed inside the aquarium. While heat is the byproduct of a machine's functions, the aquarium has to deal with chemical and biological waste of everything in the water, from the chemicals that become concentrated overtime to the amount of debris from food and fish waste. Both aquarium and machine has to properly have enough "space" to prevent them from turning the machine into an expensive brick-oven or for the aquarium turning into a chemical soup.
