Why Can't You Install Windows on an Xbox?

360 and original can run Linux (you need to mod your xbox though) And yes, you can run windows 1.0 on the NES if you replace the cpu, gpu, insert a floppy drive, replace the case, ports - so basically move the pc near the NES and run the pc.

Someordinarygamers has a video on it where he was running Master Chief Collection on a PS4 by modding it, installing Linux, then going into a gaming windows VM to play MCC from steam. Though you may as well just build a PC at that point.

@@pauldeshield Not necessarily piracy, but because of the game console business model. Game consoles are sold for less than what it costs to make them. This is what makes them affordable. Once you're in, the platform owner gatekeeps the game store through liscencing deals, first-party titles, and cuts of all sales on the platform. These are more than enough for them to make that money back. Installing Windows would allow gamers to bypass their business model by installing GOG/Steam. Right now, IIRC, the Series X/S costs around $500 to produce, and that's the price the X is being sold at. The S beng sold at a loss becomes more apparent because it has no disc drive. No second-hand games or rentals can work, making you more tied into M$' revenue stream.

Cartriges referred here are ROMs. Data on them can be acceced practically as fast as RAM and is pretty much treated as RAM, just not the kind that can have data changed on it. Switch is using flash storage that is treated just like an ssd or hardrive or SD card, so data from it has to be transferred to RAM before it can be used.

The Xbox does use a modified Windows 10 core though, with special containerized HyperV layer in the kernel.

The Xbox consoles have used a version of Windows as their basis from day one. The very first Xbox actually was based on Windows 2000. This despite the fact that XP had been released just before the console was. Clearly Microsoft has an easier time adapting the OS to work in such an odd environs, but that's what you get when you own the code.

@@anarrchybob6420 The 360 does use the exe format (PE) for all executables, they're just contained in xex files (and usually encrypted and compressed). Interestingly, they also have their own machine type for ppc64, which Windows NT isn't really compiled for (pre-NT 5.0 is compiled for ppc32 though). I don't know too much about the Xbox, but I'm sure its xbe files are also just a container for a normal Windows NT PE.

You would have to solder in a chip that forces the XBOX to boot from a USB that spoofs the system into loading files off it and maybe rewrite the BIOS. Or maybe the soldered chip replaces it. Then you could install Windows. But why? More than likely you'd have to make a custom MOBO, but now you built a low end PC.

@@oyasumioyasumi Don't worry too much about the tones. You'll get use to it real quick. Just listen to the words a lot and the tones will feel like a normal part of the pronunciation. Also, use tools like pleco, a sophisticated chinese dictionary and learn by the media. Also all chinese shows have subtitles on it.

As for Chinese ,there are tons of different accents from different Chinese speaking country ,such as Taiwan ,China and Singapore. So don't be worried about tone wrong ,just talk more and listen more since learning start from mimicking, and one day you well have your own accent. Keep going!

Fun fact Xbox(At least 360) has compatibility with HTFS+ which is what Mac uses. I assume one could install hackintosh on their Xbox. I used it to play movies from a hard drive.

@@azarilh2355 uhh the main appeal of Macs is their OS. In fact I have macOS Mojave installed on my Lenovo Thinkpad (illegally, of course), and the day to day experience of using macOS is sooo much better than using Windows 10.

Hey Linus! I have a friend that was able to rip the operating system off the Xbox and get it to run in a virtual machine after lots of research and development. @linus tech tips he was able to do some pretty cool stuff using that method.
