You can now buy tickets for Montreal's 747 airport bus line on your phone, but the city still lags behind most major cities when it comes to paying for public transit. The Société de transport de Montréal has looked into changes, but bureaucratic setbacks have held up the process.

Great video showing the real issue with Montreal transit... And then what's even more awful... you still need to get ticket from the ticket booth or machine AND there's barely any at each metro station! STM was never about making the services is better for the users... Especially now with less people getting the monthly pass. Users are waiting more and more line to get tickets because no tap as you go, like most cities.

@@TalwinderDhillonTravels yes i did. It’s says the stm was working on it but still didn’t do it. Yes Artm cancelled it. But still it’s Stm could have done long ago too. Or work in improving accessibility. Artm took over the tickets and price not long ago. And then who decided how many tickets booth are at the metro subway. It’s the STM. Not the artm.

I visited Brossard in October, and after a long waiting for the bus( one bus an hour), I just realized that I need a 2 zone ticket. I didn't bring enough coins, and I couldn't use credit cards to pay for it. Driver asked me to pay or walk. so humiliating. Finally, I pay bills and felt so sad.

Vancouver has had this technology for 10 years now, with the ability to tap to pay with your credit card going back 5 years now… Considering our network is younger than Montreal’s or Toronto’s, it’s certainly embarrassing for Montreal not have launched this technology on their system

The challenge in Montreal and its surrounding areas ("la couronne") is that fares must be worked out by a single authority, where there is no opportunity to pay according to the actual distance traveled. We do not have a system where the rider "checks out" of the transit system to calculate how much they owe, unlike other cities. Our simplified system of zones means that someone traveling from Ste-Thérèse to St-Jérôme will pay the same price as someone going from Montreal to St-Jérôme. Tap to pay may be technologically possible, but it introduces more costs, which may not be recouped, especially with the zone fare system. Another problem I find in Montreal is that too many riders, especially around university areas are boarding busses without paying and walking through metro turnstiles. Many are international students and those under 30. Once they see that they do not get fined, it becomes a habit. The STM has to enforce the regulations. Otherwise it will lose control and revenues.

Its easy enough to have change on you if you plan ahead, but so much easier to just tap and go. I feel like there's no excuse. Assuming the default item you're buying is the 3.75$ ticket, it shouldn't be that difficult to implement in their system because the machine where you put your change for the one ticket is the exact same thing. And peoples data being compromised? have they ever heard of online shopping? preauthorized bill payments? Stores and restaurants with card terminals? Not to mention their very own online source to load our own opus card using our card data. Just an excuse. Its old news that peoples card information doesn't just get kept or compromised. Quebec needs to get with the times already!!

IMO we should have ditched the OPUS card for a system like presto when we were preparing for the REM. We had the chance but they didnt take it. In montreal a student have actually made an app that allows you to charge the opus card on your phone with NFC!But we still dont have anything official. If a single uni student can make it work in their free time, why cant the ARTM do it? It doesnt make any sense.

but even so the video show leval is still paper transfer. Toronto already remove all paper transfer and have it under all your card, like transit card and CC all have the transfer already included. Even leval is still lagging to have it switch from paper to paperless transfer meaning when you tap you know when is expired or something like that

I think in Canada if your a citizen you should be exempt from paying transit system only City's buses should be chipped you don't pay nothing but u enter and thye know it's u Canadian Citizen and tax season they adjust which ever the amount. This type of system would create less usless machines yes it was fun we know thye work and sometimes they don't yes it was made created and so on but year 2023 and testing is over and time to pull out and create what's needed and less b's and like crap but keep on testing and creating and pull out crap that has been tested and in time should get replaced by new system that will work and save money and time for other in ventured new crap even when it's fun to see i later will become crap and so on for the better. Let me know what you think?
