I think it comes down to one simple fact - the pool of players capable of winning has gotten larger. A lot larger. This is makes it a lot harder for the true big dogs to dominate. That said, the cream of the crop is still there. Calvin has 1 win and a podium finish on every tourney he's played so far, except for the last one (Blue Ridge). Gannon has one ES win and two Silver wins. Simon was slow out of the gate at Vegas, but since then has a 2nd and a win, with only 10 competitive rounds played so far.

Here are my theories: As disc golf gets more popular and there’s more money involved in the tournaments, it’s making people play harder because there’s more incentive to win. Previously dominant players like McBeth are beginning to go past their prime. Not saying McBeth is bad, he’s still very competitive, but he’s lost just enough of an edge that other people are beating him more often. Which again could motivate people to play better when they know there isn’t a “king” of the tour. A lot of tournaments use the same exact course every single year and the difference in inherent skill diminishes when players get to play the same courses over and over and learn all their secrets. Unfamiliar courses favor naturally better players over those who have to “learn” to be competitive. We’ve gotten to a point where the best players have reached a skill ceiling and can’t get better so weaker players are catching up until a new meta is figured out.

The three players this season that have won on chase card are Gannon Buhr, Kyle Klein, and Simon Lizotte. None of them are weak players. Gannon won a major last year, Kyle has been in the mix many times, and Simon will go down as one of the best to play this sport. Paul, Ricky, Calvin are not winners because they memorize courses, they are naturally good just like the other three. I do think Paul’s focus is on other things and could be the reason he hasn’t won this season and in his pre tournament interview for Champions Cup said he doesn’t really care about Elite or Silver wins, only majors. We will see how he does this weekend

It seems like there's a few that are in the mix to win at this point. Those coming from the chase card are top 10 players and I think they're putting the pressure on guys that may slip into lead card but don't have the skills or mental game to maintain. I imagine being a less skilled player on a lead card and seeing guys like Simon and Gannon put together a great finishing round has to be incredibly tough on your ability to finish strong.

It's evident this year - the Final Card isn't guaranteed to win. Everyone is hungry. You need to score a hot 1020 round in order to get passed the chase card nowadays with the young guns coming up. I feel like it's much easier to score a hot round at disc golf vs ball golf. That's the yield Tiger had in the PGA tour. He was a better putter on the greens when it came to crunch time. Pretty much everyone is really good at putting on the PDGA tour. It's a matter if you can hit bullseye which each shot.

And also in blue ridge championships Gannon won from chase card
@DarttheLegend Жыл бұрын
I usually agree with you on most things, but I don’t agree that it’s “anyone’s tournament from here on out” these clips evidence the reason why these guys won from chase card was because they had some of the absolute best rounds of their lives coupled with major mistakes from the lead card guys in the final rounds. Combine that with the fact that often they were actually tied with someone on chase card that just had a lower PDGA number than them. I do think it is a bit of coincidence that it has happened this many times in a row and I predict it will not become the standard going forward. The field is not “stronger than it used to be” it is simply packed with highly skilled, yet HIGHLY INCONSISTENT players now. Consistently dominant is becoming a thing of the past only because individual players are playing at wildly different levels weekend-to-weekend.
@discgolfcontent Жыл бұрын
"Anyone's Tournament" that's in the top 10 going into the final round this year is what i mean. Anyone in the top 10 going into the final this year has been in striking distance for the win (3 strokes). that hasn't been the case in the past this consistently.
@gnarwhalnoah Жыл бұрын
Dunno if highly inconsistent is a fair term. I think more players have the ability to score very well than before, no one is consistently dominating, but we do have many familiar faces in the top 10 of each tournament. To me that seems like the field as a whole (or at least the top 20ish) have improved to where they have a chance at winning, compared to in the past when you really only had 5 or so guys who had reasonable chances at winning any given tourney. That leads to inconsistency between tournament placings, but when the difference between 1st and 20th is 5 strokes it's hard to call 20th an inconsistent result when score-wise it's just a few errors over 3 days of play that change the outcome. No player is always gonna be able to avoid that, so it's just a matter of who plays better on the weekend and right now many people are capable of playing at that level if they avoid those mistakes
@DarttheLegend Жыл бұрын
@@gnarwhalnoah as someone who has been present since the 90s, there were always 20 guys capable of coming in 2nd to Climo at any given tournament as long as it was a big enough tournament.
