Hyper futuristic nowadays is bad, but hyper futuristic from the 80s, that's where it's at, Japanese sports cars built in the 90s were well and truly ahead of their time, in addition to looking extremely badass they were performance machines, that's what modern vehicles lack on my opinion, they might have the modern technology and be ahead of their time in some ways, but they lack the style and the performance

You have pedestrian safety rules and other rules making the front of cars bigger, and to try to maintain the proportion you are forced to enlarge everything. That said I like the older one more too.

@@dxshawn532 I think it's more fun and engaging. I can honestly say that driving a stick shift is worth perhaps 100 hp in terms of daily driving "excitement." To clarify, if I had one car to drive everyday, driving a slow car with a stick feels like I'm driving a much better car than if I was driving the same car with an auto. Like "race to 30" fun. IDK, I don't feel like I'm explaining it very well. My last car was a ~400 HP Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with cam, headers, supercharger, premium gas...and an auto. My current car, a 1.4L Jetta, has only 147 hp and a 6M trans. It is MUCH slower, but I don't notice because I'm having so much fun rowing the gears every day. Maybe for some people it's more "macho," but in my experience only the base-est cars seem to come in sticks (or the most expensive versions of desirable car, i.e. G8 GXP), and I know more girls who *currently* drive stick than guys, because of cars like Corollas and Bugs, "girl cars." My Camaro is an 88 and its auto, most were even 30 years ago.

If you know your vehicle (having it long enough), and one of these three things was a little out of whack, no matter how big or small, something needed to be checked..... But there in lies the main problem today, Most people today don't have the ability to know the difference of is what right and wrong for each. And even if they do, they might not know how to work on them. I can work on a carbureted engine and I know some of the newer fuel injected ones but there are somethings, especially with computers attached to them, that you don't have a choice with and it is expensive.

Justin Noker I agree but, I’m trying to say that most newer engines have components that are much more computerized. And a lot of the covers for engines nowadays have wiring all over them so you have to be really delicate removing the engine cover as to not yank out some ignition wire or fuel line. Cause back then all you had to do was pop open the hood disconnect some wires, remove the battery, drain the oil, remove the radiator tubing, take out the bolts that hold the engine to the chassis and your ready to yank it out. Nowadays you have to do a lot more useless bullshit to make sure you car computer doesn’t blow up when your taking the engine out.

In terms of performance auto has overtaken humans so in sport cars if all you care about is 0-60 performance auto is the way to go anyway. Manual in econ cars for the US is dead in new models and regretfully newer gens are either forced to pre-broken 1k cars or bank financed brand new within 3 yr cars. There is little choice anymore now.

We had a very similar issue in the 70's when emission standards struck. Early emissions equipment made it to where throttle response was poor and overall performance weak. It took obvious R&D to effectively combat the problem. Manufacturers need to figure out a way to make the vehicles lighter and more impact compliant via external metalworking. There's no way currently with all of the bloated electronics and airbag equipment, essentially making the vehicle a 3,600 lbs.+ understeering empty soda can.

I really believe these heavy cars are a huge issue. More wear on roads (probably) and it’s just more dangerous in a collision. If it weren’t for heavy modern vehicles, lighter older vehicles wouldn’t really be seen as “unsafe” to drive.

I am in UK and assume you are in US. UK still has lots of manuals, probably over 50%. We drive smaller cars, more typically a 1 to 1.5 litre engine around a VW Golf size. UK cars are made for twisty roads and have great handling. US cars are crap at going round a corner, they tried to sell Mustangs here but the back just flips out and you end up in the ditch on the first corner. People actually never use a paddle shift but seem to like the idea of buying a car with it on.

@@Thri11seeker You're delusional. Driving a manual does not give you any extra feel or control. Quite the opposite actually. Feel and control also has little to do with shifting. It's about feedback, balance, weight, distribution, size, centre of gravity, tyres etc. I'd rather drive some light weight auto than drive some big heavy manual because it's going to give me more feedback and a better driving experience. When it comes to manual vs dual clutch, dual clutch blows it out of the park. You get full control on when you decide to shift and you get it at a rate that is faster than can be done by human input.

Like...if you imagine that older cars cost nearly the same back then as new cars now, but they didn't have so much electric and comfort stuff and all the sensors and ECU controlled units and other unnecessary stuff, you can tell why older ones are more reliable. There was a lot less parts to break because of simplicity, plus older cars often have different quality of used materials and they could afford it and still make profit out of it. Now cars don't need to last for ever, 7-10 years is enough, then you can buy new one and you have reliability. But the one who get used one may find himself in huge money pit...because a lot more things that get old and need replacement...just well kept older cars don't brake that much, because there is really not much to break. Just imagine 1 gen Miata...maybe...I don't know...there are silentblocks, also brake pads and...engine, cooling, intake and exhaust? I know there are a lot more stuff, but you get the point. Well...now imagine to maintain new BMW M5 for nearly 30 years with damn dual turbochargers and 3 different cooling ways and with all those ECU's for everything, heated electric seats, adjustable things from center console etc. Also if you would want better materials for reliability and all those comfort stuff...cars would not start from 15-20k or how much it is in America...they could start from 25-35k and most people are good with normal comfort car to get from A to B and they are happy that they didn't pay much and after 10 years they just swap for another one. I personally don't like new cars and would rather buy Datsun 240Z or Charger '69, Plymouth GTX, Hemi Cuda, Challenger '70 or Corvette C1-C7, GTO '65...in our country all of them are very rare and expensive, but 35k couls get you really nice one and it would mean much more for me than any new car in that price category. Even my Jag XJ40 which I got really cheap is damn more exciting than 99% cars on road in the Czech Republic.

Both of my vehicles are manuals. I had a rental for a couple days that was automatic, and I found myself nearly falling asleep behind the wheel. I felt disconnected from the road, it was incredibly boring, and I didn't even want to drive it even though it was like 18 years newer than my car. I think manual transmissions allow for a more connected and rewarding experience on the road. There's less "need' for distractions like a phone if you are enjoying cruising around and constantly shifting gears. But maybe I'm just super ADHD and can't tolerate doing nothing for very long. lol

As a dealer, I see first hand that new cars are not more reliable. The amount of issues that arise because modules and electronic systems become data locked and failed is frustrating. Head units needing to be updated what seems like monthly, customers coming in because cluster gauges or head units do not boot properly, electronic park breaks locking on and not being able to release them....I love my 22 model year truck, but there is a reason I only lease new stuff and don't keep them past warranty.

Amen. Best truck i had was a 91 gmc sonoma. Had to change 1 alternator, 2 radiators, u-joints once, 1 water pump, 1 fuel pump, 1 idler pulley, over 298,000 miles on it when i sold it. Biggest mistake i ever made! Other than brk pads and oil changes things like that. Thats all the work i had to do on it! And got 25 mpg with the 2.8 L V-6, 5 speed. Should have done a restoration on it and would have a brand new trk for less $ than a today new one. Longer lasting too!!

The concept people have of "breaking" is that the car stopped running because they never bothered to change the start, or clean the carb and periodically change the filters. Old cars last forever you just have to do the bare minimum, people nowadays don't wanna do shit.

Sounds like companies are just turning the car industry into the cell phone industry, instead of making good machines that are built to last and easy to work on we're going to get more cars with manufactured obsolescence that will become essentially total'ed or useless after a few years of regular driving so they can sell you the newer version. Most old cars weren't fun either. The fact that the vast majority of the driving population is looking for an appliance on wheels hasn't changed. It's just that we forget old cars that weren't fun and don't preserve them as much. That's why when you go to a classic car meet you see all these beautiful, fun old vehicles and think that every car was like this back then, but this couldn't be further from the truth.

Try electric throttle body + big turbo. Maximum lag! Although I did have al electronic throttle body that was pretty responsive IMO. I could double tap the gas and the engine would rev up twice so I think that is good response.

When I bought my FR-S in 2013, getting the manual transmission was a no brainer. Now, at almost 200,000 miles I still love driving that car. But then, I don't live in an urban area any more so there is very little "rush hour" driving on my commute to Louisville. It's almost all two lane twisties - 150 miles worth every day, on Michelin Pilot SS's (and now S4's). I never get tired of driving a slot car on well maintained Kentucky twisties. They don't have cops. They use Deer instead. :D

"new cars are more reliable" is the biggest joke i've ever heard. These days you're lucky if your car survives 2 years without needing major maintenance. Go back a couple decades and we had cars that went hundreds of thousands of miles with minor maintenance. And whats even worse, old cars are repairable. When a new car breaks you need 6 different computers and need to replace 4 other ones to get it running again.

That's boring and doesn't feel like I accomplished anything.

@@chocolate_pie6989 Tuning most modern cars is pretty easy. Sure someone has to reverse engineer the software, but once that's done you have a shell program to do the heavy lifting. Basically you do it once for a particular ECU and until they car company changes ECUs you are good to go. Tuning within these various programs is pretty straight forward and produces better results than tuning methods for older cars. I mean you talk about "messing with the exhaust manifold" but what are you really doing to it? Really all you can do with it is replace it with a different one or fabricate one. As for your turbo setup, again it requires replacing or fabricating parts, there is no adjusting it. To add on top of that, it's not like you can just slap radically different parts onto an engine and not adjust fuel delivery, air/fuel ratios, and timing. All that really changed is how we tune for the new parts we have, that's it.
