Super glad you're covering this! Shows like The Backyardigans and Bubbleguppies had music that I loved even as an adult! Heck, I even had favorite episodes or songs that I'd stick around for over watching other shows. XD They definitely weren't slacking, and it's neat to see the music being examined in-depth like this!

Hey Adam! Saw your video on Nebula, good stuff. The last song of the episode is a "Baião". The center part of Brasil was similar to the wild west (but with better aesthetics, seriously, google "Cangaçeiro") and they made some pretty good songs. Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes are pretty good, but they are the "Gringo Friendly" part of Brasilian music, for a good old Baião search for Luiz Gonzaga, who was even better than Tom and Vinicius (they said it, not me) but didn't made international success because he was black and wore traditional Cangaço attire.

I've always felt like there is a darkness or sadness in bossa nova music, despite the cheery sound. Castaways especially gives me that feeling. The lyrics are literally about being in a shipwreck and being lost! It feels very "shit's fucked so let's have fun with it i guess". Jeremy Messersmith's 2018 album, Late Stage Capitalism, also uses a lot of bossa nova sound with pretty difficult lyrics. I haven't explored classic bossa nova lyrics too much but the songs often seem to be about yearning or longing. I don't know, maybe it's just the emo in me, but bossa nova always feels a little bit sad to me. And singing "we're stuck where we are, we are castaways" in 2021, after having not left my house for over a year and realizing that I've graduated into a recession... hits different

You're not wrong. Bossa is more often than not quite melancholic(brazilian doomer playlists are filled with it). It has much to do with it's root on samba, that although might seem festive on a first look, has more to it than that. It's melancholic and hopeful, bittersweet missing. That's a cultural thing Brazil and Portugal share. Let me share some lyrics about that from Vinicius de Moraes, one of the composers of Garota de Ipanema: It's better to be happy than sad Happiness is the best thing there is It's like light in our hearts But to make a beautiful samba You need a touch of sorrow Or you won't make a samba [...] Making samba is not telling a joke Those who do just don't get it The good samba is sort of a prayer Samba is sadness that swings And sadness brings always the hope Of one day being sad no more [...] Because samba was born in Bahia And even if today it is white in it's poetry It's heart is still much too black (Samba da Benção)

Also I feel like castaways has this weird subdued feeling, like you're in some way distanced from the events being described. Like the events being described include not having a home and facing potential death at sea, but the emotional vibes I get from it are weirdly muted. That, I think is one of the key reasons people related to it, because recently it feels like a lot of shit has been going down but also accepting it in an emotionally disconnected way is the norm. Also the central theme of having no home, to me that reeks of the current generations collective discomfort.

@@_swesters_ Good idea... In theory. Two things: 1) just because the music is garbage doesn't mean the whole show is. Example: Octonauts is a fantastic show that reuses the same generic canned music every single episode. 2) Unless a show is harmful I don't refuse to let my kids watch it. I want kids to develop their own taste in media and that means letting them experiment with stuff I don't enjoy. Also, I have enough battles with my kids about stuff that matters, I don't need to start a war over a show they want to watch but their know-it-all patent doesn't think the music is good enough.

I was already basically an adult when The Backyardigans first released in 2004, I graduated high school. In 2008 I had my daughter and put on the current children's shows for her and one of my favorites was this show. I would sing along to the songs all the time. So even though this show's demographic was for the generation after mine, I still remember watching it with my daughter so it is nostalgic for me. I probably remember it more than she does lol.
@kaitlyn__L2 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I was wondering if I was just too old. Not adult, but 9, so the style wouldn’t have appealed to me at the time. I was saying “I would’ve loved to grow up with this!” thinking it was at first even more recent, but then the comments talked about growing up with it so I wondered when it was from. I’m glad I got into music anyway but the sheer variety of styles in this show seems tantalising.

As a Brazilian with extensive knowledge of bossa nova, I feel that note in the "castaways" motif should be an E and not an F. F works too, of course, but E *feels* more Bossa nova because Bossa nova loves their sevenths. ;)
@hugobouma3 жыл бұрын
Hard agree. Then it also forms a kind of micro-sequence when in the 7th bar it is actually F, now the 7th of the II chord. Children's choir be damned!
@danielnewby22553 жыл бұрын
It was probably written as an E, but that's gonna be real hard for a kids choir to vibe on. If Hugo's right and it sequences to F on the Gm that little difference would add a notch of difficulty for locking in on the leading tone, which would be a good reason the recording ends up indeterminant.

Our parents generations don’t really get much recognition in wider society and it’s kinda sad because they were ignored when they were growing up too. Maybe that’s why many of them grew up to be better parents than the previous generation. They were the grandchildren of traumatized people and learned the effect that had on their parents. They grew up to be much kinder, understanding, and sincere people-even if just relatively speaking. Though I grew up with Gen X parents, so I might be over-generalizing for the rest of Gen Z.

I'm glad good music has resurfaced more in kids' shows. I grew up during an era where kids' shows went into a dark period of being heavily dumbed down and simplified, and for me (who started with phenomenal quality stuff like Fraggle Rock and Dinosaurs) it was shocking to see. There was good stuff still through the '90s of course (Out of the Box comes to mind, also Puzzle Place) but a lot of kids' TV just got really stupid. That's improved a lot since then and now there tends to be really good artistic and cultural education laced into everything, and it's really good to see.

I'm fairly positive that the second note of the castaways motif should be an E; I've played and analyzed a massive amount of bossa nova, and (from what I've observed) although utilizations of fourths or second melodic transitions over perfect fifth movement happens all the time, straight triads are a rarity, and when they do appear it's near-inevitably over minor triads instead of major (as in the piece). All that said, it might have been made all thirds as it was recently written and other tendencies may as well be out the window, but I think that it would make a ton of sense granted the obvious influence of classic bossa nova on the composers.
@GizzyDillespee3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the flavor wouldn't be quite as immaculate if it were F instead of E. The maj7 is the harmony that brings the "we're on island time, now" vibe with that motif, so I'd want it there melodically, too. Especially if you're about to sit down on the D, the 6th! I think sometimes Adam doesn't want to get too deep in the weeds with these KZbin videos. It's kinda surreal to see so much public interest in music theory!
@Yoghurtacid3 жыл бұрын
@@GizzyDillespee The answer is that it's both - It's A>E>D the first time, and then A>F>D the second time. While there is some inconsistency on the pitch of the original, it's only a matter of cents, not entire semitones.

I got to experience The Backyardigans as a parent of small children. What a pleasure! I love the theme song, which feels both incredibly simple and incredibly deep.

Glad that the Backyardigans are finally getting some recognition. My sister and I grew up watching them, and I have to say, it was a great intro to musical styles from around the world. Whether it was mambo, mariachi, Irish folk, or jazz; I could always count on something new.
