When the leaf gets stuck I usually put a tissue with very warm water over it and most of the time it pops free. Very satisfying 🤣

hi friend! I do know about cataphylls, but as a chronic picker, I struggle to leave them alone. I enjoy the pink princess for this very reason, it gets stuck every time, and it already has several wonky leaves, so if I pick at it, it won't get too much worse.
@Houseplantygoodness2 ай бұрын
Hi friend! I totally get the picker struggle-it’s SO tempting, right? 😅 The Pink Princess is a classic for ‘sticky situations’ (pun intended 😂). Maybe it’s time for us to start a ‘Hands Off Club’ for chronic pickers? 🌿✨
@quickglimpse1012 ай бұрын
try misting them instead of manually pulling. Even if you only use the water as a lubricant when you pull, def introduce some slippage

The Pink Princess is such a diva. 😭 I’m still waiting for cataphyll growth but I don’t know if she’ll ever get there when every single leaf gets stuck to the point that they rip off or come out mangled. In good news, my Florida Ghost just switched to cataphyll and they are BRIGHT PINK and I am even more in love than I was before.

.. "Leave it Alone!!" 😂😂 you made me laugh to tears.. Everytime I watch your videos my cat (and the stray) comes up to snuggle on me.. "yeay, it's Memo time" 😀😽.. I know about the cata... something, but I have never thought about them or removed them unless they were completely dried out like a piece of paper.. My White Wizard never seemed troubled getting new leafs, nor my Billie, Painted lady or any of my other philodendrons.. Not even my Gloriosum.. Sure they take their time when having new leafs, and I'm patiently waiting for nature to work it's wonders, but they never seem to struggle.. But yes, every now and then I do find myself stop and stare at the amazing work of nature.. And when the new leaf is finally "born", I'm so happy as if it was Springtime 🤗

i find that this is where misting really comes in to shine. I wouldn't recommend misting to a plant keeper for just any reason, but a gentle misting of an emergent cataphyll has seemed to greatly help my plants- far better than trying to handily "help" them out their sheath!

Hello Memo, thank you for this video. I experienced the Pink Princess cataphyll problems also with Red Anderson, Strawberry Shake and a little less with all the White Knight, Wizard and Princess. I guess they are closly related. Hearing you mentioning habitats of aroids I can recommend a shop in Germany (also onlins) with very detailed information on the origin of their plants. It's Jungle Leaves. It was founded by 3 young botanists. They are specialized in tropical houseplants with an emphasis on terrarium plants. Due to their studies they got all the scientific background.

I actually thought the plant was going to be a melanochrysum. That is my worst culprit. A few years into my plant journey, however, i am much more casual about "stuck" leaves than i used to be. They generally workvthemselves out, and if not, well, there'll be another new leaf coming around sooner or later 😊 So glad you're feeling better my friend! ❤

I was thinking of syngoniums but yes the pink princess too as well which the cataphyll/new growth point take long to uncurl without more humidity. Another plant that was taking long to uncurl, was my bird of paradise leaves but shame on me, I didn't leave it alone. I damaged one leaf and the other one survived when I pulled it out slowly. I heavily pruned some leaves on it due to sun damage and I wanted to speed up the beauty process but I will leave it alone moving forward.😅

I’m sorry, I could totally be mistaken, did you mention and I missed it the development of different types of cataphyll as the plant matures? Like how in a juvenile plant the cataphyll can be attached to the former leaf and then when that plant matures it develops “independent” cataphylls? I’m so sorry if you did, I am painting my living room while watching and did step out of the room a couple times.

The place where thrips lingered the longest when I had them was in cataphyls (the type of the Pink Princess, in several Calathea), I blasted plants that had those with beneficial mites and the thrips eventually disappeared Loved the “LEAVE IT ALONE” 🤣 Had the well known problem with the Pink Princess a little bit when I just got the plant.. But back then wasn’t in proper light and not enjoying a stream of cold air (I can pronounce the word but always doubting about its spelling, so avoiding typing it works 😅) Its been fine for years now… every now and then it does it, but not as bad as it seems to be for most people.. Maybe the mass tissue culture ones have more issues with it? (I purchased a more mature thick stemmed plant before all those tiny ones appeared everywhere, what I kept now is a top cut from that) Do Syngoniums have Cataphyls? I have issues with one of them not unfurling leaves anymore… and the new leaves get stuck in the old leaves since it tries to grow at lightning speed) Do you have any experience with Syngonium leaves not unfurling? I have tried sunlight, artificial light, more nutrients, less nutrients… the plant keeps growing fast though, just leaving the leaves rolled up… Even cut it back to stumps and it regrew itself 🤔 My next try will be attaching vines to a mosspole… but I dont really want it on a mosspole 😅

A little bit off-topic, when a leaf is dying is the plant still using it, or do we cut it off because it is draining the plant of energy???
@Houseplantygoodness2 ай бұрын
Great question! 🌿 Yes, a dying leaf might still be doing some work (like photosynthesis), but if it’s truly done, gently cutting it can help the plant focus its energy elsewhere! ✂️✨
