I think people ignore the stylistic matchups way too much, this is no disrespect to Khabib but how can we say with 100% certainty that he beats Oliveria? We never saw Khabib fight a guy with Charles' skillset, a guy that's elite on the feet, has the same type of aggression and pressure that Khabib had (with minor differences) as well as great grappling and some of if not the beat BJJ we've ever seen in the ufc. Khabib was dominant for sure but he did retire early and the fact of the matter is that will certainly hurt his legacy because there are some obvious question marks regarding his career as well as a lack of longevity compared to other legends.

Dustin and gaethje weren’t the ‘next hyped guy’ either, they were both decent opponents but they’ve also bottled every title shot they’ve had, Usman is in a situation where legitimate killers are on the come up, during khabibs reign lightweight wasn’t crazy stacked, there were a few good opponents and he was for sure the best for that short period of time but he would’ve been dethroned had he continued for another 3/4 years. He didn’t stick around long enough for people to really figure him out, he done amazing in his 11 ufc fights including his 3 title defences but he wasn’t against anyone who you could even consider a top 10 goat. Poirier 7 losses, mcgregor was far too famous and his peak had ended by then. Khabib was great and dominated but look who he dominated against, all these lightweights are beating each other, all it took was someone with unique style to dominate them and that’s what he did. If you’re talking p4p he would’ve had many problems in any other weight class imo! Lightweight had a lot of ‘big’ names but every single one of them was more beatable than any other weight class. There was your poiriers, gaethjes, mcgregors that he beat all who since haven’t done anything of great value in the division, no titles won between them… do you think if khabib went into a division with Usman, Colby, khamzat, Edwards etc. he’d achieve the same? Insane ju jitsu, he can strike.. takedown defence is good. Khabib couldn’t do to Charles on the floor what he did to other opponents.. poirier, gaethje, mcgregor, Al iaquinta, barboza, Michael Johnson, why? Because none of them were any where near as good on the floor. Charles is a different story. Khabib could beat him but it’s actually just unintelligent to say he “would win for sure”.

Olivera changed the entire lightweight the way he climbed up so quickly and dominated same fashion as Khabib did really shows how hungry he is. I think if khabib had done the max Holloway and (prime)Ferguson fight there would be no questioning him. If Olivera keeps dominating we will start looking at khabib a bit differently, knowing he can still fight.

I think khabib will always be more legendary but in a mythical kind of way especiallyto the average fan. However, if Charles can run through the division and literally beat everyone, then I feel like real fight fan will know that's what truly matters for someone's legacy. The problem with khabib is that his legacy will always be full of "what ifs" and assumptions where as Charles has a chance to be truly and undeniably the best of all time in his division. Beating Islam would be HUGE for Charles' legacy.

Tibua was a better wrestler than Charles and he was a lot stronger. Khabib also won 30-27 on all 3 cards. Charles would end up on bottom when fighting Khabib and if his past fights vs Felder ect are anything to go by with Khabibs top pressure hes probably staying there. Enough guys have come out and said that BJJ is ineffective off bottom if the guy on top is competent. Now maybe he can knock him out but considering some of the stuff Justin hit Khabib with i doubt it, dudes chin is made of granite.

it's not that khabib didn't lose a fight, he arguably didn't lose a single round. It's dominance like never seen before, not on paper but in the manner in which he won. Also, Connor being in the division meant Khabib's title shot was delayed, realistically Khabib would have beaten champs like Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar. There's certainly a lot riding on Islam vs Oliveira, but we would also have to consider what an Islam win would mean.

Sean Sherk was just as dominant until he met with a good grappler with elite BJJ. Khabib has three title defenses and can hardly strike. Khabib was kind of lucky with his opponents too. Conor. Dustin, Justin can be easily taken down and submitted. Oliveria did it to them. Conor is submitted by Nate. If Khabib fought Prime BJ Penn or Oliveria it is a completely different story. Chimaev was also super dominant until he step up to the next level with Burns with great BJJ.
