For over 25 years, South Park has been a staple of pop culture. With it's biting satire, and timeless characters, South Park has cemented it's self at the forefront of adult animation. Though fan favorite character Chef seemed to disappear without much notice. Why exactly did Chef leave South Park? And how did South Park creators handle the aftermath?

"We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us. We should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains." The eulogy for Chef was fairly apt and did not place blame on Isaac Hayes. I fully believe he knew and accepted that the show pokes fun at everything. Politics, religion, culture, tradition, races and sexualities were all subject to South Park's satiric whims. From the flag of the town showing a black man being lynched to Cartman leading people on a march while dressed as Hitler, there were many lines crossed that Isaac Hayes could've said was too far, but he remained. His departure was absolutely Scientology's doing and I won't be persuaded to believe otherwise.

There's actually more evidence that Hayes did not quit the show of his own volition. He made a statement, before "denouncing" the show, that he understood the point Matt and Trey were making with the episode. He didn't entirely agree with it, but he at least wasn't throwing a fit over it. It's a reasonable response, nobody enjoys having their beliefs attacked. After that, they released the canned response from Hayes' "team", and soon after Hayes, who had been having financial troubles for some time, returned to touring again, even though he had mostly retired from doing so. The reason was apparently financial, he needed money. Which makes sense, considering Scientology basically forced him to quit his main money-maker. It's really sad. So many people think Isaac Hayes is a hypocrite. He's not a hypocrite of Scientology, he's a victim of Scientology.
@StarOutlaw9

@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade Жыл бұрын
In all fairness, he probably should have seen it coming. Scientology is pretty divisive, and to expect that the show would have not gone after that one at some point when they were going after every other religion would have been rather naive. Also, he probably should have had money set aside for that situation, not to mention whatever royalties he was making should have been enough to not have to work again.
@joeymury458
@joeymury458 Жыл бұрын
@@SmallSpoonBrigade Hmm... hard to say. If most Scientologists were asked, they'd say that they are the least divisive religion on the planet, and that the policy of disconnection is not real. But they're also brainwashed by a cult, so they aren't really playing with a full deck. As for the money, I think he had serious money problems. I think his career was in the toilet at that point, and he may have pissed away his money. Sadly, even wildly successful artists can blow through a celebrity salary pretty quickly.

It's important to emphasise what a big deal South Park putting this secret story out there is. You need to reach level three to get this knowledge, which takes a huge amount of time, dedication and money. It's vital to their whole set up that the general public don't know about Xenu.

The most common misconception is that Isaac stormed out of South Park just for his religion getting mocked. In actuality the Scientology committee essentially blackmailed him by releasing a statement that he didn't agree to and made it look like it was his own decision. Same. The way South Park criticizes Scientology feels different in a way to other religions. For the most part when it comes to episodes about religion, the main takeaway Matt and Trey leave for the audience is along the lines of “religion can be ridiculous, but it’s important to people”. With Scientology though, South Park portrays it almost like a cult, which though it may be accurate in my personal opinion, it’s still a little jarring compared to their usual. And the chef episode was icing on the cake, since that was the episode I feel was the harshest South Park’s ever been on any religion.

Isaac Hayes the 3rd has cleared up all the false drama the Scientologist where trying to push against South Park to make it seem like chef hated South Park when that was never true.

It’s truly disappointing what happened in this situation. At least Matt and Trey do miss Isaac dearly even with Chef’s gruesome demise. Chef was one of the best supporting characters they had ever on the series & his songs always crack me up 😂

Chef was one of my favourite characters in South park. Sometimes the creators make a risk with the material they put in the show, but its all not meant to be taken seriously in their defence. By the way the episode is called 'the china probrem', not 'the china problem'

Chef´s death is, to me, the hardest and more gruesome death in all South Park. I still feel that this felt like a spit in the face for all Chef fans over a "message" of loosing a friend because of scientology. And yeah, I know the last message from Kile in the episode was heartbraking and sweet, but making this death as shocking as it was... I don´t know, this was the episode that divide me old SP to modern SP

3:07 Im gonna have to call BS on this argument, Mr. Hayes... Theres like a dozen eps prior to that ep which make fun of many other religions, but it wasnt until HIS religion got mocked that suddenly he is against any torm of jokes about religion and those are now intolerance and bigotry 9,9 Mr. Hayes, ya wanna explain exactly why you didnt feel a need to defend: christians as a whole, evangelical christians, faith healers, mormons, muslims, religious cults, catholics, and jews. Funny isnt it how its okay to be "intolerant and bigoted" towards those religions but not towards scientology... Like what, did Mr Hayes just not know about other religions existin and thus didnt catch that those eps were intolerant of religions?

I hope that Willie Bradley will receive recognition as the prototype for Chef. I used to work for Willie at a cafeteria at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Parker and Stone often came for lunch and to talk trash with Willie, who is a lovely man. Parker and Stone have confirmed in conversation with a mutual friend that Willie is the prototype.

when the episode first came out he told trey and matt that he didn't agree with some of the content, but understood because that's how the show operates then he has a massive stroke and 2 months later a scientology spokesperson quit for him. he didnt quit on his own and didn't have the mind function to do it and therefore scientology ruined his legacy. his son and the producers all knew something was up and that he didn't just get mad one day and leave the show. that's the facts of this but there's always going to be that one person who wants to argue the truth so. believe what you want. also, they're probably the reason he died because the cult doesnt believe in western medicine or something like that

Concept Idea: Season 27 episode 1: The New Chef After the chef for the school quits because of a bad workspace, the boys go the Chef's grave site to try and resurrect him. Once they meet someone who thinks they know what they're doing, they find out that there isn't a body in the casket. So the boys go to the Super Adventure Club to see if they know what happened after Chef's death, but maybe the boys will turn out just like Chef if they don't turn back.

Scientology is very cult-ish, I I’m not gonna defend it in any way. That much said, I kinda wish they never would’ve made the Tom Cruise Scientology episode solely because Hayes/Chef probably would not have left. There is no way Stone and Parker could’ve apologized for the episode, it would’ve alienated the standard they set of unapologetically making fun on every group’s ridiculousness.

the question i have is just how much longer was chef gonna continue to be used even if hayes didn't leave considering chef had almost no relevance in season 9 while he was only somewhat relevant in seasons 8 and 7. even before hayes exited over scientology, chef was practically nonexistent for quite a few seasons so you have to wonder if chef as a character was on his way out in general with hayes leaving merely providing matt and trey the excuse to kill him off

Getting offended by someone disparaging your religious beliefs is understandable, but it’s pretty annoying how people only realize how wrong it is once their religious beliefs are the butt of the joke. Pretty selfish and hypocritical of Hayes. Hence why I’ve been fan of South Park for ages. this was just a brilliantly meta way of addressing hypocrisy (as they always do).

Isaac Hayes getting upset that a satirical show told the true story about his religion, along with bringing to light how they often use legal means to silence criticism, is an entirely him issue. He was fine with a show that showed murderous children, cannibalism, sexual assault, torture, war crimes, and regularly mocked Christianity, but the second they criticized scientology it was too much? I'm glad he's gone if this is how he justifies himself.
