Why Chiefs' Harrison Butker’s commencement speech is under fire

In his commencement speech at Benedictine College over the weekend, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker railed against President Joe Biden, Pride month and IVF. He also spoke directly to the women in the audience, saying, “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” NBC’s Kaylee Hartung reports for TODAY.

If you look up Benedictine College you’ll see that it’s clearly a Catholic college. His personal views shared in his speech clearly align with the values of the college. Why would or should he lose his job over this? Most of the attendees had no issue with the speech, hence, his standing ovation. If others have an issue with the speech, that clearly is not the environment for you, but people are allowed to have varying opinions and values even if they aren’t liberal.

I was fortunate enough to be able to stay home with my 4 kids until the youngest were 3. However, I was forced into the workplace as many other moms were due to rising costs of living. My wife was a nurse for 6 years before our first daughter was born and she decided to quit. The goal was to save on childcare costs and have more family time. While I don't make a ton of money, there are some things money cannot buy. The priceless early years of your kids lives pass fast. You cannot get that time back. It's sad how willingly our society discards the value of a mother in the home. Butker is not saying women shouldn't have life skills or eventually return to work, he is saying that home maker is a real job, and not to be laughed at. If you think your 'job' is worth more, I encourage you to take a drive past a cemetery some time. How many of those people were truly so important at work that the company couldn't go on when they died..

I don’t know how people decide that because you have a specific viewpoint or you are fortunate enough to prioritizing a specific career path or family path, that somehow you’re taking something away from every other choice and every other path that can be taken. My oldest daughter attends school at this college, which is one of the most impressive schools I've ever seen...and I've been to, toured and thoroughly reviewed a LOT of schools. This was easily the greatest commencement speech I've ever seen and it was embraced by any/all in attendance, students and parents alike. If you have a problem with his message and the essence of the speech, you're likely what's wrong with the world today.
