The name for the great wall in chinese is 长城, which means long city. So the underground great wall (地下长城)means something closer to "the underground city"
@HenryLoenwind Жыл бұрын
But does the meaning of the words really influence what people picture in their minds when they think about the Great Wall? The German word for "peace" literally means "walled", and the word for "cemetery" means "walled courtyard", yet nobody would think about those meanings when using the words. (Yes, it is somewhat hilarious that "building a wall" and "making peace" are the same verb, just with a different directional prefix in German, considering Germany's history with walling off half the country.)
@David-vx4bj Жыл бұрын
This feels like a misreading: 城 in 长城 historically means the earth walls surrounding cities and states, more in line with the meaning of 城墙 (defensive wall, city wall). The currently more used meaning of “city” (in line with the meaning of 城市, city) derived from that as a later development in the language. The name 长城 first appeared in Records of the Great Historian, written when the character still commonly referred to walls. As such, both as an etymological matter and as a matter of current usage, 城 in 长城 is always understood as meaning “wall” instead of “city”.

I feel underground great wall is a grt name for their secret tunnel as one of the uses of the great wall was for speedier transport (primarily of messages using signal fire, but even troops cud be moved along the wall much faster than thru the mountain paths). Which is exactly what a secret tunnel thru the mountains and urban centers wud do. And then theres the obvious defensive implications as they intend the tunnels to be used to protect against attack ofc by putting a wall of earth between them and any attackers... Ergo, the secret secret secret tunnel is an underground great wall.

What I saw was almost unbelievable like something out of a James Bond film. The channels that we saw then were complete which completely debunks some of the statements made in this film which I regard as insulting Tosh. The tunnels were last with shops universities cinemas et cetera. I’m not saying that this is fake news it’s just that it’s content is Illinformed and therefore unreliable. The tunnel projects are called "Third Line (of defense) Construction," basically intended to be Mao's Alamo. Funny cuz when they started construction during the early 60s, China was expecting the Soviets, not the US to nuke us. It's quite similar to Albania's bunker frenzy, but a lot more complex. The tunnels were basically finished before the 60s ended, as millions of engineers and billions of RMBs were thrown into a rather senseless building spree. After the 80s, most further construction involves upgrading and modernizing the tunnels to allow trains and missile vehicles to drive in. Fun fact: bright orange signs are relatively common in Chinese residential districts, denoting public bomb shelters. The massive underground parking garages have huge blast doors, and can probably house tens of thousands during war time (gosh we sure do like to think about war). They say that beneath Beijing, the ground was completely hollowed out, but everything is more secretive in Beijing so who knows for sure?
