It's interesting that they put so much research into gymnast selection given how relatively ineffective China has been on vault and floor, and therefore in the all around competition. I wonder if they are basing that research on the old era of gymnastics, where super thin gymnasts were favored, as opposed to modern gymnastics which clearly favors strength and allows for a wider range of body types.

China hasn’t caught up with the new trend and coaches don’t know to do strength training and conditioning yet. So we just hold on to BB and UB, and give up vault completely.

Review the video apparently, you didn't get it. Some countries have different training systems. You forget that back in the stone age of women's gymnastics, fully adult women competed and their sport was also based in flexibility, fluidity and dance elements. They were not very athletic or acrobatic. Then, Olga Korbut came along & changed the sport with her acrobatics, Nadia pushed it even further then, the era of the teen gymnast dominated the sport. Now Simone has changed the sport introducing "power gymnastics" based upon strength, stamina & power evidenced by her tremendous amplitude & her twisting prowess. Simone has been very durable & dominant competing through 3 Olympic games.

I wondered why chinese gymnasts are so slender and young. And also more wobbly while executing their elements :D. Muscular gymnasts are more controlled in their movements. Thanks for explanation. I hate methods that wear down the athletes bodies and not focus on long term solutions and overall well being of athletes...

Simone Biles stepped down out of completion at the Tokyo Olympics to protect her safety as she had the twisties, which is a mental block that causes the mind and body to disconnect so a gymnast doesn't know where they are in the air. Competing with the twisties is very dangerous, since a gymnast who gets lost in the air could land on their head, or neck, leaving them paralyzed or worse. It makes me sad to think that a Chinese gymnast would not be allowed to step down, or would feel pressured to continue competing, even if they had the twisties, essentially risking their lives. I understand that they don't have that "luxury" to step down, even if they have something like the twisties. It just makes me sad the fact that they don't have that option. It shouldn't even be considered a "luxury" to have the choice to step down if an athlete needs to for their own safety. That should be a basic right for every athlete around the globe! It's so sad that so little care is given for the individual athletes, even to the point of enduring mental, emotional, and physical abuse. Also, it sounds like part of your point is that Simone Biles wouldn't be able to handle the same type of pressure on Chinese Olympic athletes... first of all, she did put up with a toxic training environment. The Karolys were very abusive, and she also endured sexual abuse by an Olympic doctor. Her experience with that is what led her to getting the twisties to begin with. And now here she is again, getting 4 medals at the Paris Olympics. But also, no one should have to put up with that mistreatment, not even Chinese athletes. That's so wrong.

Well done, this video is very informative and well-explained. I'm reminded of the notorious Russian coach in figure skating Eteri Tutberidze whose skaters have to deal with the infamous "Eteri Expiration Date" which is 17 years of age. Low weight, thin frame, and adolescent-size body proportions are required to survive her style of training. Past 17 years of age, her skaters' performance go down rapidly and could no longer compete at the level they used to when they were still in their early teens. Figure skating has now become a girl's sport but not necessarily for women. I'm happy that in women's gymnastics, Simone, Rebeca, and Suni are proving that full-grown women can still compete at the highest level in the sport.

1- China opts for a certain body type for their gymnasts because in the view of the Chinese gymnastics federation they think that thinner and smaller bodies are better for gymnastic (whether they are wrong or not, that is what screening is like, just as screening for the triple jump is about being tall) which is not a lie, small gymnasts have a greater advantage than taller ones and thinner bodies don't wear out their joints as quickly as heavy people and the lighter you are, the better you can do certain tricks (especially on bars and beams). Emphasizing that this was the standard and generic gymnastics body. Even if we compare Cheg Fei's body from 2008- Beijing with some gymnasts today, even though she was strong in the Vault, she still had a slender and non-muscular body, perhaps it's the Chinese biotype and genetics. 2- The factor of being young is also an advantage in gymnastics and in any other sport, it's not worth pretending that it's not the truth, the younger you are the better you are in most sports... Simone is fantastic but Simone is 1 in a million, she is the exception not the rule, of course Simone is young but for gymnastic the peak of a gymnastics career is in adolescence like 13-19, the further you go in gymnastics the more wear and tear on your joints and injuries they will have and subsequently the slower it will be recovery, the rule was always 16 years old now people seem surprised when they see a 16 year old gymnast, but I don't know why since that was the rule until then. And obviously, you don't see gymnastics going much further because younger talents are always emerging and end up surpassing the older ones, older gymnasts have the advantage of experience, of being able to withstand nerves better in big competitions, but a young girl will always go be better when it comes to the peak and capacity of the body, again Simone is the exception not the rule, Simone is fantastic and only in a long time will be there the same. And the other truth is that although Rebeca Andrade is phenomenal and amazing, Rebeca in the 2024 solo final in Paris would never have won against the younger Simone of 2016, it's the truth. 3- I don't know if it's true or not that gymnasts are chosen for beauty, but in general I haven't seen any Chinese gymnast whose level of beauty was in the category of a super model; sooner I see beautiful female athletes in pole vault and high jump. 4- Regarding abuse in Chinese gymnastics, I really believe that children are trained intensely for his age and his small capacity but I think that others also have their flaws, especially when it comes to sexual abuse. 5-We are all seeing how the USA is changing artistic gymnastics by focusing more on strength than on grace, and if the USA has won medals it is up to other countries to reinvent themselves to try to surpass them but I think the USA doesn't have to " criticizing" the physique of gymnasts with a younger appearance and body because, whether or not, this has always been the body for artistic gymnastics, whether in China, the USSR (Russia), Romania, etc... the USA is now the one that Coming with more muscular bodies than other countries, and maybe other countries also find that strange and that's okay, each country follows its ideology as long as it respects the athletes. 6- In my opinion, women's gymnastics is and has always been toxic, whether between gymnasts from the same country or between countries (now it's better) when compared to men's gymnastics, it's not just in China. The West has an extreme view of China, I'm not saying that they are Saints in China and I'm not going to deny the country's past when it comes to people's rights, but China is evolving as a country and it no longer treats gymnasts the way it did in the decade 80/90/2000 (in which the abuse was not only in China but also in the great powers to win medals such as the USA, USSR, Romania), the approach changed, the spirit of sacrifice and glory for the country does not have to be bad , it's the culture of the country, besides being individualistic they work to achieve things and give honor to the country, when they win and are good it's always unclear when it's the West everything is fine.

It's still like that in a lot of gyms and across a lot of sports, even in the US. People often accuse China/Russia of having these kinds of regimes, but in the US top pro basketball prospects are generally identified under 10, and the rankings start at age 6. The training camps these little kids are sent to are super intense. I went to school next to one of them, and I watched a grown man grab a kid by the face mask and push him down because he was late for practice. That's not even getting into other areas where this kind of training is common, ballet/dance schools can be insanely abusive, just look at what they were willing to broadcast on Dance Moms.

I had to deal with antiquated (dangerous) training, one summer, for American High School Football. Our coach had a motto, "Water makes you weak." We went through a whole summer of twice a day trainings, in 32+ celcius heat with high humidity, without water breaks. Amazingly, only one person passed out towards the end of summer training. This came from a former pro athlete. I can only imagine having to go through a decade plus of this persistant torture. I support my country, in the Olympics, but I support the athletes way more. If China beats us, I don't mind, because when I watched them falter, I knew life was about to get hard for them.

While the men still made 2 gold and 5 medals overall, though not winning the gold for the team competition, the women only got 2 silver medals. I don't think that this would be considered a success. Maybe they now go again for the youngest possible kids for the next olympics.

I just watched the "future Chinese Gymnastic Champion" video. Was this actually broadcast on chinese television? Is it generally accepted, that a 9 year old and a 5 year old live alone far away from their parents? The whole video was terrifying! Obviously it is fine with chinese culture that Tingtings parents put pressure on their daughter to push through the training and have success. European or american parents can often be the same. But if it was shown in a tv documentation like this, there would be a serious uproar against it in EU or USA.
