@@thearpox7873 Weird for who, then? Probably for you? For decades athletes have been representing countries other than their birth country in all kind of sports. And those countries seem to be quite happy when they get medals and win championships. An example - my country gave political asylum to an athlete who brought us a gold medal from Tokyo OG and a silver medal now. Should the athletes be representing a country were they don't live anymore and where they were sometimes being threatened just because it's their birth place? Now, that is for me even weirder. But of course, you may have your opinion and I can have mine, that's the beauty and the right we have for living is free countries ;)

Chen is in a world of pain, despite her right as an individual to compete and win. Maybe after a period of time of trial and punishment undoubtedly meted out to her by the corrupt and diabolical CCP, after this trial she may leave China and get a job on a Western country coaching Western table-tennis players for the Olympics. Where she will have a more satisfactory continued sports career with a satisfactory coaching wage that she could ever have in China.

Integrity in sport is important. If this happened in cricket, it would be considered matchfixing and all those involved would be banned from the sport. This would also happen in most sports, because people who gamble money on a fixed event would be demanding refunds. This entire affair stinks.

Thanks for sharing, it's hard for me as an American to comprehend the facilities not existing and people not having the disposable income to choose their hobbies and businesses not opening to provide those services. I'm so sorry they don't have freedom😢
@johnqpublic4012
@johnqpublic4012 2 ай бұрын
I don't know where you grew up here in the States, but there are a boatload of sports not readily accessible to most kids. Either the schools or local regions lack certain sports entirely, or the cost of access (facilities, gear, training, etc) is simply too high for most families to afford. It's just the way it is. Nothing to do with "freedom" unless you mean financial freedom. Lei is not entirely accurate. Gyms with decent equipment and pools can be found all over China. The vast majority of people simply cannot afford access. You're not going to see a family surviving on 1500 rmb (~$210 usd) per month dumping money into health club memberships. Any disposable income would go toward instrument lessons; math, science and English tutors; exam prep, etc. As far as elite athletes, how/where they train depends on their sport. We have multiple dedicated Olympic facilities around the U.S. Some athletes choose to train in their own locations with their own coaches, and others train at these facilities. I suspect the CCP takes it to the extreme and requires its athletes to train only under its watchful eye at approved facilities. [EDIT: I should mention that many of the previously mentioned health club chains, gyms and pools have closed in recent months due to the deteriorating economy in China. Many of the people I know who had annual memberships simply lost their money -- unrecoverable. The companies would close up shop--some literally overnight--and the owners would disappear with the money. Employees and members found out the next day when they showed up to locked (and sometimes emptied) facilities. That, or they went bankrupt due to over-expansion/over-supply. So, while there are still quite a few facilities available, they're not nearly as widespread as in recent years.]
@MrBlaxjax
@MrBlaxjax 2 ай бұрын
I think it’s the same story everywhere. But China is an odd country. Kids are in school all day (and practically all night) and sure there are compulsory exercises but on the whole access to sports facilities is limited and not least because most youngsters spend all their time studying. In western countries hobbies and sports are encouraged. I don’t mean that all sports are easily accessible but in my country typically kids will go swimming, play soccer and have access to some kind of gym at the very least. And if you show talent then ways and means will be found to draw out that talent. In China I believe that the athletic kids are sent off to boarding schools for intensive training aimed at one thing. It’s a fairly brutal system that really has nothing to do with developing the children. It’s all about the glory of China. Edit: sorry just watched the vid thru and this idea of the kids being placed into seclusion is highlighted.

This is one of Lei’s most insightful videos in ages, because it properly connects what we perceive with a credible hypothesis of how the CCP’s manipulate sports in China. Although she provides no references to back her hypothesis, the best hypothesis is one that is most explanatory of the facts, and Lei’s claims are well within what we know of Chinese society and what the CCP is capable of (i.e. is likely not wild guessing). Well done Lei, keep up the good work!

When the Chinese are caught doping it taints all of their country's sports programs. What pride is in that?

If you count how many total athletes won a gold medal for one country then it's not even close: basketball teams, soccer team.

This isn’t a sports-related comment, but I think Lei should consider using a larger version of Winnie the Pooh behind her. It’s a clever political statement-well done, Lei!

Both Chen and Sun represent excellence in their sport. China should be proud of both of them. I am sure the rest of the world congratulates and respects the skill of both.

In America too we see very little of most of the Olympics. But it’s for business reasons… NBC (or whoever) spending more time talking about background interviews and just covering a few US-popular events. Makes me feel like I missed the whole event every time.

Thanks a million for this analysis, I also reacted at the actions of Chinese crowd during that Table Tennis final and was glad Chen Meng won. It was very clear who the Chinese crowd wanted to win. That was not the Olympian spirit at all. Congratulations to Chen for for her resilience that great sportsmanship. History will be kind to her. You are also correct that the CCTV choose to show most sport events form this Paris Olympics, where the Chinese won and even when it was live they delayed it by 1 min.

There is way too much drama in sports. It is entertainment, nothing more. Win or lose it's all right. I like the Winnie the Pooh on the shelf. 😅

That's wild that the ladies basketball team didn't get to a Bronze Medal elimination game. I thought they'd be at least getting Bronze. Their center is a 7' 3" tall young lady who regularly scores, like, 20 a game.

When politicians gets too much power things go berserk. Many people don't understand If you have a person who's really strong and worked so hard persuading their ultimate dream that person is full of adrenalin, specially a sportsman, and even much more when someone is on doping. Putting a lid on the pot to avoid escaping the steam makes it force to explode. I am sure her adrenalin went even higher when everybody start boo her. That made her stronger because of the anger inside. She knew If she would have let win the other she needed to defend herself to other people for the rest of her life undermining her pride. I am sure her coach always keep repeating what she must do made the anger only worse and the booing was only the cherry on the cake to raise her adrenalin sky high.

Wang Liping won the inaugural 20km walk in Sydney in 2000. But she was not supposed to win. She was there to pace the Chinese favorite. In protest, the entire Chinese team withdrew from the event including from the stadium but did not tell her. When she won the gold, no one from her team was there to congratulate or hand her a flag. The Australians seeing her alone celebrated with her.

Many US Olympic athletes also hold-down full-time jobs because there's no government program to support them. And if their sport isn't popular, they don't get corporate support -- so they have to pay their own way to the Olympics and qualifying events.
