I'm a United fans and i grew up in a era of football where you could appreciate any ballers whatever the jersey he was wearing just because of the beauty of the game. I'm a big fans of Palmer and i don't care if he's a Chelsea player or City academy graduate, he's a maverick and football need player like him

The iniesta take is a howler tho iniesta played off the right wing in spain, he played as 8 and 10 he played even deeper towards the end of his career and people sleep on his ball recovery. he is a timeless baller who can play anywhere

United fan here, Palmer is an amazing talent. I haven't been following any Chelsea games but I knew he was the one that was scoring consistently for them. Even though he scored 2 penalties, you could see throughout the game that the kid is smart, he plays like a cheeky bastard and he's almost always making the right decisions trying to break United's defence. He just needs to work on his execution and timing. I'm excited to see him develop his game, creative players like him are fun to watch.

Your system IS your style of play. Your system DICTATES your style of play. The more flexible your system is, the more you need players who can produce positively in different parts of the playing field (or court). That’s why Phil Jackson’s version of Tex Winter’s Triangle Offense was so successful. Winter derived The Triangle for COLLEGE basketball players (he was a college coach). Because college players are of lesser quality players than pros, the Triangle allowed his teams flourish because the movement OFF THE BALL was always in motion, and MOST importantly, always ending TOWARD THE BASKET - which produced easier shots - closer to the basket - for college players. Phil Jackson, with not only pro players but 2 of THE top players in Jordan and Pippen, then Shaq and Kobe, did not have the constraint of getting “close” to the basket. Jackson made sure he had two players who presented different issues for opponents surrounded by players who complimented those 2. Steve Kerr, who “grew up” as a pro in The Triangle, became a championship-winning head coach because he took the Triangle to yet another level with the Warriors - because with more reliance on the 3-point shot, the court became even more open - which means more space for a defense to cover. Anyway, without going further, read The Triangle Offense, by Tex Winter if you REALLY want to understand the core of that system (I don’t think his videos or Jackson’s explaining the offense even exist any more). It’s a short book & easy to understand. Apply it to football and Pep & you’ll get his system, too… and why his way of employing his system works and why copy cats can’t get the same results (and why his players almost always look worse on other teams PLUS why Jack Grealish doesn’t flourish in Pep’s system (hint: the system DOES require a measure of intelligence AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, discipline! And for Grealish, it removes his inventiveness, his “street player”).✌🏾

I've lived long enough to see players like Zidane, Figo, Requilme, Ronaldinho, Guti and Cantona changing the game by themselves. Palmer is that throwback player of the past. Every fan blames Guardiola for ruining football but I never believed that. The other managers that tried to copy his style instead of creating their own are the ones that are ruining football. Conte, Mourinho and Klopp won the Premier League and La Liga with Guardiola managing City and Barcelona respectively while using their own style. Hell Ancelotti destroyed Pep in 2014 Champions League semi final using his own style. Arteta is a cheap imitation of Pep and he wonders why he failed to win the Premier League title last season. Players like Grealish would thrive under Ole, Ancelotti and Pochettino but suffers under Guardiola because Grealish is required to fit the system Pep deploys. No shocker Toure, Eto'o and Zlatan hated Pep for that because they are game changers and Pep hates game changing players. Sterling at City looked like a good player but the moment he left he's hopeless. Cole Palmer is Chelsea's best player by a mile. Without him Chelsea would be fighting relegation by now.

For me, the first set of options for England midfield should be: Palmer, Foden, Maddison, Mainoo, Grealish, maybe rice. As a city fan, Its a bit tricky with Foden on whether he is a 8 or 10 since ive seen some games where he has that pass to unlock the door but in other games where his link up play and ball carrying ability has allowed the team to have better chances in the final 3rd. For me, i don't really mind where plays in midfield just don't put him on the wing anymore It limits his abilities.

I would take rice because i want some muscle in the midfield but i pretty much agree with your choices

Cole Palmer seems to play with that silky freedom that not many players have. I think being at City was holding him back. At Chelsea he the freedom to just play because poch isn't that type of manager that has a regimented system . Which is bad when ypu don't have the right players. When you have a system that works ypu ca. Have players that aren't that good. Without a system players have to shine on their own.
