Hello! I'm certain your very busy, but I would have to at least ask if you are able to review my supplementals? I'm having trouble with the "community contribution" prompt. I don't know which single leadership role that I've held to emphasize. I currently have written about how the titles of positions I've held are less significant to me than the activism and accomplishments I'm able to attain through all the opportunities I've been offered. It concludes by explaining that though there are many things I'm interested in at Columbia and would take advantage of, my most tireless contribution to the university would be consistent determination and encouragement to everyone around me. When I summarize it here, it sounds pretty lame. I know there isn't much time left, but I feel that I may need to rewrite it entirely. Would you possibly have any feedback? For the 'why major' essay should I mention all three choices or just my top choice? I am thinking about double majoring and either a minor or something. I have a story of why specifically neuroscience and how I took the initiative in that neuroscience club, but I'm having difficulty connecting it to my interest in human rights and public health.

You don’t have to mention all three. If it’s hard to make a connection I would save the others for another prompt. Like in this one perhaps Columbia students take an active role in improving their community, whether in their residence hall, classes, or throughout New York City. Their actions, small or large, work to positively impact the lives of others. Share one contribution that you have made to your family, school, friend group, or another community that surrounds you. (200 words)

Hi Jasmine. Awesome. Glad it was helpful!! I would do like a MLA light. so something like "title of article" title of book (year) common app is tricky sometimes it lets you italicize other times not...if you can italicize the title of the book great if not try to underline it.

HI, thanks for watching. The PS should structurally be different for a graduate program - just FYI. In the book list one book won't make a huge difference. So you can put in Harry Potter...what you want to make sure is that you have a nice balance of adult, more intellectual, cerebral texts along with YA fiction and maybe perhaps non fiction too. Not exactly - since the General Studies is much longer you want to combine the content...a lot of you, who you are, your experience in the discipline you are going to pursue through GS, your ambitions/ or what you want to learn within that subject...then transition into why GC at Columbia...not just why Columbia in general...but do within and beyond the classroom info. good luck!

@@howlingmedia4354 since it is longer the sections may be longer...I would consider a creative / story like beginning of you doing something related to the field you are applying into...then paragraph 2 directly discussing your connections/ ambitions within the field...then a couple paragraphs on what you have done thus far and then 1-2 paragraphs on why GS...does that sound like the structure you are thinking about

HI Kamila! You first want to think about what you want to say about your life...do you want to go chronologically? are there key moments that stand out that feel like foundational experiences? then describe them in images, as if you are watching a movie of your life...you want to bring in descriptive narrative throughout...not the entire way but some storytelling...then see if there is a unifying theme or a lesson that connects most of the experiences. hope this helps! good luck!!

Hi Pablo, this is a great question. After reviewing stats and feedback on ED 1, I think it is helpful if you have extenuating circumstances you can share but I don't think it'll be so dramatic of an influence. So if you had a parent lose a job, or health issues due to covid I would write it...but I would avoid writing a paragraph on how you had to move to online learning since that is typical across the board. So I can't really tell you what to get involved in because I don't know your interests, but what I can tell you is that ideally you find something you truly connect with, that means something to you so when you write about it, it's 'authentic' and shows your personal and social connection to the cause. I don't but I keep getting asked about that so it may be coming for next season. That may not work for you though if you are asking about it now. The fundamental difference is that since most times departments/ professors in your chosen degree on an admissions committee will be reading your essay you want to do less why the school and more why the program. Also perhaps start with how you have engaged in the field already...perhaps in classes but also a projects beyond the classroom in undergrad. If you share your prompt maybe I can give you a couple more tips.

@@albertohuerta so I would say personal like 20-25%, professional exp that factor into your decision to pursue the MBA (and aspirational plans for future) 35-40% then why MBA at Columbia the rest...here you write about the specific courses, profs, resources, opportunities that make this program unique for you. Ideally you can start with a personal story that combines personality traits with business in some way.

Hey there, I had a last minute question on the 4th question where it asks to list movies, albums, shows...etc. that you enjoyed most during secondary/high school. Does this mean we can't list any movies that we watched outside of academic courses like the 2nd question? For example, films like Crazy Rich Asians or Parasite are some of my all-time favorites films that have influenced the stories I want to tell and direct (I want to major in film production/cinema studies). Since I watched these movies in my own free-time, do these not fulfil the requirements of the 4th question? Thanks.

Although I hear you, that would be my instinct, I would stick closely to the letter of the prompt and just list...if a supplement says list and describe then you can say a little more...not for these though. I wouldn’t do that. You could mention a couple subjects you are interested in and how you’d pursue them but one of them should me the major you put in your app. Just my opinion though. I like for student apps to have a sense of synergy throughout
