When you really analyze our current consumerist system, you realize it is a really toxic system that can make you miserable. In this video, I focus on the pillars in which this consumerist system stands on, rather than the materialistic side.
"5 Reasons Consumerism Is Making You Miserable."
1. Too Much “Free” Can Cost You Your Free Will
Since the rise of social media, there has been this big change in the economic system where it seems like, "Everything is free." We are given all of these different tools at no cost, but these companies are some of the wealthiest companies in the history of the world. The big difference is now instead of paying for a service ourselves, it is paid for by a third party.
It is important to question these new business models that focus a lot on manipulation and ask yourself, "What are the non monetary costs that I am paying for this free service?"
Seeking too many free services, instead of directly paying for them yourself could be costing you more than you think.
2. Measuring “Success” By Money and Possessions Leaves You Empty
In our consumerist society, we often measure success by money and material possessions. We view successful people as people in mansions with a bunch of cars and money; however, I believe that measuring your success off of this can leave you feeling empty. There is nothing necessarily wrong with wanting those things, but this is a false image of success. I believe that success is who you become and all the lessons you learn along the way. This builds your character and gives you more satisfaction than this materialistic image of success.
3. We’re Using Money Against Us Instead Of For Us
A big message of my channel is not about being extremely cheap and saving all of your money, but simply, "Being intentional with your money." Money is an incredible tool that can allow you to do some amazing things in life; however, instead of using money as a tool to improve our lives, we are using money against us. We are spending money carelessly, which keeps us making money. Instead of spending money on a bunch of things that don't provide value in our lives, it is important to be intentional and use money as a tool to improve your life.
4. We’re Selling Our Soul For Growth
A huge component of consumerism is this never ending quest for growth whether that is personally or by a business. I do not believe that there is anything wrong with growing profits or professionally; however, I do see a problem when it is growth at all costs. As a society, we often seek growth at a very toxic level that can cost us our souls. Instead, we should seek a more sustainable level of growth that benefits the greater good.
5. We Have Never Established Enough
Another big message of my channel is establishing enough in your life instead of constantly seeking more. The word for this is "Contentment," which means, "Being satisfied with present conditions." A life constantly seeking more is not a life of contentment. There is no one size fits all definition of enough, but it is important to actively seek enough in your life.
