Hi Antonia, thanks for the great video. Lately, I had a big doubt hence stumbled upon your video. One Ophthalmologist prescribed me -0.5 for glasses (he tried if I could get -0.25 for glasses but didn't work), and when I said I'm considering lens, without any further testing he changed the prescription to -0.25 for contact lens. Another Opthalmologist I consulted said that the doctor misguided you and the power should be same for both glasses and contact lens. I understand the concept of distance hence I was convinced with the former doctor. But since the power is mild, should I go with 0.25D lens or 0.5D?

Man, you just saved me $125 dollars! I just got my eyeglass prescription in November and I was just about to schedule a fitting for my contacts. My power is OD -2.25 and OS -2.00. If I have a lot of computer or detail work to perform, I greatly prefer using my contacts. I know for many people it's the opposite, but I'm not alone in this, hence my comment that a person's situation should be considered when choosing a method of vision correction.

Although the CYLs may be the same, the SPHs are quite different and so you shouldn’t be using the same prescription for the two eyes 😄

Really depends on both the glasses and contact lens prescriptions!

Usually the Rx for contacts is lower on the sphere than the eyeglass RX b/c of how much closer it is when on the cornea. Maybe the BC and a .25 bump in the corresponding eye may be better. The only way is to be able to try different combinations. I wouldn’t trust any Rx from a lab when you don’t feel it’s natural after giving it some time. Also, just fyi - you can have the exact Rx from on different brands of contacts and perceive a slightly different visual experience (if you’re as sensitive as me in perception).

Yes u always start with the same axis. Your lenses can turn to a different axis when the lenses comes in to the eyes. So if u feel like u can't see good with your lenses, contact an optometrist then we can see if the lenses are sitting on the 175 axis or not.

You can use contacts but you’ll most likely need to use Toric ones (made a video on this as well), and because your prescription is less than -4.00 you won’t need to convert the vertex distance calculation like I did here! 😀

I know this is a late reply to your comment, but maybe it will still help. Lol. This chart is based on a "vertex distance" (the distance from the eyeball to the eyeglasses lens) of 11.5 mm. The middle column is the "sphere" prescription of the eyeglasses. It is written in a positive form or absolute power as prescriptions can be in negative or positive. If your eyeglasses prescription is negative, you look to the left beside the "sphere" column for your contact lens power; if your eyeglasses prescription is positive, then you look to the right beside the "sphere" column. Example: my eyeglasses prescription for my left eye is -7.75, so I look at the "sphere" for 7.75 and since it is negative, I look to the left of the "sphere" to get my contact lens prescription, so it would be -7.12. The contact lens prescription would be rounded to the nearest 0.25 increment, so I would use -7.00. Hope this helped!

I would recommend getting a fresh eye test as that will take into account any minor astigmatism you may have, which is not shown in the contact lens prescription!

most eye doctors do not have you wearing 2 different strengths in contacts when they are that close...they will prescribe a -4.00 in both eyes as the brain compensates the difference.

Thanks for the great video. I was recently fitted for contact lenses and have had a trial for a week now. I am a long time eyeglass user (-3.75/-3.50) with slight astigmatism. I tried different brands of contacts in the office and came to immediately notice the magnified world. At first I also though this was b/c of going from glasses to contacts, but after a couple of days wearing them and making observations between familiar objects with my own eyes from a set distance and then with the contacts on, the slight magnification is still bothering me I have to say. People's faces look wider and "fuller" and feet suddenly appear larger - something that I don't perceive without the contacts. Is there something I can try with other contact brands with my prescription that will maybe lessen this effect (effectively making perspective much closer to "neutral") or asking what aspect of a lens can be adjusted to bring me closer to seeing clearly without this magnification effect?

If anything the view you get from contact lenses will be the most natural. Minus prescriptions in glasses tend to make things appear smaller. Hope that clears things up 👍

@@AntonioTheOptom I thought so as well, but I did experiment quite a bit and compared things 3-5 feet away without any lenses and then with contacts. If my minus glasses give say a .95x perspective (just as an example), I feel that the contact give a 1.03x magnification - less of an effect but something I can still perceive. I can see this difference readily even by looking at a hand or foot within 18-24inches away. Just looks a bit off proportion wise to my non- lensed vision. I even try and squint with my eyes but it’s the same sensation.

@Leopard King I’m on the border with my right eye of having to get a Toric lens b/c I’m closer to -1 in astig. I’ve tried just spherical (no toric) and a slightly lower sphere (with the minimum -0.75 toric) and the toric option resolved better. However, it is not as fine of an adjustment as lenses for glasses so it may not be as “perfect” as what you think the corrected natural vision should be.

The same is happening with me. I first noticed the size of my shoes, they look alot bigger when i am wearing contacts than with eyeglasses. I am -2.50/-2.25 (Eyeglasses). My contacts are both -2.25 though, I wonder if that's the reason of magnification and i should try the eyeglasses prescription.

@@hannanafzalalvi8456 What is not mentioned here is what's called "vertex distance" and how it combines with your Rx. A see a lot of people wear glasses differently, some more down the nose and some right up to the eye. A 1mm difference is actually a lot with a decent Rx in perception. If a person gets used to wearing those specs more than 7mm from the cornea then the perception of magnification when switching to contacts will be all the more noticeable. That said, I still say that at least the combination of contacts that I tried, objects appear slightly "larger and wider." This can also be attributed to the fact that minus glass lenses have an inherent barrel distortion however slight, while a contact lens should not introduce any real curvature effect. So this difference can also be noticed when switching. Also, the quality of material and frame type/curve influences how lenses are fitted to your particular frame and does have an overall affect on the perceived image that you would normally get used to.

For the right eye a -1.50 seems appropriate, but due to the left eye having some astigmatism I would consult your optometrist to see if -1.50 would also be appropriate or you may have to use a toric contact lens design!

For cylinder values below -0.75 lens manufacturers don’t make toric lenses, so we compensate by ‘averaging’ the sphere and cylinder to create what is known as the spherical equivalent power

Hey Carlos! It appears you are experiencing some chromatic aberration. This is when the wavelengths (or colours) refract at different strengths (blue bends more strongly than orange) and therefore you will see small bands of yellow and blue. This happens more when you: 1. Use a higher refractive index for your glasses lenses (but sometimes you just have to use a high index if your prescription is too high) 2. Your pupil size is too wide (I often experience this when I dilate my pupils using a mydriatic). Unfortunately in terms of pupil size there’s not much you can do but for the glasses I believe contact lenses should help minimise chromatic aberration. Give it a go!

Hi, I need some help! I just got my contact lenses two days ago and they've been bugging me a little. The optometrist prescribed my contacts the same as my glasses which is SPH CYL AXS R: -2.25 -0.75 180 L: -1.75 -0.75 180 However for the AXS of my glasses I've got R: 169 L: 4 Like I said, I've just had them for a couple of days but I feel like I don't see as well with the contacts as I do with my glasses. It's not that I've got blurry vision, it just seems that everything is kind of out of focus and that even when reading, I can't focus on the letters as well. I've been considering placing an order online but by a different brand, since these ones make my eyes dry. I could really use some advice!

hi, i still can’t understand why people with cyl -0.50 reduce -0.25 to their contacts. ex: sph. -2.50 cyl. -0.50 then they’ll get either -2.50 (bc some says the cyl. is not a big deal) or a -2.25. is there an explanation to this? like, is reducing -0.25 important for the cyl? 🤔 thank you!

Most Toric contact lenses either correct -0.75, -1.25, -1.75 and -2.25 so in the case where you have -2.50 cyl: sometimes you can only use a -2.25 because nothing higher exists

@@donotforgetmenot the maths works out to be a little bit different if the cyl is -0.50. You will need to work out the spherical equivalent. (E.g. -4.00 sph -0.50 cyl) = -4.25. but because of the vertex distance you would use -4.00

Higher prescriptions like those should probably get checked by the optometrist in person because the variability can swing more as your prescription increases, I’m sorry I can’t give you a straight forward answer I believe it is in your best interest to get it checked in person

@@iamadamselindistress4969 that would ultimately depend on your age, because before the age of 25~27 your eyes still have room to worsen. Research has shown that under correcting myopia can accelerate it worsening so it’s always best to have an updated script just to make sure it doesn’t speed up! This is part of the reason why I don’t want to provide a simple straight forward answer because blindly estimating the prescription does run the risk of your eyes getting worse if you haven’t had it updated in a while

The Right eye should be fine with a -2.25 but looks like the left eye could benefit from using a Toric lens, best to see your optometrist for a fit for that one

@@king-sc9rs alg bro my suggestion is that because you have over -0.75 cyl it’s best if you went for a Toric prescription. Toric prescriptions usually require 3 values per eye (Sph, Cyl and Axis) cyl and axis will need to be refined by your optometrist 👍
