I just sharpened my F5 Reiff knife. I always sharpen my new knives with edge pro precision sharpener because I know knife company's sharpen their knives by hand on a belt grinder. Not the most precise method compared to precision knife sharpening systems. The steel was so hard I had to purchase an 80 grit diamond stone to establish a new edge. After 80 grit diamond stone then proceeded up to 800 grit stone. What an edge. Scary sharp. After watching video I now know how tuff it is. Thanks Dutch Bushcraft gents for showing me how tuff my knife is.
@greekveteran27153 ай бұрын
Well done! All new knives have to be sharpened before use, to remove the "burnt" steel those factory blets create on the edges. It takes at least 2 to 3 full sharpening sessions, for the edge to preforme as it was meant to. Both edge stability and edge retention can be improved a lot. A slight convexing will also add performance.

3v is just a staple at this point. 3v has made its name next to 1095, O1, A2, S35VN, and AEB-L. Still not my preferred steel for an actual survival blade but as a utility steel. It is one hell of a performer. I’ve been seeing more 3v blades showing up at my classes when teaching military students during their S.E.R.E courses. It’s a pain in the ass to sharpen in the field.

While 3V is a great steel - especially where toughness is required - let's take a second to remember that steel choice is only one aspect of the 'blade trifecta'. Good steel + good heat treat + good blade design = a good blade. For those new to the knife game - please don't get carried away by steel choice. However, In this case, the boys selected a great knife that meets the blade trifecta. Reiff know how to do 3V & how to do a field knife. You pay for it but in 10 years it will still be going strong. Sharp blades all.

maybe I'm a little out of the know, but why would you prefer 3v over 4v? or magnacut?

@@JayBirdTreks To put it simply; 3V, when properly treated(i.e., LT Wright or the Delta variant), is superior to both 4V and Magnacut… which are both amazing super-steels in their own right. I’ve used all three of these steels extensively. With the exception of stain resistance, 3V outperforms them is nearly every possible category.
@1mataleo13 ай бұрын
Agreed this has been my experience as well. I love 3V, especially my LT Wright 3V knives.
@ShoahBiz2 ай бұрын
@@longacre1041 Magnacut has slightly better edge retention tho u might not notice much in use. The edge will be less likely to ripple if it is ran thin. Magnacut has better fine edge stability as well by a decent bit. Magnacut is obviously much more corrosion resistant. 3v has toughness on magnacut but not enough to matter for most real applications. I'm not sure if it has changed, but LT Wright used to run a good many of their steels a little bit soft, 3v included. Hopefully that has changed. Magnacut makes a better edc or hunting knife and likely a better bushcrafting knife, tho they're pretty similar in that regard and you won't go wrong with either. if ultimate toughness matched with decent edge retention is what you're after, 3v may be the king. I don't mind giving up a little bit of toughness, that I don't feel I'll miss, for the other positive attributes of magnacut. Magnacut is also ran at a higher hardness than 3v, which I shouldn't have to explain the advantages of (contributes to some of the things i already mentioned)

I find 14c28n to be just as good if not better because it's more affordable. If companies actually did a Rockwell test we would have a better idea of what steels preform better. Testing one $300+ knife really tells us nothing especially if certain knife are sent for reviews. KZbin has turned into a commercial for certain expensive brands.
@niko_las3 ай бұрын
💯 14c28n is great steel for its price!
@greekveteran27153 ай бұрын
Rockwell says nothing about heat treatment or how the steel will perform. It's many other factors than steel itself. If you rely on hrc numbers, you're already judging knives wrong. 14c28n is both stainless and in the budget range of steels, so you're wrong there too,because CPM 3V is a PM tool steel.
@hanktheknife43523 ай бұрын
I‘m a huge fan of 14c28n, so easy to sharpen - but - also to dull. Loving my Laguiole it‘s in heavy use, not that often as the Barkies in CPM 3V, may be that‘s the reason. Or it’s the bladeshape. Or the knife. Or the heat treatment. Or the treatment by the owner. I would be interested in having two identical knives but one in 14c28n and the other in CPM 3V.
@richardhenry19693 ай бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 it does so. If you know the Rockwell it will give you something to compare to. Many steels preform better at different hardness. If I'm paying over $200 I want the Optimum performance. Not to mention a point can be a big difference yet knife companies give a scale 55-58 , 58-60. Some budget stainless becomes brittle above 55. Rockwell can tell you a lot.
@richardhenry19693 ай бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 I'm not wrong you just think you know more then you actually do. I didn't say anything about the steels being the same. But 14c28n is a more rounded steel With plenty of toughness. Really think you just like to try about pretend you know something.
