Crustaceans are the ancient ancestors of most bugs, like arachnids and insects. Scorpions and lobsters looking a lot alike as well as crabs heavily resembling spiders are not coincidences. Water type fleas, if memory serves, are land fleas evolving back into aquatic animals... like whales evolving from land dwellers into sea creatures. Evolution is not linear. It's a 3D flow. 1 million years from now, mammals may be all sea creatures save for tiny rodents and our intelligent life are land-dwelling squid beings because humanity made itself extinct. I know, that went kind of random. ;)

Unless the spinal cord in question is problematic...
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 3 жыл бұрын
Not all invertebrates are equal I mean since vertebrates are just one lineage of animals but arthropods are really held back by their method of molting for sure. Probably the most interesting solution is arachnids which have a cartilage endoskeleton though its a highly limited solution as they still have to molt their exoskeleton like all arthropods. Now as for ways around that if past forms from the fossil record are accounted for cephalopods might have had a decent shot as back in the Mesozoic they had been convergently evolving internalized shells many times adapting them for supporting muscle attachments and or buoyancy at least prior to whales making their internalized shells a liability. But yeah of animals solutions to this problem on land thus far bones are the best though they have their fair share of problems too

Minor clarification: Not all animals with chords have bones. Or to state it another way, not all chordates are vertebrates.
@theexchipmunk
@theexchipmunk 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dragrath1 Yeah, while they have their problems they have much more upsides. Like the capability to easily adapt your musculature, fat deposits and depending on it even internal organs (pregnancy). Thats definitely a huge advantage. Its also more robust. As contrarian as it may sound, if you think about it that really is the case. Bones have a thick pollster around them made from strong tissues like muscle and squishy stuff like fat. While an exoskeleton needs to take hits directly. Bones also can evolve completely towards one function, strength, as they do not need to contain any organs and musculature and basically the whole animal. They also should make feats of strength easier as musculature can be attached more efficient and with better leverage as again, its not limited by the size of the exoskeleton. It even heals better, as a bone is completely enclosed and thus protected if injured and has much more supply in nutrients and oxygen (and can fully be alive as it does not need a protective layer towards outside. And the obvious one, bones can be continuously grown, exoskeletons need to be moulted.

Insects evolved from the early crabs.
@theexchipmunk
@theexchipmunk 3 жыл бұрын
Let me introduce you to an even more unnerving idea. You know why Insekts only get so large? Because their breathing apparatus is passive so it can only take so much oxygen and if they increase in size the square cube law gets them. But crabs with lungs? Those breathe actively. Making that problem a non factor. And getting past that pressure skeleton problem is not as hard as rebuilding the whole breathing apparatus. So there is the possibility for absolutely gigantic land crabs to evolve at some point.

I once found a shrimp in the middle of the country, in the mud on the lap of a ridge. But most astonishing, I've found a sea croach (Ligia exotica, or may be a Scutigeromorpha) in an abandoned building in downtown of the city of Montevideo. A 4 cm long, very delicate animal, if touched, would lose their legs and break apart.

Oh my goodness, this was so interesting! I love the deep dive into convergent evolution and physiological comparisons of polyphyletic groups! This is something I actually thought about once upon a time. So what about terrestrial slugs/snails? Terrestrialization had to have happened at least twice when comparing the Partulid family in the pacific islands and mainland "Pulmonata" right?
