I agree with most of what you say, but you lost me when you said photography is about capturing the beauty of the mundane. We can certainly do that, and great pictures have been created that way, but it is not what photography is about. Focusing exclusively on the mundane is itself a trap. The past six years or so, I have taken my share of pictures of mundane subjects, ordinary people, flowers, sunsets, the moon, cityscapes, architecture, bears and lions, but if I had done that exclusively, I would have been bored out of my skull. I have also made pictures of immortals fighting it out Higlander style, demons, dinosaurs and monsters, a woman and her sabertooth tiger... to do this, I have had to learn how to shoot in a studio, build 3D scenes, combine photography and 3D, Film Noir cinematography... I have studied Fantasy art and comics, built relationships with people I can work with, and it has been incredibly rewarding. I've created pictures that make the people who work with me happy, and that make me happy. Sadly, I know very few photographers who do anything like that. William Mortensen did, in the 1930's to 1950's. Joe McNally constructs practical scenes and uses them to tell dramatic stories. Nowadays, the tools and technical skills are fairly easy to come by, so what it comes down to is imagination and storytelling. I think more people would try the more advanced aspects of photography, where you combine it wit other arts, if we talked more about it.
