As some one that had a high mileage Chevy 6.5TD.(for 6 years, bought it with 260k sold it with 310k). The 12V will probably be your best friend for the lifestyle you have! Especially when it comes to parts.

Sounds like a good straight forward plan! I've always thought it was easier to have six inline cylinders running. Then throwing 4 from side to side.

Sounds great! Liked hearing the history on the old truck.

I would look for the P pumped 12 valve. I have both styles and by far the P pump is better. Easy to work on and simple. The VE pumps love leaking fuel. The P pump will eat garbage fuel for breakfast and be fine

I’ve ran plenty of crappy fuel through VE pumps. I’ve owned about 10 first gens now(all work or play trucks) and never had issues with leaks or serious problems. Reliability wise they are better than a p pump truck. Power wise p pump is far easier to make power and hold power( had a scratch built 2008 ford with a dyno sheet of 970hp) and it held well. Really depends on whether you wanna reliability and great fuel economy or whether you want great power and reliability with less fuel economy. Personally from a bus I was perspective I prefer the VE just as reliable, less parts, easier to maintain, better fuel economy. all of them are great just depends on the future goal

I just want to see people put 2 stroke detriots in cars and pickups a 72 series or a 92 series if someone can shoe horn one into something

Well a 12v is better if you have the money and want to make power 300 hp is nothing for a 12v for an idi 300 hp is like the absolute max if you want anything remotely reliable

Well good luck. It's an expensive swap to do, know several who have done it. If you'd stud a 7.3, you'd have something decent, with much less work and money than a Cummins swap... I think you at least ought to stick with one 7.3 truck, especially since you already have one machined. The 12V is a better motor, but I don't know that you completely understand what it's gonna take to do the swap right. Parts can still go bad on a Cummins, you've been having a bit of a hard time with injection pumps, that can happen with a 12V too. The Cummins are not anywhere near as forgiving as an IDI about bad injectors, that can eat a piston FAST on a 12V, not as dangerous with an IDI Good glow plugs make a 7.3 start fine, but the Cummins will start better, yes. If you turbo a 7.3, or especially a 6.9, stud it first. Seems to me like these old IDI trucks are making a bit of a comeback here recently, obviously not as followed as a 12V or a PowerStroke, but they are making a comeback nonetheless... Have you been around a turbo'd 7.3? They will outpull a stock 12V, but turn up the fuel on the Cummins and it will be ahead once again. VE pump will start better, but won't really make any more power than a stock 7.3 IDI... unless turned up... P pump can make way more power, and really they do stock. Run an intercooler on your Cummins. Ignore this at your own risk. Good idea on a turbo'd 7.3 too, but not as imperative as on a Cummins. Tilt columns are frustrating when they don't work, but are nice when they do.

which works better with alt. fuels? 7.3 has a good reputation for that... Not sure about the Cummins 12v

Definitely the 7.3. 12 valves aren't as good as people say they are
