Need also to add to the cycling event issues when considering the huge disruption to traffic caused by road closures forcing vehicles to find longer, alternative routes. They need to restrict events to velodromes.

Where exactly was the "great insight" in this piece? At no point did he explain how cycling is less environmentally friendly than F1. He alluded to the lack of analysis, but that doesn't prove the point. There is nothing environmentally friendly about bio-fuels or e-fuels. Bio fuels are an absolute nightmare when it comes to water usage, soil acidification, and still have an enormous carbon output. E-fuels are a pipe dream at best. There is no carbon capture technology that can remove CO2 from the atmosphere at rates that would allow large scale production of e-fuels, just as there is not enough hydrogen from renewables - over 90% of hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels. Even at its best, e-fuel powered cars still emit the same amount of carbon from their tailpipes as regular petroleum derived fuels. An F1 event burns through more rubber in one practice session than cycling would in a year of competition. They crisscross the globe numerous times - three separate trips to North America, two separate trips to the middle east/far east - each team packing more equipment and people than an entire cycling series. Each team has a factory, an engineering staff the size of NASA and use as much computing power as Google (exaggerations, but you get the point).

Interesting conversation but wrong focus - sports are in the public eye but let's use the extreme example of banning something like F1 or cycling will have 0% impact on global emissions. Instead focus on sustainable options for cargo ships, freight trains, transport trucks, airplanes etc. BIOFUELS shouldn't be used as an option, arable land is an extremely important resource that should only be used for feeding a growing global population. Introducing them on a global scale will present a cascade of associated issues.
