After his ill-fated relationship with Bethany, the younger sister of his 4th mistress, Barba Bracken - Aegon indulged himself for a time, with common whores- but later the same year, the Lothstons briefly returned to Court, when Lord Lothston was made Hand, to replace the executed Lord Bracken - it was said (though never proved) that he 'enjoyed mother & daughter in the same bed.' But after Lady Jeyne was given a pox, that the king had caught from a whore- the family was sent from Court once more.

It is not as unrealistic as you think. Children go through a period where they see their parent as the ideal partner. Never heard of little girls going "I'm gonna marry you, daddy" or boys suddenly seeing their father as rival for their mother? This is a _normal_ step in development of their mind, just like the rebellious phase later. Thing is, this phase where kids want to be romantically with their parent comes and goes. But if you are physically removed from your parent before that phase can naturally end it can develop into an Ödipus complex, which seems what is going on in Daemon's head. That aside, total MILF alert.

When she said 'my favorite son,' Daemon clearly was surprised, and later we found out that his mother died when he was very little, so he did not know his mother's face, did not know who that really was, and the oyster thing was BEFORE she says those words, so not a big problem there (to him). Btw the entire sequence was shot and edited to look quite surreal, that this was an illusion, so there's no need to discuss whether events like this had happened or not. As to those words his mother said to him, she wasn't the one saying them. It was really a mirrored reflection of what Daemon thinks of himself.

For those who are interested in Daemon's mother,, here a few facts from the books: Alyssa Targaryen was a wild child but when she grew older, she turned into one of the least attractive members of house Targaryen. She had two mismatched eyes, a crooked nose, a lobsided smile and her hair was of a dirty yellow and not of the beautiful silvery gold that most members of house Targaryen tend to have. However, she and her brother Baelon, fell in love with each other and later married and they were pretty happy together. Alyssa took both of her sons on her dragon Meleys shortly after birth and seemed to have been a very kind-hearted person. Sadly, she died in childbirth after her third pregnancy, the child dying soon after. Viserys was about 5 or 6, Daemon about 3 years old at that time. Baelon was heartbroken and even though his rather beautiful and ambitious younger sister Viserra tried to seduce him to become his new queen, Baelon refused her and did not marry again.

Thanks for talking about this blunder with some calmness and sanity. Daemon lost his mother at a very young age (2-3 years old), and she died rather suddenly in childbirth. Losing a parent like this would be traumatic at any age, but in this specific time its especially damaging, due to the ages 2 - 4 being the most crucial developemental stage in a childs mental developement. If something fucks them up at this age, it's going to stay with them forever. Even if they can't remember the exact traumatic event themselves. Plus, Daemon's father never remarried. Wich means that Daemon lacked any sense of maturnal love. Baelon was a decent father to him and Viserys, but not having a mother figure possibly explains a lot about Daemon's issues with emotional regulation, impulse control and openly showing affection. The fact that he more then likely can't even remember what she looked like, also makes me think that he didnt know who the woman in his dream was, until she called him son. He seems rather uncomfortable after that revalation. Also, now that you've pointed out how Alyssa seems to be in control of the entire interaction; I sure hope that this does not imply her doing something of that nature to him when he was a toddler. That wouldnt simply be charackter assassination at this point, it would be dropping a nuke on Alyssa's entire charackter in the book...

Dreams involving sex with a parent are usually nothing to do with sex but either connecting or being detached from one feminine self (for mother) to unaddressed physical or emotional abuse (usually by a parent pushing a child to take care of them inverting roles). I don’t think the dream was intended to reference actual sex at all but the emotional gap he has from losing his mother too young and putting his wife in the role of his mother instead of a partner…even punishing her for her mother leaving him so young, which wasn’t on her. In the show one of his daughters talked about how Rhaenys took Meleys. Meleys is the dragon that Daemon's and Visery's mom flew. Makes sense why Daemon would want Meleys, it was one of the fastest, if not the fastest dragon at the time. However, Meleys bowed her neck to Rhaenys. A red queen for a red queen. Makes me wonder if Daemon chose Caraxes as a way to get back at Rhaenys, as Caraxes is the dragon Rhaenys father rode. Caraxes and Meleys are both red beasts, that are also quick and vicious. Think about it, on Driftmark one of Daemon's daughters complained when Aemond took Vhagar, stating "She was mine to claim!" Children have somewhat always inherited their parents dragons. Maegor the Cruel took Balerion after Aegon the Conqueror died, and Aegon the Uncrowned (Aegon the Conqueror's grandson) chose Quicksilver after his dad, Aenys. Targarayen children want to inherit their parent's land, titles, and dragons (unless they were given one from birth), but they must feel cheated when incapable if doing so. Rhaenys should've been crowned after her father, but the crown moved to her uncle, and then her uncle's eldest son, Viserys, her cousin.

Generally but not always fathers are more strict on their son's and mothers on their daughters this is believed to usually occur because we see our children who share our gender as our successors which was the norm throughout history if your father was a leather tanner 90% of the time you would learn his trade and one day take his position same for mothers. This as a biproduct usually meant fathers showed more affection on their daughters and mothers their sons which meant that if a son lost his mother during the early stages of his life this often had a lot more of a detrimental effect on their development same for daughter if they lost their father early in life.

I think you were spot on about mother's hold over a child especially boys and the psychology of that.. I lost my mother at 13 and it was horrible,, affected me from 13 to 18 the most.. I had to fight so hard not to regress and go into my shell.. Also I couldn't protect her at the time and That's still sticks with me today at 25.. At 18 something clicked tho and I went 100% the opposite direction thanks to a strong dad who It is best to try and play both roles.. Now I'm a over tattooed MMA fighter trying to cause UN scheduled Nap times to my competition lol.. So maybe his mothering skills weren't the best but he tried and I understand he was hurting just as much as me.. And I have brothers and sisters as well which probably made that even more difficult.. My oldest sister was a great role model when femininity for me also. So yeah it definitely changes a man.. I think you said it better than I did though.. This is probably why I'm sometimes a little over protective of the women in my family..

I feel like you are taking this a bit too literally. In the last episode, the jealousy Daemon feels over his brother preferring Rhaenyra to him as heir was expressed in his dream by him literally chopping her head off. This is also an exaggerated portrayal of a deeper basic need: It seems pretty clear to me that Daemon has always felt fundamentally unloved. He does not trust anyone, he constantly rebels and is very disagreeable, but at the same time constantly seeks the approval of and idealizes his family, the people who are most "supposed" to love him unconditionally. Tender sexuality in particular is an expression of approval and love, and this is what his dream expresses with an idealized version of the person who was "supposed" to give it to him most, his mother.

Honestly there’s multiple essays you could write on just this one scene and what it means for Daemon’s character. I believe Daemon whole section of this episode is about showing us what Daemon really wants and this scene is a massive part of that. Daemon’s relationship with the concepts of family and sex is tumultuous to say the least. He clearly loves his family and wants to protect it from anything he perceives as a threat but it’s all mired in his own ego and need for validation. He wants his family to be strong because it makes him feel strong, because it validates the view he has of himself as above everyone else. And his view of sex is equally complicated, it’s simultaneously one of his favourite pass times (in no small part because of its taboo nature serving to help him defy the powers that be), a toll for him to control and exploit others, the thing that has taken more people from him than anything else and one of the very few times we’ve ever seen him be vulnerable. Viserys directly compared Daemon to Alyssa back in season 1 episode 4, and I think this hallucination of her represents the family Daemon truly wants. He loves Viserys and Rheanyra but he’s frustrated to see them cleave to the demands of lesser men, to see them become caged by the politics of people who he sees as beneath them. He longs for a partner like himself, like Alyssa. He doesn’t see himself having sex with Alyssa because he had an intimate relationship with her in the past, he sees it because she’s the only woman he’s heard of that can be everything he wants. And this might be reading into it a bit too much but notice how for the entire scene it’s Daemon servicing Alyssa, she doesn’t touch him intimately the way he touches her nor does he use her body for his own pleasure. Daemon doesn’t want or need to be in control, he wants someone to stand behind, someone to give him purpose and love. In the ultimate fantasy for Daemon, where he can have a sexual relationship that embodies the wild and fierce nature of both himself and his partner, that is firmly in the traditions of his people and defiant to the ways of other cultures. where he can be recognised and validated as the fist of his dynasty, where he can be truly vulnerable, he still chooses to be with someone who has an inherit power advantage over him and to server her for her own ends.

BTW, Alyssa Targaryen was a tomboy, strong rowdy woman that liked to fight and use the sword, she had mismatched eyes, violet and green. When both Viserys and Daemon were born she took them, as newborns, to fly with Meleys and she died during childbirth, that child was going to be named Aegon.

My theory on the Daemon dream sequences could his personal “ghosts” haunting him which stem from his rocky relationship with his family: 1. The first one shows his regret for being the reason behind slaughtering his great nephew (his brother’s grandson). 2. We see a Aemon and Daemon hybrid man which mostly symbolizes how similar the two of them are. Two 2nd born sons who most would say were more fit to be kings but due to the order of birth couldn’t ascend. 3. Him and young Renyra showed his hidden hatred towards his wife/niece since her severed said how he was angry that his brother loved her more. 4. Due to comments I learn that Daemon’s mom died when he was 3 and probably never knew her was why he didn’t original recognize her. All he knew was a Tarygaren woman who truly deeply loved him and he wants to return that love in the way he does best eg sex. But at the end when she states if only he was born first, her favorite son. And he sees blood on his hands makes you wonder if he blames himself for her death. Also forgot that he sees his previous wife in his waking moments, probably regretting their time together.

As a world building detail: Incest is NOT tolerated by Westerosi. Both the Old Gods religion or the religion of the Seven consider it an abomination. The tension was so high between the ruling Targaryen's incest and the religion of the Seven that a religious revolt began a series of wars between the Targaryen, nobles and smallfolk. It was under Jaehaerys and with the help of Septon Barth that they created the doctrine of Exceptionalism, that painted the Targaryen as close to divine beings that were exempt of the religious responsibilities, because... blood of dragon, silver hair, violet eyes and whatnot. George as always doing amazing world building.

Wanted to add a different coment regarding Dameon´s dragon. As people called out Alteori for it being a wyvern and not a "real" dragon. I was reading the book. Stopped at the part when the series started (since I want to be surprised and then go back at the book) and the novel makes the distinction that it IS a wyvern since those do exist in Westeros. That being said, at the end of the day is just a dragon. And the series (not this one nor Game of Thrones) ever established the difference. By the way, they can keep making series based on Westeros till the end of time. For instance, BLOOD AND FIRE (the book this series is based on) starts telling the story about half of the book. The first half tells many stories prior that end where House of the Dragon starts. And it is EXTREMELY interesting. I want to see it as series eventually. ...did you know that a Targaryen princess became a prostitute? Plus, they can even go prior to this book (when the world was first conquest) or after of course (what happened after GoT): tell the story of Jon or Arya...or bring back Daenerys. That with Drogon back somehow he finds a female dragon and the dragons come back. There´s this incredibly interesting place ( Valyria ) where at first it was like Atlantis (a spendid kingdom) and after became cursed and turned into a spooky place. So much so that the biggest dragon there ever was once flew there and he got attacked and injured by something no one knew. A creature bigger than the biggest of dragons. Or they can tell stories of the other books that take place on Westeros or create new stories. The possibilities are endless. Of course...not do so the Disney Star Wars style where they burnt the IP. Give the IP several years after the ending of an entry.

Life expectancy was only so low in the past because the number was skewed by the high mother, infant, and child mortality rate. Real life expectancy for an adult was much higher.

Yeah I know intra-familial dynamics are slightly Freudian, which is why wires get easily crossed and actual incest develops. However there seems to be more preference for the mother-son aspect of this phenomenon as seen in 🌽 and even in certain eastern religions in the form of ishtar and nimrod, the mother and son king and queen of heaven and even in Christianity with the virgin mary and Jesus. Rather than the father-daugther aspects which everyone seems to agree is disgusting.

Ahem ... while I agree that mother-son is popular, it pales in comparison to father-daughter in my experience. In Zoroastrianism, for example, a union between rulers was only blessed by the divine if the man married his daugter or sister or likewise, but in our times its mostly a kink for dads to fantasize about "daddy's girl" and vice versa.
