Why Daniel Ricciardo's Driving Style Isn't Working
Daniel Ricciardo has not had the greatest start to the 2024 season with some really bad races due to his driving style. So we take a look at what made him quick at red bull with max Verstappen and why this current Vcarb01 isn't performing to his liking. The visacashapprb team has a lot to work on and the struggles will only continue if they don't sort it out.

The 2014 RB was not Vettel's own car, but a whole new car for a whole new set of technical rules. Both Ricciardo and Vettel are kind of 1 trick ponys when it comes to being very and exceptionally fast, but in opposite ways. Vettel didn't get the planted rear to get his fast exits and the team wasn't helping him very much with that because Ricciardo faired quite well with the gripping front while there was no challenge to the mighty Mercedes anyway.
@F1Unchained

It was a car still built off of Vettels input from the past cars. It was new regs but it had to have some of Vettels preferences. It is true it didn’t have a planted rear and Ricciardo faired better but it was his first season there and very impressive

@@TheoF1 With the difference that Vettel was super good and Ricciardo just good. Maybe Vettel marked the beginning of an era in which it became more about a driver-car fit than just some drivers being faster with any car. A bit like there used to be drivers that were great in the wet and the majority was much slower in any car, while these days cars sometimes just don't work at all in the wet, also not for a usually very quick rain driver.

I don’t think Daniel is currently better than Yuki. He’s more seasoned yes but Yuki is driving that car and adapting to how bad it is better than Daniel is. Daniel being a veteran should be able to adapt but hasn’t. The same happened in McLaren. Yes the car isn’t his style but even if he gets that RBR seat that car is built towards Max and he won’t be able to do better than checo. He might actually do worse in all honesty. His time might be up or if a back marker team needs a solid veteran driver to help build a car he could be the right fit but I just don’t think he’s right for a top team anymore or midfield. I've done a very little bit of racing and I tend to agree with you, a driver is either going to like a planted front OR rear and capitalises on the strengths of each. My car understeered like you wouldn't believe if driven "normally" but once this was understood I realised I could toss it in hard and late, sitting it on the outside rear, tyre while maintaining entry speed without any fear of losing the rear. This suited me fine as I was never too concerned about understeer but questioned my ability to catch a high-speed rear end snap. Confidence is key.

No ones been to more teams than him in the last few years aside from maybe Alonso so you don't really have a fair comparison with other "Top drivers".. Alonso has been up against Ocon who Ricciardo destroyed at Renault and Stroll who anyone on the grid would beat as a team mate. I think Sainz is the only driver to prove he can adapt and succeed against difficult competition but even he is struggling against Leclerc. Most drivers suck when in a car that doesn't suit their style. The 'top drivers" in this era (Verstappen, Hamilton, Leclerc, Norris) are the ones who are lucky enough to be signed by a top team at the perfect time and have the car built around them.

So is it set up for Yuki’s style? I would guess everything should be for Daniel. Put Max and Sergio in their cars and see what they can set as a benchmark. And put Yuki and Daniel in the Red Bull car and see what they can do. I think that would be so productive.

I've been saying this about DR for at least 2 years! Dude has WAY too much to do on the steering wheel. Dude is slow in and out of the corners. If he could accelerate out of corners again he'd be up front instead of in the back. They need to build a car around DR and see what happens. Lets also acknowledge that the Alpha Tauri team needs faster car design as well.

instability into a corner can mean 2 different things, either the front is unstable, which casues understeer, or the rear is unstable, which causes oversteer, Max and Daniel both prefer oversteer, but Max can handle it a lot better than Daniel can, Daniel can't handle front instability Also, an understeery has to brake earlier, not later, since it lacks mid corner rotation, it has to sacrifice it's own entry speed to have a better exit utilizing it's rear end, Daniel's style in quali and race is not really about early or late braking, his braking is about the same as everybody, he only really got the reputation for late braking due to his glorious divebombs, where he would brake abnormally late, an oversteery car generally brakes later into the corner as it can carry more speed into and through the corner and has more rotation mid corner Daniel's core issue is just adaptability, he can't use the tools he's given, he has to make them adapt to him instead of the other way around
@SteveMcCarthy33
@SteveMcCarthy33 2 ай бұрын
A driver at that level should be able to drive a car competitively even with with understeer. I think what he may be doing is changing the setup to get the car to suit his style of driving, instead of changing his driving to suit the car.

Ever since Max became his team mate Daniel has not been able to beat his own team mate convincingly measured over an entire season. It is not that Daniel got worse as a driver, but the new talents are clearly faster and Daniel just can't keep up with them. Great job at articulating Daniels challenges. Let’s be honest, Yuki may have qualified well at Jeddah but during the race he dropped like a stone. Daniel’s race was comparable performance wise until his last lap spin. Losing two places during a pit stop in a car that is marginal at best is going to kill your race. Yuki is definitely better at brute forcing the car, in its current configuration, on a qualifying lap. Daniel absolutely needs to find a setup that enables him to drive to his natural style. Hopefully the engineering team can develop some mods that will assist to this end, during the season. It seems that the RB engineering team aren’t as rusted on to a car setup philosophy as McLaren. If Daniel grumbles loudly enough, maybe they’ll move toward his preferred setup.

I don't get the non-stop excuse making the DR fans make about his driving style not being compatible with his cars. He's driven more than half a dozen different cars under two sets of regulations made by three different constructors since leaving RBR and he's been dreadful in all of them. Part of being a good F1 driver is being able to adapt and maximize your car. If DR's issue really is his car isn't suited for his driving, that's damning to his competence as an F1 driver. He's an old dog now too so the chances of him suddenly becoming adaptable are slim. This should be his last season in F1.

I can see both Yuki and Ricciardo out in 25 replaced with Lawson and Perez. if Perez does decline as usual I see his seat going to sainz or Albon. Honestly, Ricciardo should have been out of F1 years ago. He has had his issues on every car for the last 4 to 5 seasons and if F1 is the pinnacle it should not be giving third chances because better drivers don't get one.

I've always thought there were better drivers then Daniel, right from when he was picked up to drive in F1. Like the majority of drivers, then and now, he got the seat because of sponsorships that gave him money to contribute to the team, and he also gave F1 some advertising power and home grown support in Australia, which use to be the 1st race of the season. And of course he wasn't a bad driver, but I always thought because of sponsors and the Australian connection he got a seat when others should/could have been given the seat. At the time the Australian GP was losing it's status in Australia with arguably V8 Super Cars being number 1, with F1 and Cart/Indy Car that was also running in Australia competing for number 2. Cart/Indy Car had Australian Will Power and a New Zealander in Scott Dixon competing, so there was a connection there for fans. Yes F1 was still a big event but it was getting stale and with no Australian driver in the field there was no one for the home crowd to fully get behind. I remember when Daniel was being considered and then picked up as a driver, he became the big advertising drive in Australia for F1 and the GP weekend. Hey good on him and anyone who gets to drive a F1 car in anger in a GP, but there are a few who have gotten seats in F1, then and now, who's seat should/could have gone to someone better, Daniel's seat was and still is one of those seats.

I don't think so, Dan has spoken about the balance of the car. He can live with understeer to an extent if the car is predictable. That's why he came good in the AT04 (and hardly any of the RB Car). It's well documented that the McLaren has quirks too, so I don't think we can conclusively say these cars don't suit him when we've only seen a McLaren and AT with the new regs. He clearly impressed in the RB19 in Silverstone, don't forget that. The issue in Saudi was to do with sensors and the ride height laser in the car. They didn't get his set up correct, and that exacerbated the issues with the car that both Yuki and Dan had, mainly to do with grip.
