We should point out livestock is responsible for some of the most devastating epidemics in human history. Measles, tuberculosis and smallpox jumped to humans from cows, the flu and whooping cough from pigs and ducks, and malaria from livestock birds. Currently, intensive livestock is causing new types of flus and many other new infectious diseases. We do have to become aware of our place in nature, and that also means becoming aware of what we eat and how we produce food.

Important note: SARS-COV-2 is not "fast mutating". As far as viruses go, it mutates pretty slow. It proofreads it's genome while replicating, which keeps the mutation rate low.
@nosuchthing8 Жыл бұрын
I think they mean it's rna based, not DNA based. So it has more errors when it duplicates.
@kevinhackbarth9617 Жыл бұрын
@@nosuchthing8 That's true, DNA viruses have lower mutation rates. Compared to influenza or HIV, for example, I believe SARS-COV-2 has a lower mutation rate. Mostly I wanted to point this out so that people do not think SARS-COV-2 is exceptionally fast at mutating/evolving. Of course, all viruses mutate fast compared to bacteria, animals, etc. so it's all about context.
@nosuchthing8 Жыл бұрын
@kevinhackbarth9617 covid is enabled based, hence it has a higher replication rate failure. COVID-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019,” is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Need to avoid all contact with genetically close-ish animals. From past viruses looks like only fish, reptiles, amphibians are safe? Would need to destroy the livestock industry and get rid majority of pets (non-aquatic). Then reduce cross-species virus hopping by preventing unnatural animal contact with each other (zoos, markets, farms). Be super careful with birds/mosquitoes? So in conclusion, its unrealistic to stop another pandemic. Luckily they seem to only appear every 10 years or so.

@@rikkenhelcate9868 We don't have to choose all or none. We do not need to eat animal products at all, but reducing the threat by eliminating beef and dairy would be a good place to start. Be vegan. So simple. Not 100% foolproof but between 60 - 70%.

False information, being vegan won't eliminate COVID-19, or make you safer in any way. Wearing masks and practising good hygiene can reduce the spread of COVID-19 however.

And here I am, sitting quietly, learning more about viruses - and then a rat with a pizza slice scoots across my screen while you’re talking about The Plaque.. I laughed so hard at something that’s so not funny and so long ago and yet so now.

Just to clarify a tiny side point - smallpox is the only HUMAN infectious disease we've completely eradicated. But we have also eradicated the cattle disease rinderpest.

I'm certainly not a doctor or epidemiologist, but I don't find it surprising that many human diseases started in other species. Viruses specialize in types of cells, and virtually all mammals have similar organs - heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes, etc. A human lung doesn't seem like it's that fundamentally different from a cow lung or a sloth lung. For a virus, evolving from specialist to generalist would be the way to go, the virus that has many, many targets will reproduce much more than a virus that has only a single target. Maybe I'm way off base, I have no PhD, but to me it seems only natural that diseases can jump between related species.

@Lost Hero I'm not saying veganism would end all zoonotic diseases, but it would certainly decrease the risks of these diseases spreading

I really liked the video, but unfortunately you missed the opportunity to talk about how the way we treat animals that we consume most (chicken, cows, pigs,...) makes the situation so much worse. I highly recommend "Eating Animals" by Jonathan Safra Foer, which digs deep into that topic. In short it says: Keeping animals in such close contact like it happens in meat mass production (especially in America) gives the viruses a lot more opportunities to mutate in a way that they can infect humans (again) and potentially even worse than the zoonotic diseases that we already know. This variable is actually in our control, meaning it is much easier to change animal farms than to keep people from flying across the globe.
