Here a semantic approach, etymology : we have the root بعض and when it's about "mosquito" it is related to a bite, but with the same root, we have the meaning of some, somewhat, some one, means a piece of something, so the bite doing this too. See etyma عض and verse 3.119 it is said وَإِذَا خَلَوْا عَضُّوا عَلَيْكُمُ الْأَنَامِلَ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ thus the meaning and comprenhension of بعض is about an extract of something. It seems that this verse is not about insect essentially, nor its size, but to take a representative part of anything, and then comes the following فَوْقَهَا the word Fwq is translated by "above" but it means an excess, means more, it's not about hight. At the end, the meaning of the verse says Allah can take anything, from a selected part of something and much more. Your translation in english doesn't reflect the arabic verse, it is not about the size, small nor tall.

About the death, verse 6.95 إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَالِقُ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَىٰ Indeed Allah split the seed and the pit. And this stage, death, comes the life. And Aadam (as) recieved a Breath, a Rooh from Allah. And a breath comes at a certain stage of development of the embryo in the Womb, and this is also how Jesus was born. In sha' Allah we will open the word and concept of Life and Death acording to semitic tradition and morphosemantic. Verse 39.42 the Sleep is considered as a little death, because while we are sleeping, our will is missing, like the coma. No more will when dead, no possibility even to repent.
