The way that the arbiters in the show felt so chill all the time reminded me of how easily humans can get desensitized to daily occurrences. When carrying out their judgements, the cast come across as familiar with their jobs as a manager at a fast food restaurant. Within a handful of episodes, Chiyuki numbers the rules of the death games like a game show host, trivializing the act of putting them on the spot to battle for their souls. That aspect of the arbiters' behaviour spoke to me and how I act in the workplace. I do some pretty brain-dead stuff at the office and don't ask too many questions, and I found the irony in this show's setup enjoyable

I love this OP. I've always described it as "A Slice Of Life for a Death Parade" because it has that feeling of just presenting the characters having a great time on a day off. I really wish this series had another season to expand on some of the questions it started asking and some of the worldbuilding it has in its later episodes, but I also feel that they did a good job to take the premise (which was originally a oneshot OVA called "Death Billiards") as far as they did... and asking for more could be playing with fire.

thank you for posting this video, it gave me the courage to finally finish the last two episodes of the series, after 4 years of leaving the end of the story in my mind to limbo. I frankly don't remember the series in complete detail, but the void it left always stuck in my mind bc I know my abandonment of the series was cowardly. Around that time I was always afraid of the end, I didn't want to move on and go to the next story, even though that was technically what I did in the end by abandoning it. It's kinda funny how even my own cowardice kinda ties into the story. Well it's been 4 years and I've grown up now, and I learned a lot more about partings and how to handle them, even if I cannot do anything about it. So I finished it, and cried over the ending. Now I can move on to something new, while keeping the story in my heart. Ty again for being the last push I needed to finish this series, and who knows, maybe I'll rewatch it some time in the future.

I love analytical videos over Death Parade. In fact, Death Parade was the First show I ever wrote about. So thanks, it never came to me to look at the OP from this perspective.
@PirateKingBoros4 жыл бұрын
I think it’s simple. A life or death scenario only gives you a peak at who someone is. That’s said while casting aside the fact that we don’t know who’s life or death is hanging in the balance. For example I’d do much different things in scenarios where my mother was in danger as opposed to one where I am. In the end as intense as it is... it is but one scenario. I’d argue that you’d get a better grasp on who someone is if you saw them in a scenario where they believe they have nothing to gain or lose. With no incentive or immediate danger to alter their choice they simply decide.

This video make me realise one train of thought in which we should, for a moment, forget the main motif of the series: forget death for a moment and take it as a metaphor. Think the arbiters not as immortal being, but as humans (100%) that isn't involved in a certain issue (you can pick any of the cases in the show as an exemple, any of the problems those dead characters goes right before they die) and still act as they could judge other people. Maybe they are a metaphor for judges in the legal system (real world's one), or a neighbour looking to the family next to him. If we take this approach we see clearly a criticism about how naive and low qualified human's minds are to classify acts as good or bad. This applies even to the ones directly involved (for exemple: the people being judged in the show). If you like: even if those people judge themselfs the system would remain flawed and injust. We can argue that only a inhuman and omniscient God could be just in His judgment, because a human comprehension and limited acess to information would always fail any "true moral rules" (by any definition you like for them). But this is my catholic part speaking louder than it should. Hope you enjoyed the reflection as I did enjoyed watching this video. ^_^
@piotr0044 жыл бұрын
I have thought about the same, literally like - hey, what if the judges in "Death Paradise" are like judges in our world? It's not hard to imagine that judging people all the time (when that judge is not personally and emotionally involved in every case and has a lot of different cases to judge) can easily make you desensitized...
@30Salmao4 жыл бұрын
@@piotr004 I think "desensitized" is a good thing in order to get it right. You would never be just to the law if you feel the cases. Therefore you shouldn't be involved ever, as the law want to (if you have any reason to have fellings by the matter you can't judge it). But if you are human you even being full reason and zero emotion you still being unfair because you can't get all the information 100% accurate. And since in the anime the judges haven't even human like lifes they are way more further from taking the matter right than a human judge in the real world (with all his flaws as human) would be. Of course, that's what I think. You might get it in other way. You are free to judge yourself, I should say xD

@wolfywonder84803 жыл бұрын
I think Flyers works so well because it's celebrating life. All these characters are dead or unable to live, but as the opening to a show all about the grievances that come with death, this song is specifically pointing out the mindset most living people have and show the main cast enjoying their time like any living human might. It reminds the viewers that death is only sad because life is often so happy - and while of course one's life experience varies wildly, life is always something that's celebrated, whether it be the birth of a baby, the celebration of a birthday or the fond recollection of times spent with someone no longer here. Life is always loved and celebrated, and this opening shows that perfectly.

Just finished this anime a couple days ago and I loved it, the only thing is that it was pretty short, but I enjoyed every single episode. If you are watching the anime for the first time -like me-, then from the name you can understand that this is some kind of party or show that they do for the people in the afterlife. But then, from the very first episode you can get the contrast of it. It's a pretty good message when Decim always says that he respects when people lived their lives to the fullest and well, this is a reminder for us at the end :) PD: That Psycho Pass Symphony (one of my favs btw) as BGM tho. +1000 pts haha.

The criticism of the judgement system is laid out in the show itself explicitly, so I don't know why you went into such detail about it or acted as if we needed to have it explained to us why it's flawed. Also, it's not fair to say that arbiters, in general, can't understand why someone would lie to save their loved one, when the one who didn't get it was Decim, who might be described as a bit emotionally stunted. Meanwhile Nona got that part just fine. In fact, she offers a deeper analysis than Chiyuki on the matter.

The moral question of Death Parade never quite landed for me because it wasn't much of a question. We don't know anything about the origin of the games or why the Arbiters do things the way they do, so we can only assess the merit of the system through the point of view of the humans, who are being tortured, seemingly for no reason. Why do people always arrive in pairs? Surely some people of the people who have been voided were better than some who have been saved because they had better "partners"? Why do different people get different Arbiters, and therefore different criteria for judgement? What's the point of absorbing a person's memories if the things they did in life don't impact their judgement? Even if life-or-death scenarios do provide an accurate representation of a person's character, why bother preserving a "good" person over a "bad" one if they're just going to be reincarnated anyway? Do certain souls have a predisposition towards good regardless of life circumstances? If not, wouldn't every soul fail the test and be voided eventually? Why can't every human be reincarnated? Are there new souls being created causing a space problem? The whole thing is very, well, arbitrary. The Arbiters seem to be all-powerful or at least extremely powerful, so without the answers to these questions we're left to assume that things are the way they are just because they (or Oculus or God) will it. Maybe, despite their friendly appearances, all of them except Decim are a bit like Ginti and just enjoy tormenting humans, but I think the show was going for something a little more ambiguous and complex than that. It was always raising the question of if the judgements were fair, and for me the answer was always, "Well, of course not". It's still a fantastic anime and a fantastic OP, I just wish they had some more time to flesh some of those things out.
@tilleul69174 жыл бұрын
I see Death Parade as an existentialist critic of manichean religions where there is a black or white "absolute moral judgement" of mortal lifes. The arbiters makes mistake and the whole system is flawed and non sustainable in the long term, and sooner or later you will get a crappy life leading to the void, so this system is absurd, that's my take on the show.
