Ugh, I totally agree with this. After lots of contemplation, I broke down and bought the 72 set and absolutely loved them, so as much as it hurt the bank account, I turned around an bought the 120 set. And that wooden box they came in? Its back in the box it came in and stored away with my pencils in a case. Just drop the box, put the 120 in a tin and they would sell no problem.

Or keep them in the box and save yourself an immerse amount of trouble. Nothing is as unwieldy, as easy to dump, or as frustrating as a tin. A box can save hours of time over a long project. No, they would not sell in a tin with no problem. As much as you love them, they cost far too much for the lack of quality they have. Tin, box, or paper sack, anyone who wants high quality professional level pencil is not going to buy these pencils. They';; buy Caran d'Ache Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos, or Prismacolor Premier, and if they can afford it at all, they'll get these brands in a box because a box really does save immense time and frustration. These pencils are selling because very few who have enough money to buy a hundred and twenty of them will spend that money on something better, and putting them in a tin won't change this unless they lower the price drastically because no matter how low the price goes, they still are not professional level pencils.

@@jamesaritchie1 …I just bought the 120 set…and compared to the other pencils not professional they do they are just slightly more than the Chromaflow at the mo on offer online…I agree as a pro you might not buy them but as colourist they are the better end of the lower end…if you get me…🤣🤣🥰
@TheArtGearGuide2 жыл бұрын
Not sure James how you drop Prismacolor in with professional pencil like the Caran d’Ache Luminance, Faber Castell Polychromos or Derwent Lightfast. Prismacolor claim to use the ASTM lightfast system and on that basis 85 of their pencils are LF 1 and 2 the rest can’t be used that’s 65 pencils not able to be used. The Derwent Artists are a little worse than Prismacolor with 50 LF1 or 2 pencils under the Blue Wool scale and 70 not able to use. As far as cost is concerned the Derwent tin sets are normally about 15-20% cheaper than their wooden box counter part and I am referring to Amazon U.K. prices. 72 ColourSoft Box set is £149 and tin is £119. A Wooden box of Derwent Artist on Amazon are between £160 and £189 so a tin could be sold for £130 - £140. For 132 set of Prismacolor on Amazon they are selling for £169 the 150 set is about £189. I know that both sets can be found cheaper elsewhere but for ease of example I am only using Amazon U.K. there is of course the fact that more people I am sure will prefer Prismacolor over the Artist given how hard the Artist are and not very pigmented, but I am just highlighting that whilst Prismacolor may be a much more popular pencil than the Artist, the is no place in time or the universe where Prismacolor should be placed beside the Luminance, Polychromos or Lightfast pencils. When it comes to the bottom line facts, not what the heart wants but the facts, neither the Artist or Prismacolor fall into the same category as the 3 aforementioned pencils. Hope you are keeping well and thank you so much for your comment

It's about money and sales numbers. They may list, but they can afford to lose money, whatever their customers want. Not enough artists are buying them, and, I think, for good reason. After I saw your video on this goegeous set a few weeks ago, I searched the internet high and low to still find this in stock somewhere. I was not willing to pay €499 on ebay. I finally was able to hunt one down at €240 on sale. I was tempted to get 2, as the 48 deleted colors are not available open stock anymore either, but only 1 set was in stock unfortunately. These pencils really surprised me. They are far more beautiful than I expected them to be. I adore the way they lay down on paper. Thank you for convincing me to finally buy this. Your idea of a metal tin with all 120 is really great and it baffles me that Derwent never thought of doing this, when the wooden box obviously kept man people from getting this set due to the higher price. I myself love the beautiful wooden box, but because our 1-room apartment has very limited work space for my drawing, I will have to move the pencils to a zippered pouch, so I don't have to fight with the large box on my tiny table, which really is a shame. But I do not regret that I got the box at all. PLEASE Derwent, bring the 48 colors back!!!!

I agree the wooden box is a problem. I got the 72 set, only because there were no way I was pawing out more than double the price to get the 120 set. Also, they are really really hard to find open stock to me. The lightfastness or rather the lack of it is another meh factor for me. If they had asked me what to do, I would have told them to ditch 20 of the 1-3 BW colours, and then make a 100 tin for them. I think they made a 100 tin for the Lightfast line already. The Artist line could do with a proper rewamp, not just a lazy one as they apparently went with. I don't think they did their marketing analysis very well. I don't think they asked themselves or anyone else why those colours does not sell.

I really love your channel, especially all the effort you put into your review videos... And I'm guilty of scrolling past the wooden boxes, too 😉

Hullo Harry, I estimate that the pencil pushers or bean counters will win out and Derwent is simply driving dedicated users away from the brand! I don’t have an extensive Derwent collection, but I like the pencils that I like! I hope your video creates a conversation about these pencils. Thank you for sharing this and bringing it to the light! Be Well young man.

Bean counters always win out, and they should. A business that loses money will soon be out of business. I doubt Derwent is driving many people away because a massive percentage of the Derwent sales come from the smaller sets. I know almost everyone suffers from "fullsetitis". If a company came out with a set that had ten thousand pencils at five dollars per pencil, a lot of people would sell their homes to get it. But the truth is not even a pro actually NEEDS more than seventy-two pencils, and very, very seldom needs that many. Artists, and the world, for that matter, would be much better off if we all practiced a degree of minimalism. Nothing extreme, but something short of the fullsetitis syndrome. I have full, huge sets of Caran d'Ache Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos, Prismacolor Premier, and a seventy-two set of Derwent Artist. In fairness, the only ones I had to buy are the Derwent. I not only don't need all the colors I have in each set, I haven't used a full third of them beyond test swatches. I've seen inside the tins and boxes a lot of pro artists have, and it's the same with almost all of them. A third unused, and usually another twenty or so that have a months of life left in them.

@@jamesaritchie1 I kind of agree with you about the minimalism thing. I don't have a lot of art supplies and my biggest set is 24 pencils. But if that is the argument, Derwent itself isn't the greatest company to turn to. They have like half a dozen different pencil lines, not counting watercolor pencils or speciality stuff like inktense or drawing. It's a bit weird that they keep churning out new pencil lines, yet remove a large chunk of colors in their long running and reliable line. Also hard disagree about "nobody needs more than 72 pencils". I don't, but I know at least a few artists, who regularly use more than 100 different colored pencils in their artwork. Just because you don't, doesn't make it a universal truth.

I would agree with you re a tin for the larger set of pencils! I skip the wooden boxes. They are a pain to use and store!

thank you for your video! I was pleased to hear more details from you about the subject. Yes I was shocked as well, when I heard this news about the artist pencils. Are they going to discontinue the 48 wooden box as well? I have the 120 pencils and love the special colours. Well I will stock up on my favourite colours now! I agree, most people will not buy these 48 colours, because they most likely, will not get in contact with them, since the wooden box is an investment. And most people are not going to buy colours they do not know in open stock.

Hello Harry, what a shame!! Those colors are absolutely stunning!! I don’t have that Derwent line but would love to try them out. Thank you for sharing! 😁

Thanks Harry x hopefully they will take note and try the 48 as an add on tin to the 72 and see how it goes business wise. Xx

You make great rational points about this sad decision. Wooden sets are splurges. Those colors you pointed out are lovely. 😢

Hi Harry. Thank you for your video and the giveaway. I personally prefer the wooden box over the tin one. It maybe a bit bulky but it holds the pencils better.

Thank you for the thumbs up. I have never tried the artist range, and now have the urge to. Wooden boxes for me present a huge storage/space issue. I prefer a tin anyday.

Thanks for all your videos - they're very helpful - I would love to try the artist range - I had an earlier set of the Derwent artists from years ago but I haven't updated them lately. Thanks again.

Anytime I'm thinking about buying a set of pencils I always look to see if you've done a video on that set of pencils. I've learned so much from watching your channel.

I really hope Derwent will see your video and reconsider their action, I suppose emailing the customer service to show that there is an interest for those additional colours. They are stunning and it is such a shame to loose them. Can I just say you are an amazing soul, donating to the centre !!! I mean I am speechless.
