It's statements like what you just said that reinforce people to buy diamonds. It's carbon and artificially producable. In the world, what is rare or what is articificially rare has value. Every diamond is unique. Fixing it's price depends on not only the traditional 4C's (carat, color, clarity and cut) 5th C comes into picture context. It will be valued more by the person who is looking for a diamond with those physical characteristics, than a person who is okay to buy anything. Value of Gold is entirely dependent on its purity and weight, nothing else. If I need 45 grams of pure gold, and I buy 50 grams of 90% pure gold, it is practically the same. We can't say that about diamonds. Diamonds don't give the fairness in valuation and thereby the liquidity that gold gives you.

Not really. Gold watches increase in price. Unless the watch is a relic or a classic...or from a huge company, not a good investment. It's still an unstable investment even if it is. The price of the watch would still be variable from buyer to buyer. Gold price is universally constant at any point of time everywhere. I know people who barely got the benefit of 60k for owning a diamond worth 50k bought 5 years back. Theoretically, even silver is a better investment.
