Tyrese Haliburton will be the MVP of the In-Season Tournament over LeBron James with one more win. Most people never saw this coming when he was drafted but it was still a shock that 11 teams passed on him. This is a look at why that happened and if the Kings were wrong to give up on him so early.

People gotta realize Buddy Hield was a cancer on the Kings. After his most improved 2019 season and he got paid, he stopped caring and became Jordan Poole'esque. Trading Haliburton wasn't just to get Sabonis but also to unload Hield's big contract because as a Kings fan watching Hield play on both sides of the ball was infuriating because he flat out did not care and he still had the audacity to complain to the media about not having the ball in his hands as much as he wanted. The trade didn't just make Fox & Sabonis All-NBA talents, it replaced Hield with Malik Monk, Trey Lyles, Kevin Huerter, and Keegan Murray. For Buddy Hield who played like he hated living in Sacramento and wanted to get traded, we got 4 players who play like they love Sacramento and want to stay. Kings pretty much got a full rebuild just from trading 2 players. Yes Haliburton is shining in Indy, but if the Kings traded Fox the narrative would be the same but for Fox. "Did the Kings trade the wrong PG?" Let's be real here, the media has never liked the Kings nor has the media ever given the Kings recognition despite the current success, if Hali was still on the Kings he'd still be flying under the radar while Fox would be getting all the national attention in Indy.

I do agree if Fox would’ve been the one traded than the narratives would be the same just the other away around. It still does not change the fact that this trade was a loss. Sure it’s been good short term but it gonna look bad long term and as someone who loves haliburton I still believe trading haliburton was the right choice just not for Sabonis. The kings need a center ever since boogie was traded and they had the opportunity to get a player of Sabonis’s caliber in the draft with sengun yet they make a braindead pick with Davion and miss out on the opportunity of acquiring a center and trading rese for a wing they desperately needed. Monte just got desperate to make the playoffs and at the time it worked but we gonna look back and say what was he thinking. He also never made it known Tyrese was on the market where many teams came out after the trade and announced they were willing to give up more for Tyrese

Yes, the people that watch Kings basketball are the only people that don't regret the trade. Fox is awesome and he works really well with Sabonis. "Fourth Quarter Fox" is not the bust that people are pretending he is. And the Kings are coming off their best season in decades. Calling them a "first round exit" team after they seeded 3rd in the West and took the underseeded Warriors to a game 7 in their first full year together is pretty tone deaf. That trade was a huge win for both teams. As a Pacers fan that has been keeping up with Sabonis, I wish the Kings the best and I expect to see a Sac-Indy Finals in the coming years, as both teams mature.

I'm sorry A.M. I have to push back on that narrative of the Sacramento Kings making a mistake trading him to Indiana. Both him and Fox wouldn't have flourished as the players they are today if they were playing under one another. This was definitely a win-win situation for both teams and I'm not a Sacramento Kings or Indiana Pacers fan. The Kings got exactly what they we're looking for when they traded for Sabonis and paired him up with Fox. This is truly a definition of a win-win situation for both organizations. Have to disagree with you on that narrative that the Sacramento made a mistake in trading him It worked out for them both.

This. The only reason this narrative is being pushed is because of the Pacers/Haliburtons recent success. The trade happened almost 2 years ago now and within the last year, the Pacers have been stuck in mediocrity without really changing their roster. The only difference between the 2 teams is that the Kings were able to succeed a little bit quicker with the pieces they were given. It really is a "win/win" trade.

@@dominiklovric4026you realize haliburton was traded as only a 2nd year player right? Everybody knew pacers were not going to have immediate success it just came down to how good will haliburton be in the next couple years and starting to enter the mvp conversation in only his 4th year is pretty absurd so the narrative is going to be pushed harder than ever

Tyrese definitely needed to be traded but doesn’t hide the fact the kings made desperation moves and could’ve become a much better team if they gave a little more time but monte saw they were about to have the record for the longest playoff drought and had to pull the plug. The Kings had exactly the center they desperately needed before that in the obvious pick in 21 with sengun but decided to get Davion and had the chance to get quite a bit for haliburton but he was never exactly on the market for trade and Monte limited his trade targets to Philly and Indy where if they made his availability public we could’ve seen the a much bigger trade. Maybe it’s for the best though bc the wolves came out saying they had no idea he was available and would’ve given more to the Kings and Tyrese and Edwards would be taking over the league rn so ig it worked out

It's pretty clear that he hasn't even watched any Pacers games before the IST quarterfinals. Also, Jalen isn't a starter. Myles Turner starts and Jalen comes off the bench for him. The other backup is Isaiah Jackson, who has also been playing well. That's how deep the Pacers bench is.

The Haliburton for Sabonis trade, only problem really is Kings gave up Haliburton for too little. That trade also include Buddy Hield I believed. The draft assets they received were too little. @benbengalykaba2957 DV was categorized as a SG/SF or a wing in college and is capable in both positions, while TH was a tall and rangy PG. here is a part of his draft scouting report: Vassell is a rangy wing player who plays hard on both ends of the floor. After a breakout sophomore season he projects as a likely lottery pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and possibly the top wing defender in this class. the spurs at that time drafted based on position of need and not best player available. also if they picked TH this wouldve slighted murray who was their pg of the future atm. in hindsight the spurs definitely should've picked TH. and also sengun instead of JP the flasher.

IUPUI is (was) in Indy. Seems like fate Also, Obi Toppin is off the Knicks...and on the same Tyrese in the Pacers. Oops indeed. Lastly, Im neither a Kings fan nor an NBA media member (Pacers fan if that wasn't obvious) and I still say it was still a win win trade. There is no telling if Tyrese would have blossomed like he has if he had stayed there. Playing time, chemistry, coaching, etc all play a role. He and Fox were splitting minutes, and SAC had to pick one to give the role to. They got an all-star guy in return who immediately elevated them to a playoff team. Yeah, they probably still have more work to do to build off that, but, that was the next step for the franchise (one that took them how long to make?) and to act like it was a bad call for them in retrospect when there is little to suggest keeping Tyrese would have resulted in the same or better outcome is pretty asinine to be honest. That trade revitalized a basement franchise. For the Pacers side of it, we were facing a similar decision having to pick between Turner and Sabonis as the "twin towers" strategy wasn't paying off nor was it tenable long term and Sabonis had the most trade capital given his all star appearance. Turner allegedly asking for a trade was almost certainly a contract negotiation tactic btw. We were also in the midst of a rebuild (tank) already and these moves were part of that and thankfully sped up the process. And guess what? Both teams came out better for it, which is the definition of a win win. Can't see how anyone could objectively argue otherwise to be frank.

I am also a Pacers fan that has adopted the Kings because Domas is my favourite player and I believe one of the best in the league. I think they will both have 10 plus All Star years and both squads are excellent. This could have easily been a Kings Pacers final on Sunday if Keegan Murray was properly healthy in the game against the Pels. They were on fire in the first quarter and Sabonis and Fox had great games. Both teams are hovering around sixth this year and Pacers could have been much better last year except for Hartenstein landing on Ty's foot in early December. Definitely still win-win

Dubs chose the NEED over TALENT that time. They felt they needed a reliable big more than anything else thus picking Wiseman, unfortunately he never lived up to the expectation as he had injuries and difficulties improving his inside game. Lamelo would've been a really great choice for GSW because he's a 6'7 solid pg who can shoot, facilitate, and dish assists, since Steph plays like a shooting guard with his crazy scoring arsenal. Lamelo with GSW would average double double in points and assists with all the scorers around him.

Funny thing, some of those bust picks that passed on Hali are actually not bad players. Pacers gets the last laugh by getting Tyrese and those "busts" players for literally nothing. Look at how Obi Toppin, Jalen Smith, Aaron Neismith is doing on the Pacers is just so comforting with Pacers winning the jackpot. I can expect the same thing with James Wiseman since he now signed with the Pacers

Spurs have both D.White and Dejounte Murray, two best two way guards and most of the fans backed then were pissed off on always picking PGs but now, the only natural PG in the line up is Tre Jones.

Pacers have Toppin, J Smith ( who is awesome this year), Nesmith, Jackson and Tyrese. Thankyou bubble year. Pacers and Kings both in great shape and the Pacers pick that year Chris Duarte is going to be great for the Kings too. He just didn't fit with Mathurin at the Pacers.

Am I the only one who thinks he's overrated so much? Please don't blame me and hear me out. At first, I would say that he is a good player, like top 15 or 10 in the NBA right now, but everyone hypes him so much, saying he's a point god (actually, I did too at the beginning). Everyone that I talked to praised him so much. I didn't have any grievances, and I think he's very good, but around 80% of people forgot about his teammate. These guys praise him like he's the best point guard with 15 assists and 0 turnovers - that's crazy (it's actually crazy). But some assists didn't come from Haliburton's skill but from his teammate's skill (like some tough shots or clutch shots). I wouldn't say he's the best point guard in the NBA right now because there are Curry and Luka there. Why I think he's overrated is because people give him credit very much and forget how good the Pacers were (this doesn't mean that the Pacers would be good without Haliburton; I just want to say that Haliburton is good, but the Pacers are a good team too, and people give him credit so much and don't give other players credit). You all can give me some of your opinions, and stay positive because this is just my opinion.

This guy should win a championship first, that's all that matters. This "Why NBA teams passed up on this player" is getting toxic. Scouts are not psychics and no matter how much scouting they did, there's always a possibility of picking a bust. As a Spurs fan, passing up this guy is the best thing they did, if we picked Tyrese then we would not get Wemby. And it's not like Vassell is a terrible player.

As a Warriors fan, we fkd up ENTIRELY on our 2020 draft picks, we not only passed up on Tyrese and Lamelo but numerous other guys that are great, also with our 2nd pick we took Nico Manion and people are probably wondering why im bringing this up its because the very next pick was Isaiah Joe and he’s a sniper! Warriors could’ve had Tyrese or Lamelo with Isaiah Joe, then the next draft in 2021 we SHOULDVE taken Franz Wagner instead of Kuminga, so far the ONLY draft pick the Warriors have hit on has been Moses Moody, Kuminga hasn’t reached the potential or ceiling that we invsioned when we drafted him and now that’s his 3rd season already and he’s only showed MINOR improvements I don’t think he ever will reach his ceiling, he might just need a fresh start with a new team and he is still only 21 so he actually does have some time left but if he doesn’t put it together in at least 2 seasons then his current version of himself might be his peak.

Sure, Vassell is not Haliburton but at least it doesn't sting as much as the other picks before him. On the other hand, the Spurs could have gotten Haliburton and Wemby. It was a possibility. Jeez.
