As per my knowledge Mahabharata was written before it happened, because after getting powers from maata Saraswathi, vedayasa went to lord Shiva and said I want to write a mahagranth, for that I want a person who is eligible to write it in this world. Then lord shiva sujested Ganesha's name. Then vyasa took ganesh with him and started telling the story, they had a challenge as explained in the story, while writing Ganesha's pen will break, he will replace it with his tusk and completed the story, and once after the story got end, it was taken to lord Shiva, then he saw that one of his son's tusk is missing, then ganeshji explains what had happened, so lord shiva blessed him and said, your efforts should not go waste, this will happen really in Dwapara yough. This is the birth of *Mahabharata*
