This video explains it all on point. The whistle register overuse also caused the same problem. Although we love when she hits those high notes.

Totally agree! Mariah changed her sound from thicker tone / lower larynx to thinner tone / higher larynx, and also increased more supglottal pressure , gradually, starting from 1993, and finally stayed at “that tone” in 1995. I’m more on the side of that she changed it for being more “R&B/Urban”, instead of sounding soulful , than just for the ease of high notes. While keep stretching and stretching her vocal chords during 1995-1996, and (I believe) lack of proper balance maintenance of her thicker configuration, her vocal chords started to loose its elasticity since 1997 (and of course with added cigarettes and alcohol due to the divorce). She still hits high notes with the same technique in Butterfly Era, but the tone was very different and lack of richness due to less thick vocal chords engaged. And during Rainbow Era, she started to lose her ability to stretch her voice, leaving only too much thickness and dark tone. She regained her vocal balance almost when she did the CB Tour, but then she started to hit high notes with too much subglottal pressure but much lighter vocal cords configuration then 1990-1992. And she stayed there all the way until 2013, we heard a bit of Daydream Mariah Back. Anyway, my opinion is that, she never loses her voice, but lack of proper training and maintenance, and also unhealthy life style for her voice. She always sounds good in Studio recordings , when she wants it good.

What strikes me is how QUICK her voice changed. If it was only from technique it would have been gradual, and we would have seen the progression of the change on the daydream tours. It was an abrupt change in tonal quality for me, leading me to believe there was an event that caused her to have vocal injury following her divorce that led to the sudden change in her voice. Given she already has nodules, the rasp that she acquired seem to indicate a swelling on the folds.

@noahflare6825 in her Daydream tpur you can hear gradually that her voice was starting to fail, in the last dates especially in Paris there are many strained notes and many off pitch notes, It was gradual, not to mention that there was the tour and the recording of butterfly, singing climaxes like Outside's would not have been easy for her voice.

PRECISELY. It was simply more than just technique which caused her change, and we'll likely never know the true cause, but I've also seen from others a theory that Mariah likely suffered some kind of vocal hemorrhage during the recording of the Merry Christmas album because her voice in late '93/early '94 (before the album was recorded in Summer of '94), was also strikingly different, tonally, to late '94 during the St. John the Divine concert and recording of Daydream. I feel like the abrupt change during the Butterfly era was just the end of an inevitable failing of her instrument due to the damage already present since before she started that just worsened during the divorce. Her voice is such a mystery tbh.

It wasn’t really quick tho. We saw more from her bad moments because 1. She started performing more 2. She went to a more round vowel shaping which is way healthier for her voice 3. Her voice started its first lowering 4. Fatigue, which caused swelling in her vocal folds which brought phlegm as a consequence (we can hear her sometimes turning more nasal and having kind of a flu-ish rasp instead of a grainy sound as most years post 2005 or even sometimes in the 90’s and early 2000’s)

I think it's important to mention that, while her technique will always play a significant role on her singing. she was also dealing with lots of personal stuff during the end of daydream-beginning of glitter era. lack of rest, stress and maybe alcohol are other factors that will be added into what lead to her sound during those years
@mclambangel
@mclambangel 2 ай бұрын
@vicktheengine5304 alcoholism only affects the voice when it's very extreme cases (people who live all day on alcohol), which I don't think is the case with Mariah, stress if it can be, but the weird thing is that Mariah describes Butterfly as her best time, where she had many freedoms that she didn't have before. The change from Daydream to Butterfly in terms of her voice is very notorious, that's only caused by the misuse of the voice for an extended period of time.

In addition to everything mentioned in the video, there's the fact that she went to the limit and beyond her vocal range in the studio, as her songs are extremely complex to sing. Nodules from an early age, songs and ornamentation that were almost impossible to replicate live, more touring and changing her technique to achieve a more popular, high-pitched sound, plus the use of the whistle and whisper register and extensive constant changing of vocal cord closures led to her having a very short peak. Her peak was short but she will always be remembered, as a vocalist she left a legacy that is still studied today by vocalists and musicians, she sacrificed her voice for the love of music and art.

Are we forgetting the period she recorded the Butterfly album, some of her best vocals (Outside, Whenever You Call, etc)??? Plus the stress of drama she was going thru during that time; divorce, label drama, new relationship, endless promo / touring schedule (aka no sleep / rest)?!?!? I’d say that’s what prob caused the Bfly Era to be so harsh on her instrument. She had another peak during the Charmbracelet Tour, so her voice did manage to rebound. I’d say since recording TEOM her voice hasn’t been the same tho (allegedly Alcohol and smoking contributed… aka FUN, enjoying her life finally!)

Good point! Although I honestly think that you should’ve explored a little bit more and considered other vocal moments that happened within the eras/years mentioned, specially on that E5. I believe that 1992-1993 still had more bad E5s than daydream has. While daydream definitely has more good E5s. While I agree that the If Its Over from 1992 is a better E5 than that tensed, thin and pushy E5 in Fantasy from 1996. There are still lots of other moments (Specifically on I Dont Wanna Cry) that is as good or even better than that If Its Over performance,

@@DaydreamCarey1234 I wasn't comparing eras, I was comparing vocal techniques. Like I said in the video, Daydream's mistakes weren't very consistent, but doing them for a long period of time affected her voice. All of Mariah's eras have bad notes. I don't even know why you start comparing notes based on eras. What I wanted to show in the video was that the 92-93 technique allowed her to do a perfect vocal performance (in my opinion the most perfect vocal performance in her entire career). Daydream's technique tired Mariah's voice so much that it was the era where she started lip-syncing, and that sums it all up.

I've been saying this for years. The way she sang in Daydream is what damaged her voice. That very high bright tone is not her natural voice, she really was at her best in 1993, she still had her natural darker tone and she got way better at singing. It was only until she started doing that unnatural chipmunk voice that her voice starting to become damage. Hell even her voice wasn't damaged in 1990-1992 when she was straining, granted she didn't sing that much or tour but you'd think it would left her off in a far worse position by the time music box rolled around, but even then she was still singing in a more natural tone than daydream ever was.

I believe as a Singer, protecting your own vocal is a responsibility and something she needs to do. Though she always follow her own instincts on music, vocal coach may give her some guidance on some vocal practice to maintain her vocal elasticity. And also, the only reason she keeps lip sync during live performance, is because she lack of confidence. She has no confidence over how her vocal would show during live performance. She is afraid of the failure, that is because i doubt she doesn’t really do much of vocal exercise. Keep singing is not a vocal exercise. Vocal exercise keeps her vocal elasticity. We know she has vocal nodules, but this is already the fact. She shall stop using this excuse, stop lip sync and start to do more vocal exercises, if she still wants her career to be a singer-songwriter.

Mariah has to go back to the technique she used in her early days (90-94) beacon theater is proof that she can. but she prefers the nasal and metal sound that is heard in caution for example, i don't know why

I honestly don't get why Daydream gets blamed for the decline. If you watched her T.V. performances after the tour (e.g. Open Arms) her voice is still in good shape. I have always defended Daydream because it wasn't exactly the main reason for the decline. It was the continuous promotion that she did for Butterfly. She did not get enough rest after the tour and continued on recording and promoting the Butterfly album. She even had more number of shows for the Butterfly concert compared to Daydream. #StopTheDaydreamSlander

@@mclambangel Mariah had nodules and her voice was not up for strenuous activities. Which is why her voice was tired by the end of the tour. Like I said, her voice was still okay after the tour and could've been restored easily with rest. But that's the thing, she did not stop promoting for her next album. I mean, you said it yourself in your comment, her voice was not fine by the time she's promoting Butterfly. P.S. Please show me these specific performances that she used playback for after the tour. i think this video has some very good points but I still don’t agree with everything mentioned in this video. first of all - Mariah always had that slight raspy quality in her voice even during her prime, as a result of her vocal nodules. that Hero performance you used to showcase her raspy and dry vocals was in the morning, even my voice sounds airy and raspy in the morning and i don’t have nodules😄 plus i don’t think you were objective enough with analyzing Mariah’s Daydream technique compared 1992-1993 era. yes, that sustained Fantasy E5 was very tense and the Grammy’s 1992 If It’s Over performance was much better (probably her best vocal performance ever) but that was exceptionally good moment, not a standard, she wasn’t delivering those vocals consistently in 1992-1993. Daydream has much more good F5s and F#5s compared to 1992-1993, in Madison Square Garden 1995 she hit like 6 F#5s and all those were with great technique. it was a great progress compared to like MTV Unplugged (1992). even on her Music Box tour she struggled with belts above D5 (yes i know she was sick on some of those dates), Daydream tour has consistently delivered great F5s with vibrato in Always Be My Baby (except for Paris lol), great F#5s in Make It Happen, and also her D5s, Eb5s in Emotions sounded MUCH more open during Daydream era than ever before - plus she was confident enough to add more F5 adlibs and they also sounded AMAZING😇

I don't agree on this. What affected her voice was few days of rest or lack of rest at all. Lesser time to sleep or no sleep at all while doing loads and trail of concerts will really damage her vocal cords and It's surrounding muscles. Always remember, every singing and vocal performance takes a lot of muscle and vocal work and stress. Same as after doing a workout in the gym and having a fight on a boxing, After so, these muscles needs to rest because some muscles a stretched, muscles that's stretched promotes tearing and damage. And in order for these muscle and vocal tissues to heal, they would need rest. To tell you all honestly, muscle tissue healing takes 7 to 10 days and even up until 2 to 3 weeks to be successful and be ready for another vocal exercise and or performance. So then if your vocal muscles and vocal cord has not been really damaged due to a strenuous singing performance on a concert, even if you tell me that you feel fine and did not strain nor overuse your voice and you did not hit too much high notes, You are still responsible to care for your voice and to give it rest because logically you still used it and some tissues would still have minimal stretch, redness and swelling. So then again, this only means your voice still need to rest for at least 2 to 3 days before performing again on a concert. But then I would still suggest 5 to 7 days to be more careful and sure. This is also the reason why a lot of popular pop, r&b and other genre singers would often have different vocal sounds and textures and their career continues, They were not able to have proper time to rest. All their producers and managers would think about is for them to sing, record songs and do legs of concerts. These are more evident with rock, alternative rock and rock metal genre singers! So to all of us singers here, let's take good care of our singing voices, let's avoid damaging it and let's not abuse it. I'm not a perfect person regarding this situation but I always do my best to take care of my singing voice which is God's Given Talent and Treasure. I always make sure and always see to it that my voice and vocal cords would have enough rest after every performance po. God Bless Everyone And All Of Us Always. 🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️🎤❤️🎁😊🙏
