There is also the reverse theory, that when Emilia calls herself Satella, Satella herself assumes Subaru is talking to Satella, not Emilia, and then Satella interprets everything that happens after that in the first loop as directed at her instead of Emilia. This then leads to Satella falling in love with Subaru, and may have even affected her decision to grant Subaru the Return by Death ability.

When I first saw the flashback where subaru remembers that emilia called herself satella, I thought that in the first Episode it was for some unknown spooky reason really the witch satella instead of emilia. After subaru died, he wasn't transported to the past of this exact world but into the past of a parallel universe, where she wasn't satella but emilia, how it should be. Somehow I thought every time he dies he is traveling to a parallel universe where minor and sometimes major things are different. In the first universe satella was there instead of emilia, after subaru died and time got rewinded, he woke up in a different universe where emilia was there instead of satella.

It's pretty easy to deduce that Subaru was slowing her down and she was just being nice to him but still saw him as a creepy dude. She literally pulled the move that every women at a bar does when a really creepy persistent dude walks up trying to get her number, she threw him a fake. Suddenly she has this lost and dumb kitten named Subaru with sanpaku eyes following her but she is too busy to help him. She feels sorry for him and wants to help him but it would be more beneficial to her if he went away in that moment so she could search for her stolen insignia. She called herself Satella because she thought he'd run away and leave her alone and she could go on by herself but when he didn't run away she got embarrassed and immediately felt bad and she realized she messed up because Subaru is an illiterate foreigner that doesn't even know who Satella is that is just trying to be nice to her. Puck sensed no malice in him but she still threw him a fake to get rid of him.

If you watch the ova frozen bonds carefully, you'll see how much people hurt her and end up getting hurt themselves when they get close to her. So she started avoiding people if she could help it. In Ayamatsu If, Subaru speculates she used an alias to get him to go away. This seems fine on the surface... except it stops making sense when you think about it. We are supposing the reaction Emilia desires from Subaru is for him to quietly slink away. If a "normal" girl introduced herself as "Satella" the expected reaction from someone in Lagunica would not be to slowly back off, but probably feel disgusted. If a half elf introduced herself that way, you can probably expect sheer terror. A normal person in the world might have shit his pants, run away screaming the witch came back, or do something erratic. Unless Emilia was trying to get him to stop following him and also had a _weird sense of humor,_ in which case this lie would not only serve to make him go away but give her a chuckle. well, I will argue you don't need any other media than the anime to understand that. many questions came from people half assed watching the anime, those that usually watch brain dead anime like Dragon ball and the like, where there are one or two questions maximum, and other questions that rise get answered in same episode. here we get tons of questions that may remain unanswered for several episodes or arcs. some times we also get fake answers that in retro perspective we know they were lies in order to obtain a certain objective. here Emilia is used to be hated, so she prefers he stars hating her now than later wen she grows more attach to him. a simple answered that didn't needed to be spelled out (something that was in plain sight if you where paying attention to their reactions also, and not watching it in the background while playing an RPG).

I've only watched the anime and watched youtubers for info after said anime so my input may be weak but, i kinda thought it might be a pact since they are so powerful and important in this world, while (to my knowledge) we dont know if Roswell's curse/pact would have worked for sure, it is possible if the magic goes so far as to attack the soul that it could have killed him therefore would presumably be extremely powerful, and the only time (again that i know of) that Subaru Truly Died was an side route that he "saved" her, so its possible that he actually made a pact with Emilia/Satella/Envy, honestly i thought that might even be the reason for his Return by Death power as it doesnt seem that any of the other Authoritys tie there respective witches to them, also Envys not dead but locked away so her witch factor is probably still with her therefore her Authority is still with her, so i think its entirely possible that Return by Death is actually the pact (also this would kinda explain why Subaru's save point would be after saving Emilia in arc 3 but he couldnt go back to save Rem but thats kinda reaching) and that Envy is tagging along with him which would also have the added effect of puting her miasma on him when he jumps cuz as far as i know the use of a Authority doesnt increase the "smell" instead it should be something of a constant amount on a Authority carrier, buuuut thats all just a theory.Though i do think its possible that there could be time shenanigans going on and that Satella is that first iteration of Emilia taking the name as some kind of paradox type thing but thats total speculation.

She did it as a test for Subaru. She was checking him out and trying to size him up the moment before. Trying to figure out where he came from and what he might know. As Puck said, she has a terrible sense of humor. It was a joke meant for someone of that world to react negatively. But the joke failed to land since Subaru didn't understand the connotation, since hes not from that world. That explains why she gave the name in the first place, but an explanation of why she didn't correct the misunderstanding is likely because shes a Royal Candidate, just lost a VERY important item to that, and simply didn't want her name being spread around in rumors. She likely intended to not give a name at all, or an fake name if needed. When trying to think of a fake name... her bad sense of humor cropped up.

Subaru brings it up that the witch of envy is called satella and emilia is like oh so that's what she's called she only knew her as the witch of envy. I haven’t read any of the novels so this is speculation completely based on the anime, but I really think that Emilia is Satella, always has been always will be. We know that Satella is the reason for Subaru’s returning from death, so it wouldn’t be far fetched that she can manipulate time in some sort of way. The same way Subaru has been pulled back in the time by Satella’s hands, She might have pulled herself 400 years back in time before going berserk.

The author is not the type to call Emilia Satella in the first episode, that is definitely foreshadowing at play! If he stated that himself, that may be because he hasn't written that Satella is Emilia ep 1 yet in the story. I believe Satella or Subaru stated to a villager that her name is Satella, and no reaction came from the villager. I don't remember a villager acting surprised. Didn't Subaru call her Satella in the loot house too? Did any of this happen in the web or light novel? Or did Subaru never mention her name "Satella" around any of the villagers? Lol

Emilia never told anyone other than Subaru that she was "Satella" and the reason she called herself Satella in front of Subaru was to scare him away since she didn't want to get hurt again but he didn't care which made her happy and ashamed that she lied to him and was what she was going to tell him after he got her insignia. Her telling a villager she was Satella never happened. Something similar did happen in Frozen bonds but she didn't call herself Satella but just a witch and again this was to scare them off the village because the forest was becoming to dangerous for them because of mabeasts. He also never called her Satella in the loot house since in none of the failed loops did she mention her name to Felt nor Rom and after he talked to Emilia and called her Satella in front of everyone on the street they did react and some where a but nervous while others said that was very fucked up for him to call someone that. It was already said in the anime but basically she wants Subaru not to die so the purpose of RBD isn't primarily to undo his mistakes but instead to ensure he doesn't die. Like they already stated in the anime everything else is up to Subaru, Woe/Satella just makes sure he gets a standpoint at which he can somehow escape death. For example if he were getting attacked hy lets say Lye then he will spawn at a point were he can survive somehow, either by leaving or getting someone to kill Lye

Puck did maybe knew Flugle and he might have knew Satella and well he was older Subaru because the Vainglory witch manipulated some events by trying to kill him in the past but Satella went bezerk when Flugle died.... so she decided to wait for the right time to pull Flugle back from the dead or something but since maybe Fluguel and Subaru are one and the same she pulled out the younger Subaru into the future. And so he could kill her by preventing The witch of vainglory to use the seal into the forest and to absorb the witch factor of envy and make her leap through time to kill Satella back then.... hmmm It might explain why Flugle knew so much about the stars from Earth. So he might of knew he would somehow need the tower one day. So the Subaru from now is or not the same as Flugle. He did seal Satella for preventing more bloodshed but also to prevent someone else to take the her witch factor. Beside Shaula confused Subaru with Flugle since they both smelled of the witch miasma. The witch of vainglory might have done something to influence what Satella did after taking in the witch factor of envy. ANOTHER THEORY : Odlanga might of also alowed Subaru into the world so to bring back balance into Lugunica ? Hahaha, I hope not tho!
