There is a lot of great social and strategic gameplay embedded in Squid Game: The Challenge. The only problem is... a lot of people just don't understand how competitive these reality games can get! In this recap, I talk about the Marbles Competition and the controversy surrounding Ashley's moves during the Glass Bridge.

Ashley decision didn’t make much sense to me. She had an early number so agreeing to the plan was in her favor. She wasn’t avoiding that jump. I think there was a big risk for everyone to turn against her. Cuz let me tell you there is no way I would’ve quietly watch her do that and jump in front for her. Ashley had a better chance of not falling if she’d just gone with the group’s plan, otherwise she’d have jumped till she failed or made it to the end, and seeing as how she was number 5, she’d have had a much higher chance of falling if they just stayed in order. She was being chickenshit, plain and simple, and I find it awesome that the only person to call her on being a coward ended up winning the entire contest…lol

The group plan probably was better since she was in the front, but I also think it was smart for her to let Trey sabotage himself bc he made it easier for everyone by clearing the board. Someone else could have easily passed Ashley and continued with the plan.. but no one stepped up 🤷‍♀️

@@KayLaFro - Yeah...if she was further back in the line, I could see cause for pushing back against the "group 50/50" idea. She probably panicked and reactively dug her heels in. She's just lucky the rest of the folks in the group were very passive and just rolled over at a hint of adversity. Trey let himself get bullied into continuing. I'd have sat my butt down and said "Waiting on you or we all go down." I think if other contestants had to pass Ashley up, after she *didn't* jump, that would have likely quickened her exit from the show, as it would have looked much worse to risk everyone else, rather than how it went, and only affected Trey.

@@KayLaFro It is not about her not following the plan, it is about her attitude afterward, she was not just selfish but a hypocrite and tried to hate on Mai for calling her out, she was salty for the rest of the game for no reason. I get not stepping up and I don't blame her for that (if she had had a different attitude about it, I would be praising her), and the fact that others didn't hold her accountable for it, is not on her, that's on everyone else. But the Gaslighting, hating on people that call you out on your bullshit, the audacity and the lack of shame to so loudly go with the plan after she did what she did, and last but not least being so happy when Mai's best friend was eliminated even while she is actively crying. Ashley stinks and trey only continued the glass bridge bc the time was running out and everyone was behind him complaining; after his second jump, I knew he deserved his spot twice as much than her; unfortunately her stubbornness led to Trey’s fall; so only when she was FORCED to, did she take the 50/50 chance and then acted like a hero for doing so, like that was the bare minimum she was supposed to do, so she did not deserve her spot and became the villain of the whole show

Mai did the right thing choosing friendship over gender. Amanda’s whole view is “All that matters is they’re a woman, never mind who they are at heart.” Which if the roles were reverse and it was a man saying “Save all the men”, anyone would see just as clearly how wrong that would be.

I think you’re too naïve to see the fact that she didn’t want to go with a plan when it didn’t benefit her. She was saying how she didn’t agree with the plan when some people were in front of her and she wanted them to take the shots, 100% in favor of group strategy work together when it was her turn to be put on the line. You can cry all you want about it strategy for her not to go and not agree with this. But she benefited from letting everyone else go ahead of her when she didn’t want to do that herself. I don’t think you understand why because you actually liked her and the audience didn’t. She ended up target Mai when she had legit reason to actually have a target on her. it also doesn’t help that the entire cast was enabling her to engage in this behavior.

Ashley refused to step up and take her turn per the plan, but after she had to make her jump, she turned around expecting the person behind her to go in front of her. So she expected of someone else the same thing that was expected of her (that she did not do). That is where I see her being a jerk/not a team player. So per HER RULES she should have had to just keep jumping forward until she “fell” or made it to the other side. Nobody should have stepped in front of her since she didn’t give the person in front of her the same courtesy. After she fell, they could have resumed the team plan. Also, do you think that any of those tiles could open and the producers could just decide who they wanted to “fall”? Now that you said a stunt person fell, they must have jumped, and then waited to find out if they were “safe” or if it was “time to move so the stunt person to move into the spot and fall” making this game completely fake and unreliable to trust that it was done fairly.

I think that's what I'm most upset about. You and many others agree with her, but if what you're saying is true, and they are responsible for themselves, why didn't she continue to stick to her own plan? She only followed their plan when it benefited her. That's the part that many people do not understand.

I agree with all of your commentary and good interpretations with the exception of Ashley. She may not have agreed to one jump per, but she sure agreed to let someone else take the risk and jump in front of her. When you pick for yourself (after a majority has picked team play), and you then get labeled as selfish... it's the right label IMO, and you get all of the negative connotations that go along with that. IF she had loudly stated during the discussion that she would not be agreeing in the "team strategy" that would've been acceptable- but she didn't as far as we can tell by editing.

Should have had the plan stay the same but anyone who decided not to would have to go non stop once the number of people that have been eliminated is 1 before them. If 5 decided not to go with team plan then once 4 people are out, 5 should have to go till end or elimination.

I liked her. She kept it real. Also two players who were on the bridge both said it was highly edited and that no one was upset with Ashley but Mai because the guy Trey actually went rogue and just started jumping out of nowhere. Mai didn’t see it because she was the luckiest player who went last therefore was all the way in the back

10:23 actually it is. If Ashley was smarter she would’ve realised that this strategy increased her chances of getting through by 10 fold. Instead of having to make 8-10 jumps correctly she just has to make one. Instead she did the most selfish thing she could do in that situation by letting Tyler go first multiple times, only using the 1 step rule when it suited her. But I guess she’s black so you’ve got to back her no matter what.

Choosing to make everyone have a turn doesn't throw the social strategy aspect of the game imo It is the social strategy of the game Putting the fact that everyone has to jump as a ground rule should in theory prevent people from doing what Ashley did, which is not jumping If one decides to not jump it could put the game in a stalemate situation And for the game of marbles yes splitting up give the possibility of a greater reward(both passing) but also a greater risk( none passing) Making sure that at least one of you pass is anything but a bad plan imo Instead of taking chances, you make sure you have a somewhat good outcome

I didn’t like the fact that Mai tried to call Ashley out for not agreeing with the group’s plan when she did the SAME THING when the girls came together to agree to only choose each other and Mai being the first woman in the line up during the picking didn’t chose another woman bc she felt that wasn’t good for her game. How she moved against Ashley was like a total hypocrite!

You have a good point, but it's not the same. Mai could choose between supporting players with whom she had already established trust or supporting a group of players with whom she shared chromosomes. Ashley literally ran against the strategy that put several of the others and herself at less risk.

Lots of people responded negatively to the show as if it’s the worst thing ever . . . when in reality they are clueless about reality TV. The edit definitely had me rooting against Ashley, but I believe Trey even admitted he could have pushed more and it’s his fault. The edit was amazing on the show but they did Ashley a disservice, I think it’s mainly due to how they showed it. I’d say more but I don’t want to spoil anyone on anything.

I def feel like some of the backlash is racially motivated because when other people were shady, it’s glossed over, but she’s getting hate despite still having jumped, just out of order. Mai getting mad and telling everyone Ashley didn’t jump at all when Mai never had to is wild and I get why Ashley was pissed. At the end of the day, her choice helped the whole team, and even if she didn’t agree to the order, she technically DID follow the plan. Trey made his choice and idk why people are saying she had to make multiple jumps just bc they lost a fan favorite. Truly wild.

I think it was the fact that everyone else agreed to take one jump, except her but then she expected everyone else behind her to do what she refused to do herself. She also talked trash about other people and was rude to people. There were other people who behaved the same way and no one liked those people either.

@@klarfaeriethere is a difference between talking badly then backtracking and having another player sabotage himself then trying to act righteous Yes she did follow the plan but only when it benefited her, it is not a good look nor it is an argument in her favor People wanted to make multiple jumps because she didn't agree to the plan, thus being next in line she should've kept jumping, like she made Trey do Yes, she did make Trey jump, because by not taking her turn, him being the one in front, it pressured him to keep jumping to not put the game in a stalemate situation and make everyone else lose And please for the love of god stop trying to use the race card every time a black person receives backlash (even more when it is 100% understandable like here) It makes us look goofy as h
