Life isn't perfect. Sure you don't have to worry about gas but you'll gonna have to think about a new battery pack very soon.

Not soon. Doing the math, constantly seeing that you’ll never need gas, never need a tune up, oil changes, new various failing parts (these have a TOTAL 25 parts) no altetnator, belts, fuel pumps, on and on .. even if you “did” need a battery in 10 years and 80k or something.. the Savings made up for it.

@@djkenny1202 It won't last 10 years. It has no cooling. 8 years max. And they are not cheap. Hear about the guy in Australia being quoted $33.750 for one for his 2012 model? Goodbye fuel savings.

I have several neighbors with ones. My buddy has a silver 2011. Battery only lost 2 bars in 80k. ThT Australian guy needs to shop around. That’s absurd. $4500 in our city, that is for ones not under warranty. And, uhhhhhh...that is a blatant Lie. Why? Nissan Covers the battery for 10 years or 100k miles, whichever comes first. So the dude in Australia needs a pre production car.

Thanks for the video! I too just bought a 2015 Leaf S from Carvana (dec 28, 2017). I absolutely love it! I have a 16 Ford Edge Titanium with all the bells and whistles but I just adore driving my Leaf everywhere I can. My commute to work is 25 miles round trip and coming home and plugging it in is so easy and natural, like plugging my phone in to charge every night. I hope more people realize how seamlessly an EV like the Leaf can fit into their daily lives. Range for 85% of the population will never be a problem. Would I like a 200+ mile EV, SURE. But the price on these used Leafs are so cheap you can’t even compare the cost/benefit ratio to any other EV ( unless you’re a 1 car household).

one tip, pop the hood, and find your way to the strut caps. scrub them down and spray some WD-40 on them every once in awhile because they happen to have a serious rust problem. but other than that, it's a very low maintenance and affordable car.

Almost a year ago, this past November our totally paid off 2005 Toyota Corolla base model with a crank windows and everything got rear-ended and was deemed a total loss. That put me in the unique position of not wanting to buy a car and needing to buy a car. Bummer. After a few days of going through that process I realized that a Nissan Leaf would have fit into our lifestyle. I commute 80 miles per week to work and relatively small segments and we don't take any road trips out of town because we have four small children and a minivan for that. so last November I bought a 2015, white, Nissan Leaf, mid-level trim package with the premium upgrades and I have to say that I've never had a finer car in my entire life. It is fantastic and I just can't seem to get enough of it. We are always finding excuses to drive that car. We will even take the time to remove one, two, or three of the car seats from the minivan and cram them all into the back of the leaf just so we can drive it on short trips around town, and that is saying something. Car seats are a pain in the neck. Now, if we have all four kids at once and or we have any combination of kids friends or whatever then we have to take the minivan but whenever we can we use they leave. I was able to find one that had only one previous owner comma was garage, and only had four thousand miles on it. We got it from the dealership for less than $14, 000 and I feel like I pretty much stole that thing from them. In the time that I've had it, just under a year, I have saved well over $600 in gasoline and my electricity bill has not changed at all because I have roof-mounted solar system that completely covers all the energy usage from the Nissan Leaf. I have very much enjoyed not doing any oil changes and brake work because the regenerative braking, although not as good as a Tesla or other electric vehicles, it's still good enough where if you get used to it and good at it you can use the brakes for only the last five or six miles per hour to come to a complete stop. Good stuff.

We agree. Bought a 2015 leaf last year... Love it. We still kept our old trusty 2002 Toyota corolla we had since new, but just for those occasional long trips. As you said, if a family has 2 or more cars, one of them should be full electric and you'll find it gets 98% of the work. Hybrids are a waste of money and simply too complex.

I have some similarities with you. I bought a used ‘15 Leaf primarily because I was excited at the prospect of saving money on my 50 mile round trip commute, although the environmental benefits are appealing to me too. We are a two car household, our other is an ‘05 CR-V, so it totally makes sense for one of our cars to be an EV. I didn’t install a level 2 charger yet, so it spends almost all afternoon and evening charging for my commute. But it works because we have the 2nd car if we need to go anywhere. And whenever I drive our CR-V now, it’s funny how much I notice engine noise, and the different feel and response of having a transmission versus direct drive, and the wastefulness of traditional brakes :p I’m about a month in and loving it. I would recommend the leaf as a second car for any family, as long as range isn’t an issue. Thanks for your video.

I was highly considering a used leaf, but the battery range seemed to be around 50 miles for older ones. But I didn't really understand the Chevy Volt, it's actually a full electric car with a gas generator. But what really attracted me was the plug in range was close to 50 miles in electric only on the older ones. They don't seem to lose much range after a few years. But the Volt and the Bolt have temperature management systems for the battery. It must make a big difference. You can get a used Volt for about $10,000 used.

The Volt is like a hybrid the Bolt is all electric like the Leaf, but the Bolt isn't as good a car, or so I have heard. I never drove a Bolt new or old. I have seen a couple YT videos of Leafs with new batteries, getting well over 200 miles range. But I don't know how much they cost, or where they came from.

Well, I test drove the Nissan Leaf 2014 last year, in November 2017. The car dealer wanted to sell it to me for € 18,000 (= $20,420). For a 3 year old car, that seemed a bit much, especially considering the fact, that new Nissan Leaf versions are coming out on the yearly basis with much bigger capacity. I wonder how much the rest value of this car will be in 5 years time. Usually, one sells one's old car to start financing the new car. But the real reason I didn't buy it was that I live in a typical apartment in a typical Berlin apartment block. No garage, no way to put my wall box anywhere, and of course I cannot let down a long charging line from the balcony from the fourth floor. I hope so much, that charging stations will be built in their hundreds of thousands in Berlin soon. I do envy everyone who does have his own parking space and can thus install his own charging point.

Uhhh. I don’t drive often. But when I Do, I may go 15 miles on a day. I live in a city. Not in the middle of BFE. But even if I did go further.. 80 miles is plenty. Big ass road trips, then either have that as a family second car, or purchase a beater for a grand or two, or just simply rent something like 1-2 times a year for that use. These cover 90% or more of needs.

This was a fun video. You've owned your Leaf for a very short amount of time, and so you're still in the "honeymoon phase" of new car ownership. You'e essentially validating your choice to buy. But, that having been said, I own a 2013 Leaf, and have for more than 4 years now (I bought it in December of 2013). Every single thing you said in support of your Leaf is something that I tell people all the time today. I have a multi-vehicle household, and we fight over who gets to drive the Leaf. After driving the Leaf for a week or so, getting back into a gasoline powered vehicle is painful. I have a Jeep Compass, which many people will acknowledge as a compromise. It's a small SUV, not the most powerful, not very fast, not very capable. But, it pulled my boat trailer to the lake, pulled my flatbed utility trailer (for the lawn tractor, or the motorcycle, or to haul a big gas grill or load of pine straw, etc.). It is 4 wheel drive, so I can take it off-road for back-woods camping or hiking trips. And, the Jeep is half the price of the full-sized 4 wheel drive pickup truck I'd rather have. That's important, if you're like me, and limited in funds but unlimited in what I want to do with the money. Still, when I go from the Leaf to the Compass, I always feel as if the Compass is broken, somehow. When I press the gas, it makes a lot of noise and moves away from the stop sluggishly. Where's the instant, quiet acceleration? I don't want to go drag racing or anything, but the Leaf just... goes. It doesn't have to ramp up the engine, building RPMs until the engine has enough power to move the car. It just goes. Even my friend's big muscle car hesitates long enough to spool the engine up before blasting away in a load roar. I save money in fuel costs and other ICE related expenses. The electricity to drive the Leaf costs 3¢ per mile (12¢ per kilowatt-hour, and I get 4 miles per kWh), and that's compared with about 10¢ per mile for gasoline, plus costs for oil changes, air-filter, spark plugs, oxygen-sensor replacements, emissions testing, and all that goes with running an ICE. The downside is that I'll have to buy a really expensive battery eventually. Maybe spending $6000 after 60,000 to 80,000 miles, if I want to keep the Leaf long term. That's assuming the price of the batteries doesn't drop, while the range expands. I think both of those things will happen. I'm hoping to be able to spend $3000 or so in a few years to get a battery that will give me 160 miles of range on my 2013 Leaf.

Totally agree. We bought a used (200 mile showroom car 2015 - close to half price) replacing our second car. The 'second car' term turned out to be wrong. We use the Leaf whenever it is possible and it takes by far the most of our miles. True there some rare occassions where range dictates the use of our ICE car for family outings.... I can count 3 (three) times for the last half year. I now hate my ICE car so much - due to the driving experience - I ordered a Niro PHEV.

I'm on my third Leaf, leasing new. I have really enjoyed all three. The only car I would buy used right now is a Leaf with the older dashboard, like you have there. Only my first one had it, and I did like it. The newer dash isn't bad, but the old one is better. If I bought a used car, I would want a new battery. I have seen a couple YT videos claiming well over 200 miles range. double what I got in my first one. I do also have a VW Jetta, but that is getting old now 08. Enjoy your leaf, I'm sure you will. I really don't have anything negative to tell you about the Leaf you don't already know. The range can be a problem, but it isn't 90% of the time. It is a matter of opinion, but they are great little cars. I still want a sedan.

Some stats - 126,747 Nissan leafs sold in the US through October 2018 - so there are plenty of these cars around. Just realize that the $5000 - $6000 leafs will not get the full range of 80miles or 107 miles (for 2016+) and lots of folks overstate the range in CL ads. But a great way to ease into the EV lifestyle. Of course no gos does not = free energy and you'll still have to pay for electrons but figure 104 MPG so twice the savings of a Prius and 4x that of a gas car.

‘’How much does it cost to replace the battery?” Nissan has given a definitive answer to that question, but not many people are aware of this. If you own a 2011 to 2015 Nissan LEAF, replacing the battery will cost you exactly $5,499, plus installation, which the company estimates will take about 3 hours. Owners of 2011 and 2012 cars must also add $225 for a special adapter kit to retrofit the new battery to their cars.

I was considering a Leaf. I watched at least ten vids, now not so much. The impression I got is you are lucky to get 40,000 miles out of three thousand dollar battery pack. I did the math and my 2006 Prius is still cheaper. I love my 2006 battery pack yes original batteries and I am still getting 45-47 mpg. Nissan decided that Batteries don’t need temperature management. When I bought a rav way back in 1997 thinking it would be my last gas powered car. I am retired and really can’t reasonably afford a Tesla. I want a totally electric car so badly I can almost taste it. When I find a leaf cheap enough to cover new batteries I will probably get one. The price of a used Leaf will vary from state to state. My research in the past 2 months - Feb - March 2018 revealed a cheapest price of about $10k and up for a 2013 + but there was one a 2012 with 8 bars for about $6k. They seem to be even more now in Colorado but there was one in Fort Collins for about $6 in April that looked OK. I actual ended up getting one from FL shipped fort about $5k with a newish battery so I got a real bargain but do your homework as they will ALL have battery degradation and when you add in the fact you only want to charge to 80% on a battery with only 90% you're looking at 65miles of range max and 75 fully charged - fine for most folks who just need to tootle around town.

Only the back half of the buses are accessible, and during rush hour; sure, the trains and buses are running more frequent; but it also means more of a backup along the train lines and roadways as each train and bus are packed like sardines. It’s this reason too that NY’ers would rather drive in to work, etc.

One of these things may make a decent second hand purchase. As the EV technology progresses so the value of the early models will drop like a stone. Get one cheap and I can see the appeal, especially if you never drive long distances. I think it is worth waiting a little longer to let the depreciation kick in though. If someone can come up with an EV that takes 5 minutes to charge and has a decent range these cars will go for pennies.👍
@RMarkNolan

My EV takes me 10 seconds to charge: 5 seconds to plug in when I get home at night, 5 seconds to unplug in the morning when I head out. I don't have to take time out of my schedule to travel to a gas station, potentially wait for a pump, wait while pumping, make a payment transaction, then commute back home.
@smoothmicra
@smoothmicra 5 жыл бұрын
@@RMarkNolan Well nice try, but presumably your EV doesn't have a turbo charge button if you have to drive somewhere outside your normal routine? I don't mind admitting that for most of us that is a rare occurrence, but it has happened to me enough times to make me think that if I get a call to be somewhere quickly at short notice I don't want to rely on an EV I might have plugged in 5 minutes ago. Maybe I could opt for a taxi or public transport in such a circumstance but then I'd be wondering why I spent so much on a car that cannot get me to where I need to be. A car must surely be the epitome of modern convenience, you'd agree? That is why I suspect most people who have an EV in the UK drive it as the second car, cheap to make the school run or commute, but not realistic as the 'anytime anywhere' car. Fine, but don't tell me that the current EVs can compete with a petrol/diesel in terms of convenience. I accept that for some they work, right now, as the only car in the household. For most of us though they don't. That might change in the future but I'm happy to wait and see...

I bought a GMC Terrain from Carvana last fall and loved the process. I am a big Carvana fan. Also, I really, really wanted a Leaf but was scared to death I'd regret it after owning it a few months and was worried about resale value. I knew with the Terrain it'd retain a lot of value but if I regretted buying the Leaf it'd cost me a couple thousand dollars or more because trade in value would be very low. I regret not buying it and wish I'd bought one but oh well. My next vehicle will be an electric. The Leaf is an ugly car but that's what I would've bought. I've done a lot of research and it's my favorite EV.

I have zero problem with it whatsoever. I certainly would not want to trade that in for a Leaf. Lets face it, once a Leaf reaches 50K miles, it's at the end of its life and nobody wants it any more. I can't say the same for my old Corolla which can possibly get up to 400K miles with proper maintenance.

Nice video, but a point of clarification. You stated that the electricity is way less expensive than gasoline. That's not exactly true. As of today, 3/21/18, according to gasprices.AAA.com, the national average cost for a gallon of gas is $2.566 per gallon. The current national average cost of a kWh of electricity is 12 cents (I think - I don't have a good reference for that quote). Before we can compare cost, we need to look at equal amounts of energy. It takes 33.7 kWh of electricity to equal the amount of energy in 1 gallon of gas according to the EPA. Multiplying 12 cents/kWh by 33.7 kWh, we get $4.044. Therefore, an equal amount of the electricity is actually more expensive than a gallon of gas. BUT, let's don't stop there because it's not just about the cost of the energy that we need to consider. We have to factor in how efficiently the EV uses it's energy compared to an ICEV. The model year 2018 vehicles on average get about 25 mpg. According to fueleconomy.gov, your 2015 Leaf gets 114 mpg-e. So let's see which is less expensive to drive 100 miles. The ICEV would need 4 gallons (100 miles/25 mpg) which would cost $10.264. Your Leaf would need 0.877 gallons-e (100 miles/114 mpge) which is equivalent to 29.56 kWh (.877 gallons-e x 33.7 kWh/gallon) which would cost $3.547. From this we can conclude that the EV is indeed less expensive to refuel for your trips than a typical ICEV getting average mileage. In fact, we can say that your Leaf is 65% less expensive to refuel than that average mileage ICEV. That's a great savings!!!! By the way, I drive a 2015 Leaf as well and by driving in B when slowing down and using ECO mode all the time, my long term average mileage is 4.7 miles/kWh which equates to 158 mpg-e!

CHEAPER TO KEEPER....A Leaf will get ya down the road until you can afford a used Tesla model S or 3 or X....S's and likely X's will be quite affordable soon because of the new more energy-dense 2170 battery cells and other great advancements in the model 3 which is attracting many buyers. Like the innovative water-source-heat-pump system (anti freeze coolent loop) used to collect and/or reject heat (and redistribute it as needed) from or to all heat producing or heat/cool dependent electronics, ie cabin heating/cooling, and battery pack temp protection in extreme cold and hot ambients rather than using the range-robbing resistive battery pack heater on S and X. S is still awesome, but it's all moving very fast now and very soon S's will be 10 to 20 grand. As for cost of X's? they will cost more, as X's always do.

Used EVs are the way to go for a lot of reasons. First, because they depreciate very quickly* which is bad for the person who bought the car new and then sold it later on, but GOOD for second hand buyers! I bought a used 2016 Kia Soul EV+ with only 17000-ish miles, one owner and in perfect shape for less than $13000. These sold new for over $32000. It is the best car I have ever owned or even driven, by far. I work only 10 miles from where I live, so the "limitation" of only having a 93 mile range has never been a factor for me. And with electricity costing only 10.2 cents per kilowatt in my area it only costs me a few dollars to "fill up" from home, which I only need to do every second or third day (less if I charge to 100%: I usually charge to 80%). Anyway, if you're thinking about getting an EV, consider a used one, TAKE YOUR TIME and do your research. Really think about what kind of range and features you ACTUALLY need. I researched for about 6 months before I settled on the Soul and I do not regret it. And, no lie: Every single person who I have given a ride in it has said that their next car will be electric, especially after I dispel their concerns (like range anxiety and "the batteries will need to be replaced after 4 or 5 years!", etc). * except Teslas, which hold their value very well

If you only drive 18 miles per day, you will be fine using a level 1 charger. The Nissan owners manual recommends only using level 1 when you absolutely have to.
