In this video I take my Nikon Z7 II with an f4 24-70 lens out on a landscape photography shoot. My wife had kicked me out of the house, so I had no plans of where to go or what to shoot. Unfortunately, the weather was not on my side with heavy rain and ferocious wind.

JMO, but I consider this to be one of your most successful photography adventures in some time. You need to thank your wife for "kicking you out". I was surprised at the quality you were able to capture in the conditions you were in. Congratulations, Thomas. Well done.

A great set of images, especially the lone tree on the hillside. I am constantly impressed by your ability to produce such high quality photographs in the most unpromising and arduous conditions. It is an inspiration to get out and shoot when conditions are less than "perfect", no excuses.

Right from the first shot, I knew this was going to be "classic Heaton", and I was not disappointed! I do love your sense of humour, and you made a great success of the trip despite the conditions. I loved the early shot of the waterfall behind the lone tree - it's amazing how well you managed in the wind.

The lesson from this video really hits home for me. So often, I find myself hardly ever getting to choose when I can go out for a shoot. There are so many days with perfect conditions, but I'm busy at work. And when I CAN shoot, the conditions are terrible. So I guess what I'm taking away from this video is that a shoot is meant to convey the feeling of being at the location, including whatever conditions might be present. There should always be a way to use the current conditions to your advantage. Strong winds and dark, stormy conditions can make quite powerful images, as you've demonstrated. By the way, the image with the grass next to the water was absolutely genius! The shape of the grass and the ripples on the water make it very obvious that it was windy.

I agree, that one with the little tree on the edge and the light in the valley behind is fantastic! Well done for really braving the elements in this one and doing so without incident. Driving the van in those conditions can’t be easy, apart from anything else.

Next time your wife decides to kick you out of the house for the night, maybe ask her to check the weather forecast first ;-), but I do love the images especially the ones with the long lens shot in the end. The small patches of sunlight put emphasis on the drama of the conditions! I guess we will have to wait for a calmer video to get your thoughts on the f4 lens 🙂

In wind like that, I suggest removing the lens hood, especially on a long lens. The wind just makes the whole thing unstable, more so if it's in your face, and the lens is going to get wet anyway. You got some pretty nice images, given the conditions.

Wonderful work as always. The image at 14:47, of the windswept grass against the water, is *striking*. It feels almost... 'painterly' is the obvious word, but it more reminds me of the *pictorialists*, of hand-brushing emulsion onto a canvas with fat, ragged brushstrokes. A bit abstracted, a bit separated from the world, yet undeniably *real*. It might not be the traditional one to gravitate towards, but something about it just grabbed me.
