Jesus’ cry to God troubled me so much and my heart never excepted the explanations given for it (e.g. “That was his human part speaking.” “God was so pained at Jesus on the cross that he had to go away.” Etc.). I’ve only been saved for 2&1/2 years, but last Easter I prayed and prayed for God to resolve this for me. A part of the explanation that Sam doesn’t mention here was that we are looking at this from a Christian perspective. But, Jesus was a Jew; a teacher. At that time, the Jews had to know their Torah by heart. There was no, “Go to book X, look up Chapter Y, verse Z.” So, if the Rabbi wanted to direct his students to a specific chapter of the Torah, he would simply state the first verse. I was deeply touched to know that Jesus gave this evidence of his Lordship as his final lesson to his students who were with him in his final moments. Psalm 22. Like you, I was moved to tears. And, I was amazed that God would answer my prayer, because the question that I asked was answered in a way that resolves it completely in my heart.

Man my heart broke when you explained this brother, thank you so much! The orthodox study bible says something similar to this. "He speaks these words in the name of humanity, completely identifying with our condition, for in His divinity He is never forsaken by the Father." And then it goes on to say "Christ death was voluntary to the very end, for even on the cross, His lofe could not be taken from Him against His Wil. Christ accepts death on the cross, neither to receive the Fathers punishment on our behalf, nor to satisfy the Fathers need for blood-justice (as if God would demand such things) but so thst by entering death as the divine Son of God, He can destroy the last enemy, which is death itself."

Psalm 22 is an perfect example of Jesus fulfilling Scripture. It paints the picture of what they were doing to him prior to his death😢

I would add that psalm 22 I different in the hebrew scriptures. Pierced doesn't exist in their oldest translation. An indecipherable word is used that they choose to be lion. The oldest hebrew version is from 200 ad. The oldest version period is Greek from 300 bc and it uses bored or pierced.

First time listener here, came here after googling, why did Jesus say why have you forsaken me. Thank you for the exegesis. Regarding the virus, I learned that a pastor that I have been listening to for years, had MANY more hearers of his sermons during the virus via the internet. More than he has had for decades. The mandate and ‘uproar’ of not gathering was ignorant of Gods plan of gathering many more via the net. I have wondered if the uproar from many ‘believers’ actually did more harm than good to the lost.

There is so much to say about this beautiful verse which unites and asserts the beautiful Divine and human nature of God. I think the key to fully understanding the verse is by recognizing Jesus' nature as both man and God. As a man, showing weakness, anxiety and bearing our terrors in facing death and as God, using the words of David in a plea that despite his ultimate sacrifice, God deprived Him of the salvation of the reprobate.
