That Padres/Astros game was wild on all levels. Even the umpire messing up Hader's stepping off calling it a pitch clock violation and then having to check with NY.

That was even worse than the other two botched calls. How does an entire umpiring crew not know the rules on disengagements? They are an embarrassment to the sport.

Both of Altuve's ejections this year were by this same umpiring crew for the exact same thing, where they clearly missed the call that could have been easily corrected if it were reviewable. You guys are right...the big picture issue is why isn't everything that is easily identifiable and correctable through replay reviewable?

There's even more craziness with the umps from last night's HOU @ SDP game. There was questionable stuff throughout the night (for both teams, not one sided), but it seemed to get extra egregious in the bottom of the 8th when Hader took the mound and was then called for a clock violation before throwing his first pitch. They proceed to waste 5-7 minutes figuring out the rules of the game they're officiating before finally coming to the right answer that he stepped off, which should have reset the clock. Then they spend another minute explaining the rules of the game to the Padre's skipper (some gamesmanship on his end, which is a part of the game--whatever). I'm guessing this led to Hader having cooled off enough to uncork his first pitch into the backstop to allow the tying run. Fair chance that the game doesn't make it to extras without the clock violation debacle. 2nd Interesting Fact: This is the same umpiring crew that officiated the HOU-CIN series a couple weeks back. Part of the controversy from that series was that Bregman was HBP and the ump called it a foul ball. Upon review, the call on the field stood--most people guessing it's because you can't actually review a foul call (not that it stopped HOU from losing their challenge...). So this is the second time this crew has been involved in a HBP call / play that #1 they were wrong about, #2 was incorrectly upheld upon review. Other weird calls from the night: Machado received a few extra pitches rather than be walked because the guy behind the plate (the real problem of the night, from what I could tell) had a... weird... strike zone. (This happens, and could have gone in either team's favor. In an post-game interview Machado thanked him for calling those pitches strikes, because it got him to the pitch that he clobbered for a homerun.) The other weird call was a pretty weak balk call against SDP that ultimately led to Alvarez tackling the pitcher at home plate a few pitches later. I appreciate that it gave HOU a chance to score on a wild pitch, but I don't think the balk call really lived up to the intended spirit of the rule in the first place (preventing pitchers from fake throwing home to catch a baserunner in a steal). Hoping I don't even see this umpire crew for the rest of the season. Especially in the post season. Also: make every single call on the field reviewable, and make it so that the reviewers have ultimate authority to get any call they're looking at correct--even if it wasn't the stated reason for the review in the first place. Sorry for the spam, been fired up since I watched this game last night.

Surprised you didnt also mention the 5 minute delay where the umpires forgot their own rules and had to call New York for a "rule check" before Hader even threw his first pitch. That 100% iced Hader IMO and the first pitch after all that BS was a wild pitch. The next 11 pitches Hader threw were strikes.

Trevor is wrong, a little bit. He’s right by saying that the chase for 50-50 and the slim division lead are 2 different trains of thought. Yes, Ohtani is cementing his Goat status with 50-50. However. The Dodgers are going to be in serious trouble if we don’t win some crucial games coming up. The Padres are coming to town this weekend and If LA loses that series, LA might once again fall extremely short in the playoffs. LA needs that bye BECAUSE the pitching staff is so unhealthy this late in the season. 8/10 excited for 50-50 9/10 worried about the division and playoff seeding
